As we kick off 2010 we've decided to try experimenting with releasing episodes in both per-segment as well as contiguous versions. Last time we posted the segments just on the website and the full show on the RSS feed. This time we're doing the opposite: posting the segments to the RSS feed and the full show contained in one file just on the website. The remaining parts will be posted to the RSS feed once a week over the next month, but since you've come to the website, we'll give you the option of downloading the entire show right now. Daryl reviews the anime adaptation of Violence Jack by Go Nagai, Gerald reviews Bobby's Girl, and Clarissa reviews the book The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga by Helen McCarthy.
No Pickle Player this time. The Wordpress migration is imminent and it'll have its own built-in Flash player. For now, the ever-changing test layout is over here. Show notes later. It's 2:00 AM.
Introduction (0:00 - 31:20)
None of us really felt like leveling out the audio or editing out the various "y'knows," "um's" and the like because there are far too many good videogames we have bought but not yet played. We elaborate on the nature of seinen manga/anime and give some examples of titles we like. We also hear of yet another person tricked into watching Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight as a result of this review we did. Finally, someone asks about the Daicon animations (now on Youtube: watch high-quality copies here and here!)as well as female anime directors.
Let's News! (31:20 - 1:08:05)
Daisuke Gori is dead. Nobody buys sports anime in America. The Allure of Japan's Pop Culture is straight-up good ol' fashioned government propaganda that continues to push the "Cool Japan" BS narrative only espoused in the US by people with books to sell. The people who spend the most time pushing the "weird Japan" narrative (that rename their articles after the fact) should probably not decry the mentality that directly results from their very own actions first and foremost. We check out actual Japanese manga circulation numbers. And Tim Eldred informs us that Space Battleship Yamato: Rebirth is not the worst thing ever made, thus surpassing ALL expectations.
Review: Violence Jack (1:08:05 - 2:02:04)
It took several years to get to the second in the trinity of the Holy Manga Video Trinity of Suck (the first being Angel Cop and the third being Mad Bull 34 by Kazuo Koike). But that's because Violence Jack is the least clip-worthy of the three, cut or uncut. After roughly two years of putting it off, Daryl finally reviews this behemoth, the shonen work that established modern-era post-apocalyptic fiction as we know it.
Promo: Anime82 (2:02:04 - 2:02:58)
The preceding review was made possible by Regan Strongblood, who provided us with copies of uncut Violence Jack long before such a thing was available. Of course, since we put it off for two years, you can now simply download torrents of uncut Violence Jack. He asks that you all grow some mecha balls, and by that he means ones like Devastator's in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen aka "the 4th most important movie of 2009."
Review: Bobby's Girl (2:02:58 - 2:31:50)
On the subject of things that a few years ago were impossible to find but can now be easily acquired via BitTorrent, Gerald reviews this 1980s classic. Fairly light on dialogue and somewhat experimental in its overall approach, it encapsulates a great number of different animation styles within its fairly short running time.
Review: The Art of Osamu Tezuka (2:31:50 - 3:07:00)
Clarissa wraps things up by reviewing the hardcover edition (with DVD) of this new coffee table style book by Helen McCarthy. Filled with a variety of never-before-seen pictures from the life and times of Japan's "God of Manga," this book is totally worth buying via this Amazon.com link so that we can make like forty cents commission. Remember: it'll stop a bullet! Disclaimer: the AWO makes no guarantees as to the the size or caliber of the bullet that this book can stop.
Closing (3:07:00 - 3:14:59)
Following the shocking revelation that this podcast does NOT cure insomnia (also of note: Peacock King is FREAKING INSANE), we would like to note that both Daryl and Clarissa will indeed be doing panels at Anime Boston 2010. In the next episode, we're turning the difficulty on this all the way up to Bitter as Gerald reviews the movie that put Gainax on the map aka Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Clarissa reviews 5cm Per Second by Makoto Shinkai, and Daryl reviews Swallowing the Earth by Osamu Tezuka. In the meantime, we will probably post up a bonus episode with our 2000-2009 anime in review retrospective.
Show 81 concludes with Daryl's review of Kekko Kamen and Clarissa's review of Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman. Along with the post-Anime Expo news, can you really call it the second half of a podcast when it's over 2 hours long? WE CAN!
Full show notes with pictures and stuff later. Maybe. It's nearly 2:00 AM, already.
Let's News! (0:00 - 53:41)
Notes forthcoming, much like last week's episode which is still listed as "notes forthcoming." If only one of us had some sort of online repository full of links and subject material for this segment that could be easily pasted into these spaces...
Review: Kekko Kamen (53:41 - 1:26:41)
Go Nagai? Restraining himself? H...holding back?! GODDAMMIT WHERE THE HELL IS JACK?! Reports suggest his knife is made of Super Alloy Z, but this is contradicted by the fact that it breaks all the time and he just summons forth a new one via the power of VIOLENCE~!. In any case, Kekko Kamen is a textbook example of how far we've come [fallen...?] over the last 30 years. Can there even truly BE screenshots of this, either of Kekko Kamen herself or the villains? Maybe we'll just post the English translated lyrics to the theme song.
Review: Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman (1:26:41 - 1:57:08)
Everything you need to know about this cartoon is succinctly encapsulated within its title. But maybe we should post some pictures of it anyway.
Buddha wants to make one lucky woman a superhero!
Sadly, this mostly involves wearing a really unfortunate outfit. And lots of butts. Buichi Terasawa and Sir Mix-a-Lot would both be proud.
Closing (1:58:06 - 2:12:13)
Next time, all that remains on the "one person recommends titles for everyone else" train is Clarissa. She has opted to do unto others as was done unto her. It's a gamble. A very risky gamble. But also a manly gamble. Manly enough to the point that it's probably really gay. But if you can get past the fact that the gamble is so gay they have their pants zipped down a lot, you'd see it was awesome. What we're trying to say here is that Clarissa's reviewing One Outs next time. As for Daryl and Gerald? THAT IS CLASSIFIED (for the next few hours). Be on the lookout: there's a deadly stinger at the end of all this.
OH NO, THE BANDANA'S COME OFF! Here now is the second half of Show 76 containing the reviews of Shootfighter Tekken, Baoh, and Part 4 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Warning: this might melt your brain.
Review: Shootfighter Tekken (0:00 - 33:39)
Gerald reviews a fine masterpiece by Tetsuya Saruwatari, esteemed student of the mighty Kazuo Koike and creator of the grand masterpiece known as Violence Hero: Riki-Oh. A relatively short 3 part-OAV anime adapted from the very long-running manga series Koukou Tekken-den Tough that was partially released by Viz under the name Tough, Shootfighter Tekken was one of the last, if not THE last, new releases from Central Park Media. Nobody really seemed to care when it came out. Were they mistaken? Listen on and find out!
Promo: Ani-Gamers (33:39 - 34:33)
Evan assures us that this promo doesn't have people who ultimately didn't end up being on the podcast at all in it, which while beneficial isn't always necessary. Heck, the reason our latest promo is so good is precisely because it has nothing to do with much of anything we said at all! Anyway, Ani-Gamers just released the second half of episode 11, so check them out. Just remember: UNCLE YO SEES ALL, except for the hentai clips that Gerald shows at anime conventions. He did the right thing and bolted out of there when those came on.
Review: Baoh (34:33 - 1:11:05)
Daryl gave strong consideration to just ripping the dub audio from Baoh--PERHAPS THE GREATEST SINGLE-LENGTH OAV EVER MADE--in its entirety and posting that as the review. Perhaps a future bonus installment of AWO could simply be entitled "Baoh: The Audio Drama" because aside from a few scenes, you actually don't need to see what's going on at any point whatsoever due to all the narration. Daryl always dreamed of just getting cosplayers to read the lines from Baoh, but this dream never came to fruition because if you think it's hard to get a cosplayer you personally know to speak into a microphone, try getting them to say "there is! Such a power is contained WITHIN BAOH!" It's not happening, folks.
Promo: Anime82 (1:11:05 - 1:11:49)
We suspect that Regan might have been impersonating the Macross II dub when recording this promo, but no matter: after a few months of hiatus he's back with a new episode! Thanks to Regan and the rest of the guys at Box Fansubs for their work on Locke the Superman and Queen Millennia, the latter of which you can definitely expect Daryl to review in a future episode! Though it begs the question whether or not Queen Millennia should get priority over Violence Jack...
Review (manga): Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4 (1:11:49 - 1:49:34)
Daryl and Clarissa may never read them and Gerald may have given up reading them in disgust, but Bass_kat from the Fast Karate for the Gentleman forums calls in to relate to us all the tale of how she saw Wicked City back when she was 8 years old. A bizarre tale as that can only be placed prior to Clarissa's review of a bizarre manga. This one is sort of the "Death Note + Hot Fuzz" portion of Jojo's, and marks a definitive turning point as far as content and art style is concerned.
Meet the Jojo's Part 4 gang! Clockwise from top left there's Okuyasu, Josuke, Jotaro, Koichi (whose face is being eaten by Araki's name) and Rohan. Josuke, of course, is easy to spot thanks to his kickin' pompadour. Sadly, people tend to make fun of it because rather than being a real tough guy style, now it's pretty much just worn by Yoyogi Park rockabilly dudes.
Of course, Josuke has his Stand Crazy Diamond, which valiantly continues the heart motif Araki loves so much.
And I couldn't not devote time to that amazing Araki/Tezuka/Go Nagai hybrid Rohan. I mentioned he's crazy IN THE NAME OF GREAT MANGA right?
If you were wondering, this is what Rohan's Stand does to people. It's much better in visuals than in the description.
True, there's no Dio anymore. But just take a fucking look at Kira and Killer Queen. Top tier Stand design? I think so. (Hey Medicos, when you're done with this year's Stardust Crusaders blitz, could we maybe get a poseable Killer Queen and Kira? With bonus amputated hand girlfriend of course.)
But don't get too down. Psychotic murderers and high body counts aside, remember: it's Jojo's so they're all dorks. Inviiiiisible baaaaby.
Closing (1:49:34 - 1:53:58)
Next time on AWO, it's SHOW TIME because our special guest once again is Mike Toole! Last heard from about two years ago, Mike's since capitalized on his knowledge that audio is for suckers to become a sporadic streaming video sensation, but he's still keeping it real! Daryl will be reviewing his favorite series of 2007, Baccano! (warning: don't read the Wikipedia page or the ANN encyclopedia entry or especially the ANN review of volume 1), Gerald is reviewing the former crown jewel of the anime laserdisc empire known as Five Star Stories, and Clarissa does what we should have done the first time we had Mike on: review freakin' Big O! This entire episode was recorded about a month ago, and we still haven't started editing it because...well...sowwwhy! We had done tol' Craig and 'dem that we was gon' kick it wit' 'dem. Gotta go; see you when we see you!
With Anime Weekend Atlanta mere DAYS away, we managed to get this one edited in between the time spent scrambling to get our panels all put together. Clarissa's reviewing the BL manga Dog Style, Gerald reviews the terrible wannabe cyberpunk OAV Burn Up! which unfortunately got multiple sequels, and Daryl reviews the awesome non-wannabe cyberpunk OAV Cyber City Oedo 808 which unfortunately got no sequels at all.
Full show notes with pictures and stuff to be posted later. Maybe.
Introduction (0:00 - 29:58) After lamenting our inability to play children's videogames, we answer a voicemail about "real giant robot shows," which slightly confuses us. Hopefully we answered the question. We also read an email about our experience with seeing anime in theaters, which isn't all that much. For those curious, here's the IMDB page for the 2006 Danish animated movie "Princess." Since this was recorded, we did actually get a copy of this movie, and you have our assurances that although there are some moments in it with live-action, it's not another Rock-a-Doodle. We wrap things up with a quick overview of all the panels we'll be doing at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2008. Spread the word!
Review: Dog Style (54:44 - 1:13:10) Mara from the Providence Anime Conference sent us a voicemail in response to the podcast from "the 25th, which was yesterday." What that actually means is that it's a voicemail in response to the podcast from July 25th, which was not yesterday. In fact, it was the podcast from July 25th, 2007. We just forgot to play the message. For a year. PAC's actually happening in about two weeks, so we figured this was the absolute latest time to actually put this thing into the show. Mara sincerely hopes the con doesn't end up being nothing but sleaze and porn, so it's only natural that we relay that sentiment right before Clarissa reviews one of Modoru Motoni's BL manga offerings. Like Poison Cherry Drive, Dog Style was released by Media Blasters through their Kitty Media label. So far Volume 1 and Volume 2 are out, with the third volume to be released in the future. This review's a little short, so if you want more Clarissa, check out the latest episode of Destroy All Podcasts DX where they reviewed Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Granted, it should have been Daryl on this one as he's the one who's seen the movie the most times, but Jeremy really wanted a girl on the show. Does that make Jeremy the John McCain of anime podcasting? We're pretty sure the answer is yes.
Review: Burn Up! (1:13:10 - 1:36:05) Gerald plunges into the depths of the "the world should've forgotten about this" pit to bring us this 1991 OAV that was somehow so popular in the US, we got three followups made to it. And two of those were TV series. In our entire lives, we have never seen anyone who genuinely LIKES Burn Up!, so it is a complete mystery as to how this came about. Pay special attention to the dub of this one, as it was one of the first dubs made by AD Vision, as they were known at the time. Don't worry: we've got sound bites! Due to some level balance mishaps, Clarissa's audio on this portion is much lower than everyone else's, but you should still be able to hear her if you BELIEVE IN THE FUTURE:
Promo: OSMcast (1:36:05 - 1:36:52) Five months this podcast has been out and they have not one, not two, but THREE serviceable promos? And we've been around what, almost three years now and we still have the one crummy one? CURSE YOU, REED RICHARDS! [shakes fist] At least, we assume he's to blame as this is run by a fantastic four! True to the name, this show's about everything "awesome," and then some. I say "and then some" since they did episodes about Smash Brothers Brawl, Rock Band, and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Also, Indy IV. Still, give them a shot since their show actually comes out each week. Whatta concept!
Review: Cyber City Oedo 808 (1:36:52 - 2:18:36) Daryl tried to shorten this review. Really, he did. But he didn't have it in him to make this one single segment shorter than your typical entire episode of Fast Karate for the Gentleman, especially not where Yoshiaki Kawajiri is concerned. But unlike all the previous Kawajiri-related AWO segments, this one's not actually a scene-by-scene description of what happens in it. In fact, it might just be Kawajiri's best work, which is why it's odd that hardly anybody ever remembers it. Not even us, until we did the review! That is a damn crime for which we should be locked up in orbital space prison for three centuries, but fortunately we're all out on parole doing podcasts in exchange for reduced time. For every minute of edited podcast we release, we get time off our sentences. Now you know why the episodes run so long!
This is Shunsuke Sengoku. That's a jitte he's holding. I don't remember if you could pick up jitte in the Neo-Geo side-scrolling beat-em-up that was also named Sengoku, where ninja and cowboys fought side by side. I played a lot of Shogun: Total War back in the day, and so I know the word "sengoku" refers to "the country at war" when all those daimyo were fighting over control of Japan. We need a sequel to that game.
This is his gun. You mean to tell me they can make TWO TV shows out of Burn Up!, but nothing for Cyber City Oedo? This is already all the premise one needs!
This is Gabimaru Rikiya, but nobody ever calls him that in the show itself. He's just "Goggles" or "Go-gl" or what have you. In addition to being a cyber hacker, he's also a former boxer. Or at least I assume that since he decides the best way to defeat evil robots is to PUNCH THEM.
Put your peen away: THAT'S A DUDE. Merrill Yanagawa aka Benten does not ride a space motorbike and have a chain wrapped around his chest, but he wields MONOFILAMENT WIRE~! which automatically makes him the best character. On second thought, take your peen back out. For a cop, you sure don't know much; those are Cyberjunkies! Oh wait, this isn't the Streamline dub of 8 Man After. This is a fine representation of what the cyber criminals look like. Notice the Hokuto no Ken thug motif present throughout this cartoon. Further proof of its quality, I tell you. Wait a second, is that...Donna Troy?!
Nothing better exhibits Yoshiaki Kawajiri's unmatched talent for character and fashion design than this Brigitte Nielsen lookalike, but giving the Shoryuken to the robot won out for being the embedded image in the MP3.
There is no "witty" caption I can offer to this picture of a cyborg sabertoothed tiger chargin' his laser. Either you instantly want to see this anime or you do not.
Amazon has a few copies of the DVD left in their zShops. If you're wondering why they never wore those uniforms they're sporting on the cover ever again after the first episode, it's because Kawajiri decided they looked stupid after all.
Closing (2:18:36 - 2:22:15) The next episode of AWO hopefully shouldn't take TOO long since after AWA we're just about done as far as anime con season goes. Gerald's going to be reviewing the Witchblade anime, and despite having bought every volume of this series as FUNimation released it, he was able to mentally block out the Gonzo logo that's on all the packaging and is displayed at the start of each disc. Perhaps he was looking at something else! Daryl's reviewing the 3-part OAV Strait Jacket, soon to be released by Manga Video, and Clarissa's reviewing the highly infectious Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture, which for incomprehensible reasons has been licensed by absolutely nobody. It's all about bacteria, so see you next "decultured"!
The remainder of Show 71 is quite lengthy, but let it tide you over for a while since we've got conventions coming up. Gerald reviews Nobody's Boy Remi, Clarissa reviews the anime version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Daryl finally covers Part 3 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Full show notes may take a little while, but in the meantime here's the segment timecodes because this one runs pretty long.
Introduction (0:00 - 28:32) In lieu of reading emails, Daryl gives his convention report on the 2008 Florida Supercon. Photos to possibly be added here soon, but in the meantime, here's over a thousand for you to look at. Witness THE TRUTH of the convention that Daryl wasn't mentally prepared to confront. One word: W-rock. [That's short for "wizard rock." You know, garage bands that sing songs about Harry Potter. There's LOTS OF THEM NOW.]
Promo: R5 Central (28:32 - 29:15) The Otakon-bound Mike Dent managed to post an interview with Mark Musashi, tokusatsu fan soon to be seen on Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. Mike fails to spend the entirety of this 2-part interview talking about the fact that Mark did motion capture for God Hand and Thunderbolt Volgin in Metal Gear Solid 3. He better watch out for errant bolts of lightning from God as punishment. Kuwabara, kuwabara...
Promo: Robotronic Dynamite (56:50 - 57:53) We have yet to play Ninja Gaiden 2 beyond the demo, but word on the street is that we should wait for it to drop to about half price anyway. Anyway, this podcast features Otaku USA's own Joseph Luster and his merry band of merry men as they talk about movies, videogames, and stuff. In the latest episode, they all seem to have gone to the San Diego Comic-Con, so if you can't get enough of people talking about Watchmen this is the show for you. For the record, Watchmen is BO-RING no matter what the rest of the world claims, and don't you fucking tell me I didn't get it or link me to that goddamned annotations site. Nobody in Watchmen matters besides Rorschach anyway. Oh, you can try to claim otherwise, but you'll have to deny the 90s happened on account that everyone wanted their heroes to be like Rorschach (and DKR Batman). Good luck with THAT.
Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Superman Legend (57:53 - 1:33:00) Clarissa proves once and for all that the Japanese can screw up American properties with equal if not greater efficiency than we can screw up theirs! Whether or not this iteration of the Ninja Turtles is superior to the version that EE "Doc" Finnegan is working on will be judged by history. OR HISTORIANS. Fair warning: Hironobu Kageyama probably will not be performing the theme song to this one as part of his Otakon set. Maybe "review" up there should go in quotation marks, because we really don't want you to watch this. Under any circumstances. So don't watch it.
Review: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Part 3 (1:33:00 - 2:17:48) TJ calls in to let us know that he greatly enjoyed Kaiji upon hearing our review of it, and so can you! Daryl put this one off for a year, but he finally broke down and decided to reread through, rewatch, and replay Part 3 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, more commonly known as "the greatest part of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure." This is the big one that all the swingin' cats know about; a tale of Stands, really big belts, and members of the United States Senate being treated with the respect they deserve. The obscene running length would suggest this review should have just been released as its own podcast, but accessibility was never our trump card. Daryl stopped his own heart about 8 times during the editing of this, and his heart is still stopping every so often even though it's done now. Maybe it's just heartburn. He's got a problem, but if you listen to this review in full, yo you'll solve it.
Closing (2:17:48 - 2:23:18) Show 72 may be a while, so consider yourselves FORTUNATE that Show 71 is as long as it is, because you'll have plenty of time to listen to it all. Preferably not while you're grinding levels in World of Warcraft! Next time, Daryl's back in the Madhouse as he reviews Cyber City Oedo, Clarissa reviews the BL title Dog Style (shockingly, Yasuomi Umetsu is not involved), and Gerald's administering the lead enemas with Burn Up! In the interim we might post a few bonuses since this week and next week we're caught up in anime conventions and preparations for same. See you at Otakon!
Show 63 concludes with Clarissa's review of the much-dreaded Crystal Triangle and our run-in with 4chan, the INTERNET HATE MACHINE, at AWA 2007. Two year anniversary? Probably.
Our special guest is Neil Nadelman and the Totally Lame Anime floodgates have been unleashed! Daryl reviews Dog Soldier, and Gerald reviews Machine Robo: Revenge of Chronos! Stay tuned for Clarissa's Crystal Triangle review which will be uploaded in a few days.
Daryl's off to the New York Anime Festival, so show notes will be available at some other time.
Introduction (0:00 - 31:50) This probably marks the first time we forgot to include the show introduction at the beginning of an actual podcast episode, but that can be attributed to the fact that this episode was uploaded about 20 minutes before Daryl had to get on an airplane. As a reminder, if you have a Podcast Pickle account, please add us to your favorites list so that we can be ranked higher than that podcast about maids. We're asked in the emails how we can justify our love for anime to people who fought the Japanese in World War 2, and we can only answer in R5 Central style. We spend most of the time talking to Neil about how he got into anime translation and the effect that Totally Lame Anime has had on his life. Especially Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight. Then to pad out time, we throw in various Shuki Levy-composed 1980s theme songs to contrast how totally lame the Go-Bots theme was. Yes Jeff, we like Galaxy Rangers too, but Shuki Levy didn't do that one. Eventually, we start talking about scene descriptions in the scripts to Legend of the Overfiend and Fist of the North Star.
Promo: Anime Roundtable (31:50 - 32:38) Wait, you can make a slogan out of how you edit your podcast? And wait, isn't it a BAD thing to edit for time, not content? Don't you want to edit for content without caring about how long it ends up? Or is that only what we do? Anyway, when Mike Nicolas isn't offering advice on TV production to Justin Sevakis, he's making this podcast devoted to anime fandom discussion from a Canadian perspective. Much like the food that Canada eats, the Canadian anime fandom perspective is pretty much exactly the same as the American perspective, only a few days older. Unless they're McCain superfries. Or Smarties. Hell, Canadian Smarties aren't even Smarties! They're M&Ms! Whatever you want to call them, we don't eat the red ones last. Fine, so that marketing campaign died twenty years ago.
Review: Dog Soldier: Shadows of the Past (32:38 - 1:03:44) Daryl gets the ball rolling by talking about this notoriously horrible piece of detritus that should be owned and watched by all, no matter what the nonstop believing opinions of E.E. "Doc" Finnegan are. Like all of our Totally Lame Anime coverage, this is not actually a review so much as a near-complete synopsis. If we offered actual analysis and insight, that would make people want to go see this. Which they should. Listen on and discover for yourself why the cure for AIDS is the deadliest weapon of them all. We forgot to mention that Phantom is white in some shots and black in others.
Review: Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos (1:03:44 - 1:29:10) Andrew from Double Anal Penetration Deluxe (85% of the people who come to this blog are erroneously finding it as they search for YAOI or NARUTO PORN, so what's one more to the list?) writes in to complain about how crappy a cohost (and human being) Jeremy is. His dream that we can all gather together united in our love for Raoh is shattered by Clarissa's intense dislike of him. She also hates Golgo 13, that player hater. Gerald takes point here, as he regales us with a tale of robots (some of whom are rocks), kung fu, and vikings. You either want to watch this show or you don't, and since we only got 3 DVDs worth of it, most people did not. Nuts to you all.
We close things off with James, the Angry Otaku (and furry) responding to General Beefy's latest bit of craziness from Show 61 (other goofball voicemails of his include his not-so-veiled death threat towards GeekNights and his being exposed as a racist due to failing to be able to properly quote this highly illuminating Flash animation, which Gerald watched for about five minutes before realizing the secret), in which he declared that movies and anime are too expensive because used copies of Robot Jox can be had for under $5. Daryl forgot to include this response in Show 62, so here it is now.
The second part of this episode containing the Crystal Triangle review/scene-by-scene summary will be posted by week's end. Maybe.
You thought last week was pain? This week is ALL bad anime. Daryl secretly loves Angel Cop, Gerald is ashamed to own The Humanoid, and Clarissa's blood pressure is DA BOMB when she watches Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyosei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro.
Introduction (0:00 - 24:40) Sexy beast of the Internet Ken Arromdee writes in to ask about whether or not people are full of it when they try to say that Gunslinger Girl is not pandering loli garbage. Daryl reveals his caring, sensitive side. Also, James the Apollo SmileEnablerDenier reveals to us what Viz doesn't want you to know regarding why they weren't at Anime Expo this year by way of his insider connections that let him get interviews with Rintaro. Somehow we end up talking about videogames, and wouldn't you know it: right as we say "Blu-Ray is region free" it turns out that Stranglehold is going to be region locked because GOD FORBID people reverse import the game to see Hard Boiled in high definition. Idiots.
Review: The Humanoid (24:40 - 41:52) Gerald provides a rebuttal to the accusation that we're doing great things for people by reviewing this boring piece of detritus. Wouldn't you know it, right as we say "CPM got the rights for free," former CPM employee Justin Sevakis casts doubt upon that possibility. Anyway, even though Hajime Sorayama drew that box cover, no rational human being wants to remember this tripe. There's not even a Wikipedia entry for it!
The very PROUD guy who is the main bad guy.
How could you tell?!Some of the faces we were talking about during the review
Review: Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyosei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro (41:52 - 1:07:43) Jim from Las Vegas wants more Discipline readings, but TV's Patrick Macias was the alpha and Max's dad was the omega. Clarissa stumbled upon this deviance and genuinely dislikes it, which makes Gerald's genuine love for it all the more endearing. This series broke Clarissa's will and resolve, as did editing this segment. If we never see her again, know that Zaizen Jotaro was her downfall. DA BOMB!
Promo: Anime Pacific (1:07:43 - 1:08:43) Just when you thought the amount of Robot Carnival references couldn't get any greater, Dane and Alex take a breather from making fun of Americans to throw one more onto the pile! Secret spoilers: originally Daryl was going to review Robot Carnival next week, but he called an audible in post-production.
Review: Angel Cop (1:08:43 - 1:44:58) One of the Holy Manga Video Trinity of Suck that has served Daryl well as far as providing panel material over the years. Why, just marvel at that level of detail! All would-be Special Security Force agents who wish to buy Angel Cop should do so off of Amazon.com via clicking that link above! Daryl could have easily made this show the "do nothing but talk about Angel Cop" episode, but instead decided to convey but a portion of its undying might to you. Worry not: Dave and Joel's review of Angel Cop will fill in the missing gaps. To anyone who can translate Japanese: email us and we will send you an MP3 file of one seriously important Japanese discussion. If you can send us back the full unabridged text, that'd be super. Bonus points if you can time the script for us, but Daryl will do that on his own otherwise.
Closing (1:44:58 - 1:51:01) This weekend is Anime Festival Orlando, next weekend is Yasumicon! Somewhere in between we'll find time to finish turning in Otaku USA articles that really should have been finished a while ago, and also watch things. In a meager attempt to be poignant in the face of requests to not intensify the badness (and make no mistake: WE CAN DO THAT), Daryl is going to review the Barefoot Gen anime and manga. Clarissa's reviewing Suzuka Volume 1 even though Funimation refuses to update the mailing address they send this stuff to, and Gerald's not reviewing anything since he's got an Otakon con report to dish out. Since Daryl and Clarissa weren't present, we just might have to get someone else on here who was there. Guests? On this podcast? What a shocking concept!
Everything this week causes pain one way or another as Daryl reviews Demon City Shinjuku, Clarissa reviews Birth / Planet Busters, and Gerald wraps things up with Megazone 23 III.
Introduction (00:00 - 32:38) This week we get a letter from the vice chair of the Providence Anime Conference, who informs us that while they are not looking for staff now, they will be in the near future. All of us at Anime World Order hope that this event DOES NOT turn into some horrible "adult sci-fi" convention, many of which feature such panel topics as "Polyamory," "Bondage or S&M," "Filking," and other horrible things like the "18+ Costume Contest." We'll keep our hopes up. We also address the question of TV anime censorship and the different ways it's handled (see TOTALLY work safe picture below). Finally, we talk about the possibility of showing anime in theaters and the issues with that. Apparently, buying that $8.00 popcorn can be pretty important.
Let's News! (32:39 - 44:20) Megatokyo is NOT MANGA just because it's being published in Japan. That is all. Zac Bertschy interviews Chase Wang, (did he seriously choose that as his English name?) and makes him answer the hard questions as to why things were so disorganized at Anime Expo this year. Starting a concert three hours late is fine, right? We also wonder why Viz had such a small presence at the convention and Del Rey was nowhere to be seen. Apparently, according to some new standards those filthy doujinshi authors will start having to put their names on their Card Captor Sakura loliporn works and label all the contents.
Promo: R5 Central (44:21 - 45:02) Behold a preview of the R5 Central Otakon episodes to come. That dastardly Mike Dent is the only one who got a bumper recording out of Tomokazu Seki, and as a result we don't have one. This shall not be forgotten. No, it shall not.
Review: Demon City Shinjuku (45:03 - 1:21:52) An OAV that's very familiar to anyone who used to watch Saturday Anime on the Sci-Fi Channel in the 90's...OH GOD, MEMORIES OF APOLLO SMILE FLOODING BACK! "Live Action Anime Girl" my ass! The plot to this anime is not only completely unimportant, it's also nearly 20 years old. As a result, Daryl goes through the entire show (to Gerald's silent disapproval for SPOILING IT ALL) since the only REAL reason to watch this cartoon is for the action scenes. Also, its laughably bad dub in which British people try to convince us that they can pull off every accent under the sun. Listen and find out for yourself what happens when you mix spirits with sulfuric acid. Certified 100% Johnny Mnemonic approved, and we're talking about the Region 2 version with even more Beat Takeshi. Pictures forthcoming, but for now I WANT ROOM SERVICE!
Promo: Otaku USA Magazine (1:21:53 - 1:44:06) Just a reminder that Issue 2 should be arriving in stores soon and that you need to not only buy the magazine and read it, but post on their terrifying messageboard proclaiming the absolute superiority of the articles WE wrote over everyone else's. Bwa ha ha ha ha ha.
Review: Megazone 23 The Third, Part 1 and Part 2 (1:22:47 - 1:44:06) Gerald takes a look at a show that does a fine job of beating a classic franchise to the ground, ensuring it can never arise again. The less said about that Playstation 3 videogame of this coming out really soon, the better. Megazone 23 The Third proves that even after 1,000 years, it's still possible for an idol singer to be on the top of the charts. Below are the spectacular videos we were talking about that are sure to give you a Hard-On:
And:
Promo: Otaku Generation (1:44:07 - 1:44:47) Dismayed over the fact that episodes of AWO are now somehow longer than Otaku Generation episodes, Daryl and Gerald invaded their show last week to guarantee that it was the longest recorded episode they'd done to date. Alan had to stay up until about 2 AM editing it down to an acceptable length. WELCOME TO OUR WORLD!
Review: Birth aka Planet Busters (1:44:48 - 2:09:09) Another "classic" from the Streamline Pictures catalog of work that was re-released and re-dubbed by ADV Films. Clarissa tries her best to make sense out of this madness, but we're talking about a cartoon that somehow manages to make chase sequences involving killer robots that are the size of planets boring. Max from Jacksonville provides us with another voicemail, and it's far more exciting than the anime itself. Don't let anyone try and tell you otherwise.
Closing (2:09:10 - 2:15:55) Prepare yourselves. If you thought this week we talked about some terrifying things, next week's vast collection of total suck might prove second only to Uwe Boll's filmography. Daryl will be giving us justice or a b-[CLASSIFIED TOP SECRET] by reviewing the six-part OAV series Angel Cop. You won't find more lovingly crafted optic nerves anywhere else. Clarissa will be taking a look at a show that is AWESOME and features a man whose superhuman power is being incredibly rich. No, not Batman (face it, "unlimited money" is Batman's REAL super power). No, not Iron Man either. She will be reviewing the first six episodes of "Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyosei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro" or Zaizen Jotaro for short. Why just the first six, even though this show's from about a year ago? Well, that's all that got fansubbed, but after this review you all need to contact the responsible parties, perhaps via IRC, and DEMAND the rest. Trust us, it'll be DA BOMB! Finally, Gerald is given the Herculean task of getting through one of the most unforgivingly bad shows released in the 1980's, a one-shot OAV that was released purely to cash in on Hajime Sorayama's Sexy Robots (I TRIPLE DOG DARE you to check out that site while at work), The Humanoid.
Also, everyone who submitted entries for the "name your favorite anime" contest who didn't A.) give us clear reasons WHY that particular show was your favorite and B.) DIDN'T GIVE US YOUR GOD DAMN ADDRESS will have to resubmit their entry. Any and all entries that do not include these things will be deleted because it's taking too much time for us to email everyone back and say "hey, you forgot to do this right."
If you're seeing this page as a result of the link on ANN, we recommend you not listen to this show first. Instead, please click on the Review Index link on the right-hand side of the page and choose a topic of interest to you. You can also click on the Podcast RSS Feed link for a full listing of all of our episodes along with brief synopses of the topics covered.
It's time, it's time, it's...GERALD TIME! The extra drawn-out Show 54 continues as a result of Daryl's moving, so this week is Gerald's review of Black Lion by the almighty Go Nagai. Egged on by Daryl's solo recordings last week, Gerald follows suit.
In hoping to keep the pain to a minimum Gerald decided to read one viewer email. To talk about Kinokuniya Books, Gerald went to it in San Francisco about ten years ago and still has the exact manga anthology that he bought there sitting next to him. WHY? Well, because insanity is endemic in anime fandom and no other reason. Gerald also comments on the lack of anime music on iTunes and is STILL pissed off that the few songs he bought with free promotional iTunes money are lost to him forever in the world of iTunes Digital Rights Management. Also, Gerald reveals a big secret about himself in that he actually enjoys the Kingdom Hearts games, although, like the listener who wrote in, he's not an "SUPER CRAZY INSANE FANFIC/FANART/YAOI Fan" and just enjoys them enough to borrow them. Also, as far as we know, there is no place to find all of Cyborg 009 in complete subtitled format and the closest thing to it is an Australian release of the very good dub, GOD DAMMIT SONY, YOU CAN'T STOP FUCKING UP CAN YOU!? He ends the letter segment with a commentary by R5 Central's Mike Dent on the many times he's been mentioned on the show.
News (12:01 - 17:54)
In the sexiest opening to the news that we've ever done (and also the most obscure ever, does anyone know where that strange MIDI track comes from?) Gerald talks about the recent death of one of the most recognizable composers in anime, Kentaro Haneda, with accompanying sexy music. The questionably unbiased AnimeTV is going to be shown on Comcast Cable. Of course, a video podcast, featuring a bunch of employees of Bang Zoom Entertainment, reviewing work by Bang Zoom Entertainment is, of course, going to be totally unbiased RIGHT!? Also, big surprise, there's going to be a new Gundam TV series named Mobile Suit Gundam 00, which will be incredibly popular but will still be awful because the worst director working in anime is at the helm, Seiji Mizushima. A man who absolutely thinks he's some sort of comedian when he's not funny at all. No, the same joke for 52 episodes is NOT funny! It's also being written by Yousuke Kuroda who is the most up and down writer in anime with the ability to write such amazing shows like Battle Athletes Victory, Magical Project S (probably the best Tenchi related thing done), and Ring ni Kakero, but then turns it all round to write utter shit like Please Teacher!, Panzar Dragoon (Gerald watched this show with an ADV voice actress who was embarrassed to find out later that what she was watching was something ADV put out).
Review: Black Lion (17:55 - 38:23)
Gerald came into Black Lion completely by accident when Clarissa got it free in the mail with a purchase from ADV's website and Gerald traded for the Kenshin OAVs. Gerald is extremely glad he did so as Black Lion is quite possibly the best hour of insanity and destruction ever produced delivered like only Go Nagai can produce! The is the only show featuring cyborg ninjas/samurai, plasma bombs, time machines, fire bombs, stabbing, head crushing, missile shooting, fire spitting, beheading, head chopping (yes they are distinct), and Oda Nobunaga! What more could you possibly want! Screenshots to follow possibly.
Closing (38:24 - 39:23)
Next week, we're not entirely sure, but it might be the all Clarissa episode, maybe, maybe not, we'll see. Perhaps we'll be back to the regular show, only time will tell.
In what will go down in history as the AWO's darkest hour (it was Gerald's idea!), this episode is entirely devoted to hentai. Daryl reviews the extensively surreal Kanashimi no Belladonna, Clarissa reviews the manga Pink Sniper by her favorite hentai artist Kengo Yonekura, and Gerald fulfills the dream by providing us with a highly-researched review of Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend.
Know that this special commemorative Photoshop was...shall we say, OFFERED to us (you know, Comics-One is no more and their entire release of this has been scanned...hmm, ideas are forming...):
Remember, it's not porn if you don't draw the dick. Ikegami = ALL CLASS.
Introduction (0:00 - 22:25)
In the emails, we're told that there IS quite a bit of horror anime after all. It's just that most all of it is either hentai or isn't stuff we'd consider scary, such as Serial Experiments Lain or Paranoia Agent. Actually, it's a total misuse of the term for American fans to call pornographic Japanese cartoons and comics "hentai" since that's how you'd describe a person, but it's not like it's the first time that American anime fandom has taken a Japanese word and misconstrued its meaning, and it won't be the last. We also learn that even American movie horror fans are mentally decimated by Waita Uziga's manga. People have been watching Mind Game as a result of Daryl's review, which leads to a grand dismissive of experimental cinema that is sure to cause the TRUE FILM SCHOLARS to turn their noses up at how primitive we are. So be it. Waking Life is still a crappy movie, and so is Garden State. Carl Horn calls in to reveal to us a brand new insight about the End of Evangelion that dawned on him as a result of our Moon Phase review. Somebody notify Aaron Clark!
Let's News! (22:25 - 36:27)
Digital Meme is going to be releasing 55 of those really old anime titles from 1928-1936 which were recently discovered on DVD in a four-disc set entitled the "Japanese Anime Classic Collection" on April 30th. The all-region set is going to be $110, and it'll include English subtitles (plus Japanese, Chinese, and Korean). Still, the influence these have on modern anime is tenuous at best, since these are from the silent era. Daryl is so totally not buying into this post on Conversations on Ghibli, but he recommends everyone read it anyway since he clearly just has an inadequate brain capacity. Perhaps aliens turned him into a Scotsman. More likely, he's just living up to his Magic: The Gathering card representation as "The Purveyor of Violence." There's yet another "there's gonna be a live-action Ghost in the Shell!" story going around, but not only did they already make The Matrix (it's totally stretching it, but here's a page comparing screenshots from both), none of these "live action versions of anime" rumors should be taken to heart unless shooting actually starts. Clarissa is not pleased with Hollywood's trend of doing bad remakes and screen adaptations of stories that are excessively dumbed down or unnecessarily updated. However, she can't wait to see how Napoleon Dynamite influences anime. We talk some more about Tokyopop's impending release of the Twelve Kingdoms novels, which Daryl mentioned during his review of it. Hajime no Ippo actually did really well on TV in Japan, which makes its lack of popularity here in the US all the more tragic. Maybe if they didn't release a 75 episode series one disc at a time...
Review: Kanashimi no Belladonna (36:27 - 1:01:30)
Daryl talks about the final film released by Mushi Productions, the third of the so-called Animerama trilogy. We could talk about this movie, but suffice it to say that this movie is made by one of the men who directed Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight, which is what we best associate The Nish with. Yamato? What's that? Also, behold these clips from Belladonna NOW before Youtube takes them down and deletes our account for violation of its terms of use, though we say they're more "mature content" than "pornographic":
Assuming Youtube has not deleted those videos and removed our account, pat yourself on the back because you have now seen the best parts of this film. Gerald's recollection was slightly off, as those are in fact RABBITS flying out of that guy's butt, not fish. Fish are involved in a different shot.
Clarissa made a reference to Tommy Johnson, but Daryl's only knowledge of him would be from O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and he only saw that once.
Art Nouveau -- apparently that's the style this moviefilm was supposedly done in
200, by the United States propaganda department - Daryl happens to know that the style shown here was REAL style Belladonna was done in. The name for this style is, shall we say, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds-influenced. No, not the Shatner song! (The Beatles? Who are they?)
Promo: R5 Central (1:01:30 - 1:02:29)
Courageous mecha pilot/large black man (hint hint, ladies...though just so you know, PER HIS OWN ADMISSION, it's a climax the moment he starts!) Mike Dent is not a number. He is a free man! Be sure to check out Episode 33 featuring special guest monologue by Daryl Surat! He's got a special comment for tokusatsu fandom, and it starts around the 17 minute mark. CLI-MAX JUMP! ii JUMP! ii JUMP! Suge-JUMP! ii JUMP! ii JUMP! Suge-JUMP!
Review: Pink Sniper (1:02:29 - 1:25:04)
Man, you know this episode is trouble when the most normal hentai title being discussed is the one that contains cow people having sex. Clarissa throws her Magic: The Gathering card representation for a loop, since despite the fact that Pink Sniper is a porn manga from a female author, it's not yaoi. Well, if you don't count the sequel, anyway. Kengo Yonekura is one of Clarissa's favorite artists, and part of that has to do with the fact that the guys have faces and aren't just invisible aside from their peen. How are the people who buy this [guys] supposed to mentally swap out the guy for themselves if they can see his face?! Even regular porn knows not to do that! To the disbelief of all, this is commercially available in English thanks to Eros Comix, which is actually still releasing this stuff even after Dark Horse bought out Studio Proteus years ago. This is probably the only ACTUAL porn review of the show, and as such, Daryl asks THE TOUGH QUESTIONS~!
Yonekura Kengo's web site - the site moved recently, so unfortunately her gallery is down at the moment, but you can still access her works listing.
You can order Pink Sniper directly from Eros Comix or from bookstores like Amazon; it's cheaper on Amazon than most other places, but they don't appear to have it in stock so it could take a while
Promo: Happy House of Hentai (1:25:04 - 1:25:27)
Lord Kaosu and Hello Kitty just hit Show # 50, so congrats are in order! Check them out for hentai reviews of...um, The Sims 2...and uh...Speed Grapher. And Dead or Alive Xtreme 2--wait a second, those aren't hentai! All that Phantasy Star Universe Lord K's been playing lately must have thrown him for a loop. Why, he's even started up a PSU-only podcast. Curse you people and your...work ethic! You know, TECHNICALLY, we've released over 50 things too, if you count the stuff that wasn't actually shows! Yeah, that's the ticket!
Review: Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend (1:25:27 - 1:53:39)
Did Wesley Willis compose that music or something? Of all the segments Gerald has ever done, he has probably done the most research and preparation on this one, another winner brought to us by The Nish. Brought about by a request from Teleport City (Keith's review of Overfiend is up, even though it's not listed on the front page...WONDER WHY), this could have easily been half the episode on its own, what with Gerald's Magic: The Gathering card representation and all, so a lot had to go for the sake of time, such as Daryl talking about how much he wishes this anime never existed, and that the existence of Overfiend is why he never really tells anyone that he's an anime fan to this day, which doesn't stop his cockblocking friends from chiming in with "you know, DARYL is an ANIME FAN!" which has since been upped to "you know, DARYL is an INTERNET CELEBRITY because he has a PODCAST about ANIME!" Swell, guys. Thanks for the help there. Anyway, what remains is the result of much editing and reorganizing, and that's our official excuse for why this episode is a week late. Watch this space for what is sure to be a great deal of supplemental links.
Promo: Otaku Generation (1:53:39 - 1:53:53)
Dan "The Fan" is gone, but in his place is...A GIRL?! And...KYLE?! Wow, I wonder what he's going to review after that extended hiatus brought about by being burned out from watching mediocre anime. Wait, E's Otherwise? E'S OTHERWISE?! One of the more notoriously crappy shows in recent years? And he was looking FORWARD to it?! Yeah, we get the feeling that Kyle will be itching for another hiatus real soon. And while we all got copies of the first volume of Mechademia to review several weeks ago, Bryce actually beat us to the punch since a fan sent in a copy. Man. We freaking fail at the timeliness.
Closing (1:53:53 - 2:02:10)
Can you believe that this week's episode is LONGER than the latest episode of Otaku Generation?! Special belated congratulations to Tim Eldred, whose graphic novel Grease Monkey has won the 2007 award for Best Book for Young Adults from the American Library Association. Plus, if you purchase the Viz DVD release of the Densha Otoko movie, it includes a commentary track by TV's Patrick Macias, Most Dangerous Tomohiro Machiyama, and "Jay Tack." Does japattack.com even get updated anymore? We're not quite sure. Next week, we have ANOTHER astonishing idea, and this time it's Daryl's fault! For you see, next time around we're not only going to review just Volume 1 of the title we're reviewing as opposed to the entire series, but we're also going to review things that we've never ever seen before and have absolutely no idea as to what they're about! Chris over at ADV sent us a bunch of stuff to review as well as give away, and so Daryl's got an advance review of Le Chevalier d'Eon (set for release 2/20), Gerald takes a look at Utawarerumono since he saw the preview for it on The Anime Network and thought it looked interesting, and Clarissa tackles Volume 1 of Nerima Daikon Brothers! Don't bother spoiling the secret, since this episode's actually already recorded and we just suck when it comes to editing. Namely, that we have to edit at all. All the smart podcasters never seem to need to do that.
This week, our special guest is Steve Harrison, which is fitting because this week none of us have a clue what we're talking about! Gerald rants about the state of the anime industry, Daryl does a braindump of MD Geist, and Clarissa reviews Shinesman! Informed viewpoints? What are those?! Click Here to Download
Introduction (0:00 - 10:04) Ten minutes only? Well, that's because the one audio feedback we played was responded to over the course of about 90 minutes (edited down to 60), and it's available as a separate download. Wait, it still takes us ten minutes just to say "hey, this is who we are and this is what we're doing this week"?! Normally when we edit this show, we all edit our own segments, then Daryl pieces everything together and listens to the whole thing to make sure that everything sounds okay. This week, the "listens to the whole thing" part was skipped since there was so much to edit through. Whether or not this resulted in tragedy has yet to be conveyed to us by our listeners.
Bonus one hour long response to the voicemail sent to us by GeekNights - we were going to start this off by all saying LET'S DO THIS in unison, but we couldn't actually...say that in unison, so we gave up; actually this entire account is a fabrication for the sake of entertainment
Anime News Network's entry for John Swasey - he's an ADV dub actor/director guy who worked on their Gamera releases; even got to put a full-on parody dub of Gamera on the actual official DVD
Space Webzine Yamato - we linked to this before and we're doing it again now that Steve's on the show!
Mur Lafferty - she's a person who does podcasts and wrote a book about podcasting containing lots of advice we don't follow yet due to lack of funds/stupidity
Promo: GeekNights (10:04 - 11:14) Since most people who listen to podcasts are well, other podcasters, you probably know what we mean when we say that coming up with a promo that doesn't sound totally awful and contrary to the nature of your show is really hard work, no matter how many actual podcasts you've got under your belt. It took us forever just to come up with our one AWO promo, and even that sounds kind of...fake. Rym and Scott agree, and even though they've recorded hundreds of podcasts, they never got around to doing any promos until now.
FANBOY RAGE RANT TIME: The Anime Industry's Licensing Practices Are Stupid (11:14 - 51:50) Gerald brings us back to our roots, since we haven't done a full-on rant segment since Show # 2. There's really not much structure to this, and truth be told it's doubtful that any of what is said here is supported by the actual facts, but since when does THAT ever stop anyone on the Internet, huh?! Or the news. Or the current best-selling book in the US.
Promo: Anime Pulse (51:50 - 52:20) This episode was so long that it was decided to just cut out all that music in the beginning since hey, everyone (except us) has heard that Bleach song a hundred times by now! Anyway, not only is Anime Pulse one of the most popular anime podcasts out there, but we won their Podcast Pickle contest and in so doing received the Tenchi Universe box set, a Death Note (like a notebook that looks like the Death Note), and signed yaoi fanart of Ichigo and Batou as drawn by Erin from the Ninja Consultant podcast. Clarissa called dibs on the Death Note, and since these things all look the same, Daryl went and wrote her name in it so that if it ever got lost, people would know it was her Death Note. Gerald said he hated Hiroshi Negishi during the Shadow Skill segment last week, so that meant he couldn't have the Tenchi Universe boxed set since he directed that too, which means that Gerald gets the yaoi fanart and Daryl gets the DVD set. Hey, it's what they asked for!
Not Really a Review of the Second Worst Anime Ever Made: MD Geist Director's Cut (52:20 - 1:22:41) We may never agree on what the worst anime ever made is, but after you hear Daryl's summary description of MD Geist (as was requested of him!), we should all be able to reach the consensus that MD Geist is the second worst. Naturally, it has been CPM's company spokesmecha since the inception of the company...even though MD Geist is not a mecha or a robot or anything like that. MD Geist is actually one of the best-selling anime titles OF ALL TIME, but listen to this so you never need actually watch it for yourself. Even though we know you're all going to go see it now.
ANN's entry for MD Geist - there are two people we know that actually like this and they're both anime con staffers
Anime on DVD's review of MD Geist - Chris Beveridge gives MD Geist a "D" for content, and it's not like he's using Anime Jump's review system where the "F" rating was hilariously bad and the "D" rating is the real worst rating; also, he says that MD Geist II has "a good narrative and streamlined a lot of things"
Review: Shinesman (1:22:41 - 1:38:38) Fulfilling another listener request, Clarissa reviews this beauty of an OAV, a parody sentai anime with one of the most entertaining (albeit not exactly accurate) dubs ever made. So when the heck is someone going to release the manga for this one, anyway?! Come on, Media Blasters!
Closing (1:38:38 - 1:45:43) This episode nearly ruined all of our lives. Next week, Gerald's going to review Goshogun: The Time Etranger, which is also known as Time Stranger. It is not to be confused with the Rintaro movie of the same name, but apparently it's confusing enough that even the back of the DVD case calls the thing by two different names. Daryl's bouncing over to the other end of the good/bad spectrum by reviewing Discotek Media's latest classic anime release, Puss n' Boots! Finally, who likes short shorts on little boys? That's right, Michael Jackson and Clarissa. She's going to be reviewing CLAMP Campus Detectives.
Just so everyone knows, we may have to take a short bit of time off soon. With Anime Festival Orlando coming up--which we've all got panels to prepare for--and then Otakon the week right after that, things are going to get pretty hectic for all of us near the end of this month and the time we'd spend on the podcast is going to have to be spent putting our presentations together. Maybe we can be superhuman and accomplish both tasks, but in case we can't, we're letting you know now and in the weeks to come.
