Who is the mysterious Jason Thompson? Whatever could have inspired him to write Manga: The Complete Guide and King of RPGs ? How can one man give away so much manga for free every day for a year? How does he manage to write for not just Otaku USA but also Comixology? And how many websites can one dude have, anyway? His Twitter account just isn't enough to answer all this. Though for the record, the short answer is "because he hit his Otaku Expiration Date." Indeed, he just got engaged a few days ago! If our kung fu were as strong as Joe McCulloch's, we would have remembered this first half of his writeup on the English language comics anthology "Manga" when we asked the question about it. But we forgot. Since the time of the recording, the second half of his writeup has been posted. Read those, retain their knowledge, and you shall be a Formidable Opponent (TM).

Review: Uzumaki (37:51 - 1:01:47)

Review: Crying Freeman (1:01:47 - 1:33:42)
Gerald reviews the most well-known collaboration between ultimate manga master Kazuo Koike and artist Ryoichi Ikegami among US readers. This was the first manga Paul Chapman ever saw when he was a young child. He opened it to a random page and saw a dude getting--as he phrases it--"a hummer." Speaking of which, look for Daryl to make another guest appearance on the Greatest Movie EVER! podcast once Paul figures out that, rather than waiting until the end of the month, he can delete an old episode to free up space on his Libsyn account in order to post a new episode. Like what we just ended up doing to bring you this! [12/10 update: here you go! We talked about Crank, Crank 2: High Voltage, and Gamer. There's a good chance that you've seen the live-action movie (corresponding podcast currently offline), as its infamy and legend helped shape Media Blasters into the entity it is today. If you have NOT seen it, then your life is incomplete until you remedy the situation. But that is merely scratching the surface of what awaits you in this manga. Sadly, it cannot be purchased in the US, but there are full scanlations available. What is Riki-Oh about? What is going on in this comicbook? That...is the question.

(FUCKIN' CHICKENSHIT. FUCKIN', FUCKIN', SHIT, FUCKIN' SHIT!). For it shall be the second pillar of the Holy Manga Video Trinity of Suck, Violence Jack. Mike Toole mysteriously vanished during this part of the show due to the magic of post-production. We might have actually discussed the news for these 30-40 minutes. Or we might have just talked a lot about girls not wearing any pants, be they animated, drawn, or otherwise.

Review: Baccano! (1:06:49 - 1:42:19)
Since Daryl and Mike were the only ones who'd seen the series, this review is more or less spoiler-free. It is highly recommended that you NOT read the Wikipedia entry for this show, or the ANN encyclopedia entry, or the ANN review, or pretty much anything prior to watching this series. Not even the back of the DVD. No, you should just trust in Daryl and Mike's good judgment here and the fact that they both consider it their pick for best series of 2007 (or 2009 depending on how you want to count it). Note that Gerald and Clarissa upon hearing this review decided to watch Akikan and that one about the gay vampire butler instead of this show. This is like what happened with the New Getter Robo review all over again. Wait, they did watch that eventually. Er, Godannar then. Only this one doesn't involve robots or fanservice. This sort of thing was going on even before Daryl was crowned the Pied Piper of Nerds along with White Daryl.

Let's News! (0:00 - 33:47)
The news was like, a month out of date when we recorded it...months ago! So we recorded an addendum to it...like one month ago! So yeah, there's this guy named Chris Handley. You know, the guy who got busted because customs inspected a package of manga he bought from Japan and declared it mad gross. We still have no idea what manga it was he bought. Some people say it is "the gay," as stated by the ugly freckle face girl in Transporter 3, but radicals like Carl Horn and Jason Thompson wrote some cool things on that one website about what this all MEANS, maaan. You know, the one with the news...what was it? Oh yeah, Anime Vi--no wait, the site they and we steal all OUR news items from. Oh yeah, Anime News Network.

In other news, Gonzo is cutting down on the amount of bad shows they make each year to only about four or so bad shows a year. Also, anime studios in Singapore are being all like "I'M A COMPUTER! STOP ALL THE DOWNLOADING!" Again. And which will be more dire: Dragonball Evolution or Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li? You know what? It doesn't matter. Stop talking on and on about live-action anime adaptations. We don't care. ADV is resurrecting their porn/quasi-porn line to GET PAID, YO, and Funimation posted an episode of Sgt Frog dubbed to Youtube, the localization of which is...different from the original.

For some reason, they're making some Maria Watches Over Us in 3-D. Also, Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger is out. In fact, why are you listening to this podcast? You could be watching more Hajime no Ippo right now. Even though the music's different and they just might be playing up the gayness factor in a cynical grab for more viewers. You could of course read the manga, since much like Black Lagoon and Monster it's more or less identical. But you won't hear the jet engine during the Dempsey Roll, and the jet engine is the most important part. The final news is that our interview with Kazuko Tadano and Hiromi Matsushita (whose name we couldn't remember!) that we did at Otakon will probably never get posted since the audio quality is so terrible. A pity too, since we learned the secrets of Crystal Triangle!

It's short for ANime ONline Podcast! It was formerly the Anime and Television in Toronto Podcast, but then they realized that now that The Shield is over and Prison Break is ending, there's no reason to watch television anymore. Jack Bauer may be fighting the goddamned Candyman, but it's hard to care when you know that ZOMBIE TONY is around the corner. He may have got shot...IN THE NECK...but he also crossed Robocop. And even though that was only a little less dumb than David Palmer, it's...oh right, this podcast. They tend to cover more recent fansub-only titles if that's your thing!

Review: Yakitate! Japan (1:32:36 - 2:01:21)
This is a cartoon that applies the shonen action/adventure formula to baking bread combined with outlandish Mr. Ajikko-like food hallucinations. You now have all the information you need to decide whether or not you wish to watch this cartoon.

I could certainly add a great deal of notes with screenshots, and bread reactions and such. But perhaps all I really need to include is the second ED credits that so mesmerized Gerald.

Next time, Gerald's reviewing Shootfighter Tekken (the manga of which was partially released in the US under the name Tough), Clarissa's seriously actually for real this time reviewing Part 4 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Daryl is reviewing Hirohiko Araki's single greatest work, Baoh the Visitor. This was originally held off for over a year in the hopes that Dave and Joel would do it, but they ignored the pleas. The gambit has paid off.

Review: Bubblegum Crisis (43:33 - 1:45:46)
Daryl...sort of talks about Bubblegum Crisis for an hour. Maybe. The way he sees it, all the cool anime podcasts already talked about it so he has nothing to lose!

Bubblegum Crisis is, as the title card suggests, the story of [the] Knight Sabers. Not the Knight Saviors.

BGC was made in the 1980s.

Daley Wong and Leon McNichol, the two longest-living members of the AD Police. Daley, if you couldn't tell, is a flamboyant homosexual of the type and variety never to be respected by the Iron Shiek. All Leon ever does right is take his shades off, put his shades on, say stupid things, and occasionally shoot someone. So THAT'S where CSI: Miami came from. YEAHHHHHH!

This is Priss in her concert gear. You might have to squint to notice it, but she looks KINDA like Pris from Blade Runner!

But despite the haircut, she is not "the gay," as that ugly freckleface girl from Transporter 3 would say. Otherwise, she'd be enjoying this more.

If she was, there'd be scenes of her doing this sort of thing. BGC is not exactly a subtle series. So stop contemplating whether Sylia is a boomer. (PS: Deckard = NOT A REPLICANT, NO MATTER WHAT)

In addition to her skeletal structure, Priss is constantly breaking the rules. Observe this BLATANT DISREGARD for the laws of physics.

Sylia Stingray, by contrast, complies with the laws of physics. This is the law of buoyancy. Though I guess buoyancy isn't a law so much as a force. Fuck it.

The wardrobe for Vision's truly, truly outrageous number comes to us courtesy of the Cyber City Oedo Mercenary Girl's Closet.

But if you're thinking of cosplaying it, know that there are downsides. MORE LIKE BACKSIDES, AMIRITE

Vision's character designer was Satoshi Urushihara. The breasts on his female characters are always that shiny because he uses his many, many love dolls as reference. Gerald only has one inflatable anime girl love doll for the moment.

Nene is the worst character, so naturally the Japanese gave her an entire episode. Nothing "proto"-moe about it!

Largo however, is the best character other than Sylia. That Hiroaki Gouda (No. Edam? No.) probably designed him is a true oddity, as he directed the Nene episode then spent the rest of his life directing all the Ah My Goddess! anime.

Maybe Masami Obari might have designed Largo. If Masami Obari is involved and it does not involve either Largo or Terry Bogard, then I'm probably not interested.Obari-tan wants us all to know: this person is DEFINITELY Australian.

As a rule, it is pointless to bother doing high-definition remasterings for most non-theatrical anime made prior to the onset of HD. However, certain bits of hilarious English/Engrish text become more easily noticeable here. WHAT'S THAT BETWEEN THOSE BOOKS NENE, HUH? This must be the REAL reason PT Chapman loves you so. PS: Mackie is "the character we, the viewer, would actually be." Dwell on THAT.

Oh yeah, there's mecha in this series, which is why it's awesome. Sylia is the leader!

Nobody gonna beat my car / It's gonna break the speed of sound / Ooh, it's a killing machine / It's got everything / Except for a girl in powered armor riding a giant fucking motorcycle / But other than that, it's cool

This is the part Sonoda was responsible for; the mechanical designs of the hardsuits. Also, the little girl in the first episode FO' SHO'. Note the presence of the high heels which make this awesome and EMPOWERING and why Japanese animation is mature advanced sci-fi storytelling with STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS blah blah blahThis is clearly the Shinji Aramaki part. Because it's AWESOME.

Motorcycles that transform into robots...AND THEY CAN FLY? If they can fly, why even HAVE motorcycles? Only Shinji Aramaki truly knows.This is what happens to most members of the AD Police that are not in helicopters. (If they're in helicopters, they get immolated due to the freaking chopper exploding. Holy CRAP.) Note that this guy lost his hands before losing his arms, and that head comes off about a second after this screenshot was taken.

See? You should go watch this cartoon. Again, if need be.

With Anime Weekend Atlanta mere DAYS away, we managed to get this one edited in between the time spent scrambling to get our panels all put together. Clarissa's reviewing the BL manga Dog Style, Gerald reviews the terrible wannabe cyberpunk OAV Burn Up! which unfortunately got multiple sequels, and Daryl reviews the awesome non-wannabe cyberpunk OAV Cyber City Oedo 808 which unfortunately got no sequels at all.

After lamenting our inability to play children's videogames, we answer a voicemail about "real giant robot shows," which slightly confuses us. Hopefully we answered the question. We also read an email about our experience with seeing anime in theaters, which isn't all that much. For those curious, here's the IMDB page for the 2006 Danish animated movie "Princess." Since this was recorded, we did actually get a copy of this movie, and you have our assurances that although there are some moments in it with live-action, it's not another Rock-a-Doodle. We wrap things up with a quick overview of all the panels we'll be doing at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2008. Spread the word!

Let's News! (29:58 - 54:44)
So there was this MSNBC article about anime that has the Internet in a buzz right now, and rather than just say what everyone everywhere's already said, we decided to interview TV's Patrick Macias, who was [mis]quoted in the article, to get to the bottom of how it came about, what got misrepresented, and even what it got right. The audio quality on this segment isn't very good, we know. We blame Patrick for pounding on the table constantly. Just like we blame him for everything. Here's "The Incredibly Strange Mutant Creatures who Rule the Universe of Alienated Japanese Zombie Computer Nerds (Otaku to You)," the article we mentioned from the March/April 1993 issue of Wired (the first issue) as being where the "otaku = techno-geek" notion came about. Though as Lawrence Eng astutely notes in the comments, it is preceded by this December 1990 article entitled "I'm Alone But Not Lonely: Japanese Otaku-Kids colonize the Realm of Information and Media, A Tale of Sex and Crime from a Faraway Place."

Review: Dog Style (54:44 - 1:13:10)
Mara from the Providence Anime Conference sent us a voicemail in response to the podcast from "the 25th, which was yesterday." What that actually means is that it's a voicemail in response to the podcast from July 25th, which was not yesterday. In fact, it was the podcast from July 25th, 2007. We just forgot to play the message. For a year. PAC's actually happening in about two weeks, so we figured this was the absolute latest time to actually put this thing into the show. Mara sincerely hopes the con doesn't end up being nothing but sleaze and porn, so it's only natural that we relay that sentiment right before Clarissa reviews one of Modoru Motoni's BL manga offerings. Like Poison Cherry Drive, Dog Style was released by Media Blasters through their Kitty Media label. So far Volume 1 and Volume 2 are out, with the third volume to be released in the future. This review's a little short, so if you want more Clarissa, check out the latest episode of Destroy All Podcasts DX where they reviewed Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Granted, it should have been Daryl on this one as he's the one who's seen the movie the most times, but Jeremy really wanted a girl on the show. Does that make Jeremy the John McCain of anime podcasting? We're pretty sure the answer is yes.

Review: Burn Up! (1:13:10 - 1:36:05)
Gerald plunges into the depths of the "the world should've forgotten about this" pit to bring us this 1991 OAV that was somehow so popular in the US, we got three followups made to it. And two of those were TV series. In our entire lives, we have never seen anyone who genuinely LIKES Burn Up!, so it is a complete mystery as to how this came about. Pay special attention to the dub of this one, as it was one of the first dubs made by AD Vision, as they were known at the time. Don't worry: we've got sound bites! Due to some level balance mishaps, Clarissa's audio on this portion is much lower than everyone else's, but you should still be able to hear her if you BELIEVE IN THE FUTURE:

Five months this podcast has been out and they have not one, not two, but THREE serviceable promos? And we've been around what, almost three years now and we still have the one crummy one? CURSE YOU, REED RICHARDS! [shakes fist] At least, we assume he's to blame as this is run by a fantastic four! True to the name, this show's about everything "awesome," and then some. I say "and then some" since they did episodes about Smash Brothers Brawl, Rock Band, and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Also, Indy IV. Still, give them a shot since their show actually comes out each week. Whatta concept!

Review: Cyber City Oedo 808 (1:36:52 - 2:18:36)
Daryl tried to shorten this review. Really, he did. But he didn't have it in him to make this one single segment shorter than your typical entire episode of Fast Karate for the Gentleman, especially not where Yoshiaki Kawajiri is concerned. But unlike all the previous Kawajiri-related AWO segments, this one's not actually a scene-by-scene description of what happens in it. In fact, it might just be Kawajiri's best work, which is why it's odd that hardly anybody ever remembers it. Not even us, until we did the review! That is a damn crime for which we should be locked up in orbital space prison for three centuries, but fortunately we're all out on parole doing podcasts in exchange for reduced time. For every minute of edited podcast we release, we get time off our sentences. Now you know why the episodes run so long!

This is Shunsuke Sengoku. That's a jitte he's holding. I don't remember if you could pick up jitte in the Neo-Geo side-scrolling beat-em-up that was also named Sengoku, where ninja and cowboys fought side by side. I played a lot of Shogun: Total War back in the day, and so I know the word "sengoku" refers to "the country at war" when all those daimyo were fighting over control of Japan. We need a sequel to that game.

This is his gun. You mean to tell me they can make TWO TV shows out of Burn Up!, but nothing for Cyber City Oedo? This is already all the premise one needs!

This is Gabimaru Rikiya, but nobody ever calls him that in the show itself. He's just "Goggles" or "Go-gl" or what have you. In addition to being a cyber hacker, he's also a former boxer. Or at least I assume that since he decides the best way to defeat evil robots is to PUNCH THEM.

Put your peen away: THAT'S A DUDE. Merrill Yanagawa aka Benten does not ride a space motorbike and have a chain wrapped around his chest, but he wields MONOFILAMENT WIRE~! which automatically makes him the best character. On second thought, take your peen back out.
For a cop, you sure don't know much; those are Cyberjunkies! Oh wait, this isn't the Streamline dub of 8 Man After. This is a fine representation of what the cyber criminals look like. Notice the Hokuto no Ken thug motif present throughout this cartoon. Further proof of its quality, I tell you.
Wait a second, is that...Donna Troy?!

Nothing better exhibits Yoshiaki Kawajiri's unmatched talent for character and fashion design than this Brigitte Nielsen lookalike, but giving the Shoryuken to the robot won out for being the embedded image in the MP3.

The next episode of AWO hopefully shouldn't take TOO long since after AWA we're just about done as far as anime con season goes. Gerald's going to be reviewing the Witchblade anime, and despite having bought every volume of this series as FUNimation released it, he was able to mentally block out the Gonzo logo that's on all the packaging and is displayed at the start of each disc. Perhaps he was looking at something else! Daryl's reviewing the 3-part OAV Strait Jacket, soon to be released by Manga Video, and Clarissa's reviewing the highly infectious Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture, which for incomprehensible reasons has been licensed by absolutely nobody. It's all about bacteria, so see you next "decultured"!

Featuring Dave Riley from Fast Karate for the Gentleman, and Mike Toole as the Voice of God. Recorded Saturday night from about 1 AM to 4 AM WHILE COMPLETELY SOBER. Except for those Irish anime podcasters. You can't keep them away from the bottle.

While I'm not going to disable comments for this post, I am going to say that you should probably leave comments there instead of here. You can leave comments here too if you really want, but it'll just mean we have to follow TWO sets of comments for the same show. Crazy, man.

No point in reintroducing ourselves since this is the third part of what is technically one episode! Note: the Deep Discount 20% off sale of madness is underway as is Right Stuf's Geneon closeout. We've each spent so much money that we should set ourselves up as affiliates or something at this point.

Bandai Visual to be liquidated. Now let's hope that Bandai Visual's business practices don't infect Bandai Entertainment's. And speaking of companies on the rocks, Tokyopop to be Liquidated. Look forward to Tokyopop to redouble their efforts on getting Princess Ai out there in FORCE. Also, here's an update on the layoffs that happened. Super Techno Arts has halted the distribution of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Anime in the US. Which doesn't make that much of a difference since you couldn't actually find the show anyway! And on the subject of Jojo's, here's what happens when religious fundamentalists WHO DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING BUY THE SHOW start complaining about religious insensitivity. Also, Bandai Entertainment talks about increasing episode count on their DVDs. Towards the Terra will get 8 episodes a disk and Gurren Lagann will get 9 episodes a disk for the sub only release as an example. ADV also confirms that there's more ADV manga coming in the form of Yotsuba& and Cromartie. Woo! That just happens to be the two manga series that we care about too! Also, Gurren Lagann is getting on the Sci-Fi channel. Were people watching their Ani-Mondays (be careful, that link is dangerous)? Gaogaigar is getting the second half of the show released on DVD this coming August. This show sold so horribly that they dropped the dub. If you didn't pick this up before there's a box set for the first series coming out very soon too. Ed Chavez of the Mangacast podcast has put out a rather complete list of all manga that has been cancelled in the US. If you read a lot, chances are this is a rather annoying list (what happened to the rest of Exaxxion!?). Also, we tread in to dangerous territory by talking about a potentially incredible video game, Capcom vs. Tatsunoko! If you don't know what the deal is with this well listen to the podcast and check out this list to see what could potentially be in the game. Maybe now you can see why we're excited?

Before we dive into the garden of madness, we play two highly appropriate voicemails. This segment might cover information that's common knowledge, but think of it as an extended introduction to doujinshi in general. What is the Comic Market? - Courtesy of Zero-chan, here's a presentation from February by the Comic Market Preparation Committee that goes over a lot of info about the event.

Ketto.com - This site is Japanese only, so it may not be useful for many of you, but this site has a listing of probably every single doujin event being held. Unfortunately they don't have anything before 2000 listed, but for anything recent or upcoming you're good.

Akihabara Channel - For the English-only crowd, here's one you can read. It only covers events in the Tokyo and Osaka areas, but that's rather a lot of them.

Doujinshi Database - Gerald and I are contributers on this site and I spend way too many hours adding books, artists and events (pulled from Ketto) along with romanizing titles. Like most doujinshi stuff overseas, there's rather a lot of porn, but it's intended to be an info repository for all doujins. There's a lot of non-porn getting added currently off listings from Toranoana and such, and if you want more non-smut info available please sign up and help out. There's so many artists, writers and books we need all the contributions we can get.

Purchasing doujinshi:

JPQueen - This store sells commercial manga, anime and goods along with doujinshi and everything is in English. Their prices can be a bit high on some things but you can find some good deals too, and I've never had an issue buying from them.

Happy Otaku Site - This one's been around for a long time now. I've ordered from him a couple of times, and he seems reliable. He stocks some older books and smaller fandoms as well.

Comiket Online Shopping Service - Buy through Comiket here, but honestly their prices are rather high and for fujoshi the selection is pretty bad.

Again, there are a lot of small stores online like Manga Store Kawaii, Kitty Cafe (what used to be the Aestheticism Cybershoppe for you longer-term yaoi fans) and the shop linked with the English version of Akibablog.

If you want to buy from sites like Yahoo! Japan Auctions or Toranoana (or Toranoana Princess Side) you'll need a proxy service. There are a lot of these, many very small and mostly known of through word of mouth, so it can be difficult to find the best one. Rinkya is one of the biggest and most convenient, but their fees are quite high so you pay a lot for that. I generally use Celga; they're a bit less convenient but their fees are somewhat lower.

As I mentioned, there's also digital doujin purchases. I usually prefer to get physical books, because sometimes there are things that just don't carry over into the scans. For example, I have a couple of Black Jack doujins with textured covers so they have a particular varied feel when you hold them; there are also some books with elaborate layered covers and such. But if all you'd be reading is scans anyway, and/or you can't find the books, putting down a few bucks for one of these is a pretty good deal.

DLsite has an English version which makes things easier, but you can also purchase from the original Japanese version of DLsite, which sometimes has different items; anime blog Heisei Democracy has a guide for purchasing from the Japanese version. I had thought it was possible to purchase from Digiket but it looks like they may require a Japanese credit card or prepaid web money card.

We didn't actually record a closing segment, so it's somewhat of a mystery as to what Show 70 will be about. Expect a review of Tekkonkinkreet, and possibly--POSSIBLY--the second pillar of the Holy Manga Video Trinity of Suck. No guarantees though.

Review: Cream Lemon (0:00 - 32:21)
Gerald takes it upon himself to review this decades-long, massive anthology of monster-creating insanity that gave rise to Project A-Ko. Since each part of Cream Lemon is its own separate story and fits into its own genre, the decision is made to only talk about some of the better entries in the series. Somehow while discussing the finer details of it all, we end up making allusions to Firefly as well as jars containing the tears of neglected children. Also, angel's blood. And Transformers. Can't forget those.

"Review": Wicked City (32:21 - 1:23:12)
Look at the running time of that segment. You could just actually go and watch Wicked City in that amount of time, but then you run the risk of someone walking in and seeing you watching it. You can't possibly pretend you're not watching Wicked City, but with this audio review, you can act like you're listening to something respectable! In keeping with the previous review of Demon City Shinjuku, a scene by scene breakdown ensues. Normally this sort of thing would be edited down. NOT THIS TIME. Total number of FALCON PUNCH-es thrown in this anime: three.

...er, well, actually this is just the first part of the show where we don't technically talk about hentai since the recording ran extremely long. This is just the emails and news...from weeks back. WHATEVER. Now that Otaku USA deadlines have passed, JACON's behind us (here's some jerk's con report), final exams are done, we saw Iron Man, Speed Racer got watched in the theater about two or three times, and Bioshock has been beaten...I guess the subsequent parts of this podcast should come out fairly soon.
