Anime World Order Show # 74 - Special All-Manga Edition

Kept you waiting, huh? For this episode we're all reviewing manga titles. Gerald's reviewing Dororo by Osamu Tezuka and Daryl's reviewing Ressentiment by Kengo Hanazawa. Clarissa's review of Part 4 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure will be postponed. Fear not Jojo's fans, it's still going to happen, just not now.

Two hours may not be enough time to make up for the AWO deficit, but in the previous...weeks...Daryl was once again a guest star on the Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast where he talked about Drive in an attempt to restart the Big Month of Mark [Dacascos], and was a guest on the Mistakes of Youth "podcast" (there is no podcast-specific feed!) where he once again talked about Macross Frontier. Also, the original poll was about whether or not you used the BitTorrent link, but it was taken down since we can just look at the tracker statistics to see exactly how many people used it.

And before anyone asks: if you want one of the hats, we can hook you up. Also, mudkip hats. Inquire within!

Introduction (0:00 - 24:25)
Daryl for whatever reason has decided to boost the crap out of the low frequency end of his voice in an attempt to sound cool for this entire episode, but it's probably just [comically...?] distorted. Further proof that everyone he knows is becoming smarter than him by virtue of their continued educations, though perhaps "smarter" is the new "dumber." In the emails department, we get some feedback regarding our discussion from the last episode regarding the cancelation of Toonami. We then shill like it's going out of style for Hulu and its recent anime additions. Cross our hearts, we aren't on the take. The site just has all kinds of awesome things on it. At some point MTV Music gets brought up, and since Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is on the brain the inevitable ugliness of Dio in the Holy Diver video is mentioned. And do we have toy/figure/model kit collections? PERHAPS.

Let's News! (24:25 - 45:19)
With the exception of the fact that FUNimation seems to be doing better than expected, there is like, nothing but sleaze to talk about this episode. In an attempt to delay this fact, we go into what some of the top selling anime titles of the last few months have been, but it's only a matter of time before we start talking about people who want to marry fictional characters, whether or not loli/shota stuff qualifies as obscenity, and a 38 year old guy who really, REALLY hopes the answer to that question is "no" right about now.

Promo: Weeaboobies (45:19 - 46:00)
Aside from the fact that this is the WORST NAME FOR ANYTHING EVER and also that face piercings = automatic disqualification, this all-female hosted anime podcast is out there to be excessively immature so we don't have to be. But wait...we're also excessively immature. Actually, I can't really think of any truly "mature" podcasts dedicated to Japanese cartoons. I think people say that's us from a relative standpoint. That is terrifying.

Review (manga): Dororo (46:00 - 1:10:27)
Then again, maybe it's because we're reviewing the Osamu Tezuka stuff. Gerald gets into this 3-volume manga series that has been released in English courtesy of Vertical Inc, which for our money's worth is an early precursor to the "shonen" genre of anime that dominates much of the anime we consume in the US. Daryl reviewed this in the pages of Otaku USA magazine, PS buy the latest issue because it is radical kthxbye

Review (manga): Ressentiment (1:10:27 - 1:49:12)
Daryl's been making offhand references to how good this comic is for quite some time now, but it's only now that THE TRUTH can be told. Forget about Genshiken, Welcome to the NHK, Otaku no Video, and all that flippity floppity stuff: this is the real shit. Finally a tale of otakudom that tells it like it is...or at least, we think. Despite only being 4 volumes long, it's not available for sale in the US and the scanlation efforts stopped at Chapter 29. Perhaps this review will inspire Manga-Screener or someone else to FINISH THE FIGHT. We can only hope. Our salvation--or lack thereof--depends on it!

Closing (1:49:12 - 1:55:54)
Hey, you people who responded to the previous poll saying you were interested in buying AWO T-shirts and/or hoodies (as famously depicted here)? Send us emails with some contact information, desired sizes, and the like. Once we get enough people, we'll be able to put those orders in! How much would you pay for these things? We're thinking that since they need to be shipped, it might be $10 for a shirt and $20 for a hoodie once we factor in the "buy mailers and postage" cost, but who knows? Let us know. Next episode will probably be a bonus edition where we do a variety of convention reports: Anime Weekend Atlanta, SITACon, and EXPCon. Plus we should have that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4 review ready to go. Next episode proper, we're hoping to get Ryan Gavigan on as our special guest! Daryl will be talking about the original Bubblegum Crisis OAVs, Gerald will be talking about Riding Bean, and Clarissa will not be talking about Gunsmith Cats since she's going to cover Yakitate! Japan. See you hopefully sooner than it took for this one to come out. Fallout 3 doesn't play itself, you know! In the meantime, you can look at this picture of the Bureau of ATF:

Anime World Order Show # 54b - Special All-Daryl Edition...Almost

Please don't let this be your first impression of this podcast. Please? Show 54 continues with Daryl's advance review of 009-1...but due to technical difficulties and the onset of madness, Daryl decided to record the remaining segments...BY HIMSELF. As such, this is probably the single worst segment of AWO ever.

Introduction (0:00 - 21:47)
Feedback time! Dane from Anime Pacific left a comment on this very blog you're reading now regarding our bonus discussion on bootlegs. Since he lives in Hong Kong where a lot of the bootleggers are/were located, he's got some insight. First time emailer Tim wants to know about James Bond influences in anime, and Daryl deliberately avoids mentioning Licensed By Royalty even though Jonathan Klein once said over IRC to give it more than one episode. Still, he dubbed the thing, so there's no telling what tricks are up his sleeve. Future show guest Ryan Gavigan writes to let us know the connection between anime fandom and the Chicago Cubs (other than "they're full of LOSERS! HAW HAW HAW HAW!"), and a 33 year-old geezer named Jeffrey has had his interest in Japanese cartoons rekindled thanks to us. And what's the deal with these kids today, with their hair and their clothes and their rock and roll music? He wanted suggestions for space opera anime which we hadn't already mentioned in the first 30 shows, and Daryl totally flaked.

Let's News! (21:47 - 33:25)
In lieu of Gerald's presence, Daryl presents the vital anime news of the week in a calm, objective fashion while discussing their greater ramifications. A small comicbook publisher named Seven Seas Entertainment was planning on publishing a lolicon manga in the US, but it got canceled. It's been a crazy week as far as these issues go, what with the Adam Hughes statue hubbub and the quasi-porn cover to Heroes for Hire (aka a crappy comic nobody reads because it's the Marvel equivalent to Birds of Prey), and this was just the icing on the cake. Do you suppose these tiny companies that release lots of those manga-inspired comicbooks actually benefit from all the negative publicity that results when those outside of the anime/manga/comics circles find out about some of the stuff they're putting out? Did "Yaoi Press" (which, once again, does not actually release manga) benefit from all that Wal-Mart craziness? Daryl doubts that whole "no such thing as bad publicity" thing, but he already made the Don Imus reference somewhere else.

For years people have considered the feasibility of holding an anime convention for older fans, but the Providence Anime Conference (so yeah, it's not technically a "con") is the first to actually give it a shot. It's an event solely for those over the age of 21. But despite the basic outlines stated in the FAQ, will this really be different from an ordinary anime con? I mean, it's not like every single Narutard we know isn't already over 21 anyway. And even though they say it won't be awash in pornography, isn't there a very good chance that's what the dealers and artists are going to load up on? No clue. Could be awesome, could be wretched; we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out. It's not for a whole year anyway.

Promo: R5 Central (33:25 - 34:43)
Daryl has heard several episodes of R5 Central and has played several of the promos. Therefore, he was more than capable of making his very own promo for the show. Bet you can't distinguish it from the genuine article. Mike, eternally grateful, retaliates with this, the opening to the 1960s live-action 009-1:

Review: 009-1 (34:44 - 1:00:14)
For the record: Shotaro Ishi[no]mori did indeed create "Power Rangers" with the super sentai series Himitsu Sentai Goranger from 1975. Anyway. The problem with "girls with guns" of recent years is the unnecessary loli-bait, and so it is that in order to create a floating beacon of light amidst the turmoil and darkness ("fight, Corn Dog 7! Last ditch bid for freedom!"), anime has had to reach back to a manga from 40 years ago in order to restore balance to the world. The "Dave and Joel Show Notes 2.0" style shall suffice for the rest of this, since Dave's dream is to have a girl with wide hips (and therefore, mad badonkadonk) beat him up, sleep with him, and then kill him, not necessarily in that order. Sorry Dave, but as wonderful as Black Lagoon may be, Revy is sporting one of the most hideous tattoos ever conceived. Neck/shoulder/arm? That's an instant downgrade from "hot chick" to "Mike Tyson's face." Dear humanity: stop getting tattoos. They all look crappy and only make you look uglier. Daryl Surat, Arbiter of Taste, has spoken.

This review is about:

James Bond references
Headshots
Biometrics
The 1960s
Yumiko Shaku's main claim to fame is as a [photo]gravure model, which probably means that to land this voice acting gig she had to let this dude, the producer, have sex with her. Actually, that's probably how they select most voice actresses for roles.

I miss the old style Dave and Joel notes that were all pretending to be like, chat log excerpts.

Gerald: This is the worst episode of AWO ever.
Clarissa: Yeah, until next week.

Anime World Order Show # 50 - Watch Everything We Talk About This Week, Okay?

It's our glorious 50th episode! Gerald reviews Megazone 23 Part 1, Clarissa's got Princess Tutu, and Daryl rambles about Macross: Do You Remember Love? for nearly an hour. Judge for yourselves whether we condone bootlegging/are as bad as Coultergeist.

The loudness levels might be a little weird this episode, but hopefully the clipping is minimal. With any luck, everything is still intelligible.

Introduction/News/Contest Announcement (0:00 - 41:03)
Reintroductions are in order, even though we aren't exactly in order ourselves. In the emails, the emails, what what, the emails: we get more speculation regarding why anime companies don't publicize much in the way of numbers, respond to allegations of spreading hate speech, reveal the truth about THE TRUTH, and try to find out whether we have any favorite anime genres or not. We don't have any news really, but Patrick Macias (as seen on television) aka MD Patrick has been named Editor-in-Chief of the upcoming print magazine Otaku USA. The first issue comes out in June, but we have a SHOCKING REVELATION about the content of this publication that you can find out by listening right now!

On the subject of conventions, we were asked to mention this before April 1st, and because we doubt that the next episode will be out before then, so we'll mention it here. On Sunday April 1st from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Zenkaikon is holding a nerd prom! Yep, it's their Spring Formal and it'll be held at the Valley Forge Scanticon in King of Prussia, PA (that's where the Otaku Generation podcast guys are based out of). Actually, it's semi-formal, but there is going to be a King and Queen voted on and chosen by attendees, and nothing says King Of Nerd Prom better than winning Best Buy gift cards. Like all nerd proms, it does cost money to attend, and while registration closes in five days, there's special pricing for AWO listeners. And by "listeners" I mean "readers": $23.00 flat for the formal (even if they're not attending the convention itself in October). $33.00 to combine the formal and registration. Mention us by name and get $1.00 off admission! Think of it this way: you'll be getting access to a full Asian buffet including dessert!

Oh yeah. If you've got a con or event or something you want us to promote on the air (like how we didn't just do), let us know and we'll work something out. Also, if you're reading this and you buy things from Right Stuf, write in "Anime World Order Podcast" in the "how did you hear about this site" field since they seem to think we actively encourage bootlegging. If enough people do that, it'll be a good joke. Still, it gives us a contest idea. Listen to the show and find out what it is!

MIKE TOOLE'S SEXY MAN-VOICE (41:03 - 42:40)
We're probably too lazy to give timecodes for the voicemails, but since Mike Toole's sexy voice out-sexies them all, we figured you'd want to know about it. If you couldn't get enough after hearing his rendition of the Moon Phase theme song, he's got more vocal stylings in store for you here.

Review: Megazone 23 Part 1 (42:40 - 1:02:22)
Yes, it's pronounced "two three" and not "twenty three." Just ask someone who legally changed their name to Megazone that I think listens to this show even though he's never written in. This is a really important feature-length OAV as far as American anime fandom is concerned, as it served as a "gateway anime" for many people even though you don't usually hear it mentioned much anymore. Gerald invokes the statute of limitations regarding spoilers on this one, but this one was always more about the SUPER DUPER 1980s-ness of everything than the plot itself so don't let that stop you from listening.

Promo: The Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast (1:02:22 - 1:02:53)
Paul Chapman is a resentful shell of a man on the grounds that his movie ideas are completely wrong roughly 1/3 to 2/3 of the time and he does not have a sexy voice. Also, his mom gets all the fan mail. But just so everyone listening knows, that was his weak arm.

Review: Princess Tutu (1:02:53 - 1:25:35)
Aaron from WARP calls in to mention how much better Clarissa sounds now with the new microphone, but perhaps the fact that Daryl not only uses the Levelator but also the Audacity beta Leveler tool on top of that since he forgets that he used the Levelator invalidates any such improvements. This one's a semi-recent magical girl that's an awful lot like Revolutionary Girl Utena in many aspects, but unlike Utena this totally didn't catch on in the US despite positive reviews, and that's a shame. We speculate as to why that might have been the case, though perhaps the split reactions among us with regards to this show sums it all up.

Nothing Remotely Resembling a Coherent Review: Superdimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (1:25:35 - 2:09:22)
Megazone 23 Part 1 may best encompass the 80s look, but this movie, which incidentally featured much of the same staff, best encompasses the 80s anime spirit. Daryl knew full well that he could never put together a proper review of this, since the Egan Loos of the world that know the exact missile capacities of the fighters would have his head, so he opts not to have done any research or taken any notes before speaking. The result is a segment that by itself is the length of most typical podcasts. Normally we don't bother with this approach, but this is Show # 50 and, more importantly, this is DYRL we're talking about here. Since this movie will not be seeing a US release any time soon, here is a BitTorrent link.

Otaku may not necessarily remember love, but at least we can remember that once upon a time, we weren't all dead inside. Listen and perhaps you'll find out why.

Closing (2:09:22 - 2:16:01)
Next time, Daryl's going to try and do some more things he's weeks/months late in doing by discussing Megacon 2007 and also reviewing To Terra Volume 1, released by Vertical Inc. In addition to that, Clarissa's reviewing Animation Runner Kuromi and Gerald's reviewing The Venus Wars. Our sidebar has all those podcast directories as well as our contact information in the event you're interested in that stuff.

Anime World Order Show # 35 - Cromartie, Lain, and THE TRUTH behind Metrocon 2006

No time for a final quality check listen, we've got to drive to Anime Weekend Atlanta! Gerald reviews Cromartie High School, Clarissa continues the ABe kick from last week with Serial Experiments Lain, and Daryl unveils a small portion of THE TRUTH he discovered at Metrocon 2006!

Introduction (0:00 - 41:25)
The Garbage Stanley captured in this recording is actually not the current Garbage Stanley. More on that later. In the ever-growing listener mailbox, we're told that Baltimore isn't as bad as we think it is, but we remain skeptical since we watched not only Homicide: Life on the Street, but also The Wire aka "a step by step tutorial on how to be a criminal and not get caught by the police." Then, Paul S. writes in with some proposals about how to combat anime piracy, which means we end up yelling for 20 minutes. Finally, Alex requests recommendations on what anime he should show to people to get them interested in anime, and we each give our thoughts.

Promo: Ninja Consultant (41:25 - 43:10)
Erin and Noah shared a room with Gerald and Clarissa over the weekend, and according to Erin's testimony, the amount of dirty group intercourse that took place was less than 1%. However, she fell quite ill during the weekend and had to get an emergency pierrotectomy, so perhaps her words cannot be trusted.

Review: Cromartie High School (43:10 - 1:02:56)
Finally, the time has come to answer the burning question! Which is the greater force: the comedy level of Cromartie or the Aryan humor deficiency which flows through the fiber of Gerald's being? There's only one way to find out!

Promo: Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast (1:02:56 - 1:03:42)
Multiple episodes of Paul Chapman's podcast are what we listened to for a good portion of the drive up to Atlanta. Gerald and Clarissa would like to suggest that instead of using only the stock sound effects, he should also have audio clips from the movies thrown in too. Daryl thinks having his mom be on the podcast is a stroke of genius, but Gerald dismisses the opinions of all people who hold PhDs and Clarissa dismisses the opinions of anyone who would state that Halle Berry was the best Catwoman.

Review: Serial Experiments Lain (1:03:42 - 1:26:29)
Clarissa keeps the Yoshitoshi ABe ball rolling by talking about the show that pretty much put him on the map. Logic dictated that Gerald would have to then review Texhnolyze, but he refused so the ABe motif has officially died after a mere two weeks.

Promo: Fast Karate For the Gentleman (1:26:29 - 1:27:34)
In a city ruled by the mob, Dave and Joel have no choice but to fend for themselves, with only their toes and fingers at their disposal. But rather than use those fingers to form a fist, they use them instead to watch anime that is either awesome or awful. But mostly awful. This is why Daryl steals jokes from them constantly, and his next bad anime panel will feature dub clips from Megazone 23 Part 3.

THE TRUTH: Metrocon 2006 (1:27:34 - 1:46:03)
"That had to be the dumbest and most annoying segment I've ever listened to...in fact I didn't listen to most of it." -- the most positive praise we've received thus far regarding this segment

With Amano's World coming up in a few weeks, Daryl thought it wise to actually get the Metrocon segment out. Of course, seeing that this entire segment is a fabrication and doesn't accurately portray much of what took place at Metrocon, the likelihood of his getting a press badge for that might be low, especially since they listen to this podcast! Whatever, it's for the sake of jokes.

Closing (1:46:03 - 1:48:39)
Next time on AWO, which really should have come out by now except Daryl spent the last two days not editing anything, Daryl will review the 2004 remake of Hi no Tori, Clarissa gives us another yaoi title review with Embracing Love, and Gerald reviews Manga Video's re-release of Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro. Or, as the packaging reads "Lupin the III." That's like writing "$10 dollars," people!

Anime World Order Show # 28 - Fantastic Child Thoughtbird OF TRUTH: The Movie

In an attempt to more accurately reflect what this podcast is SUPPOSED to be, Gerald reviews the new(ish) anime Fantastic Children, Clarissa reviews the not-so-surprisingly forgotten A Wind Named Amnesia, and Daryl's search for THE TRUTH at anime conventions continues with Part 2 of The Japanese Animation Convention is Decadent and Depraved!

Introduction (00:00 - 27:55)
We play some voicemails that are are reactions to the GeekNights voicemail from last week: SimHuman's got issues with live action vs animated porn and has a super idea regarding segregating cosplayers from the rest of the convention, then Jeff Tatarek shares with us his long experience with cosplay and AMVs. Not content to stop there, Jeff dons his Zecter to defeat the Maharaja Mack Daddy once and for all, undoubtedly to prepare him for his second guest appearance on the Otaku Generation podcast. Chad Clayton also writes in regarding whether or not Project A-Ko was obviously a comedy given that there are people in this world who don't realize Commando is a real-time documentary, which somehow results in us discussing the state of comedy in anime overall. Finally, we talk about why the Japanese haven't updated their distribution system, even though we don't have any qualifications to answer such a question. Then again we don't have the qualifications to answer any questions.

  • Mangacast - this man is a MACHINE because of the number of episodes this guy is up to, but unfortunately there's no way to navigate through them
Let's News! (27:56 - 35:40)
We take a look at a supremely bad business plan involving several Japanese companies releasing manga from the 1920's and also some of the first work of some of the manga greats like Leiji Matsumoto. The Director of CMX also reveals why they took the only good thing about Tenjou Tenge out of it. We also discuss the top ten list of what ICv2 considers the most powerful people in the American anime industry. Daryl would like to semi-retract the statement he made regarding Diamond owning ICv2, as he can find no concrete evidence of this being the case despite there being very strong ties. Sort of like Dick Cheney and Halliburton. We also discuss the entry of Illumitoon into the anime distribution marketplace. Clearly, CPM having money problems wasn't a hint that the market was oversaturated!

Overlooked Anime: A Wind Named Amnesia (35:41 - 52:59)
Clarissa takes a look an a the sadly overlooked 1990 movie A Wind Named Amnesia. This is what happens when thoughtbird gets too greedy. Find out the secret hidden connections between this, Galaxy Express 999 and the not-in-real-time documentary Johnny Mnemonic!

Review: Fantastic Children (53:00 - 1:07:12)
Gerald tries to actually catch up with what everyone else out there is watching by reviewing a show that was released two years ago. Unfortunately, despite NOTHING but positive reviews online and no one daring to say anything negative about the show, Gerald is unable to find much to like about it (well at least the first 10 episodes). This probably comes from the vast amount of scenes of people looking at something and being TERRIFIED before everything fades to black, which annoys him when it's done over five times per episode.

THE TRUTH about anime fandom: The Japanese Animation Convention is Decadent and Depraved, Part 2 (1:06:14 - 1:29:40)
Daryl's ongoing journey to bridge the divide between modern anime fandom and himself for the sake of his own salvation continues now, with Part Two of this special wannabe gonzo tell-all. Part 1 is here in Show 23.

Closing (1:29:40 - 1:33:39)
Can it be that some of the things we say actually result in people watching the stuff we'd be talking about? Better mention how Animeigo is selling Crusher Joe for like $6 with free shipping, plus their other stuff is going for awfully cheap too! The box your orders will ship in look like they were personally stomped upon by Robert Woodhead himself, but the contents should still be fine. Next time, it's Daryl's turn to watch something recent--and by his standards that means "from only a few years back"--so he's going to watch the 13 episode series, Natsuhiko Kyogoku's Requiem From the Darkness. Now that the series is over, Clarissa is going to acquiesce the demands of the masses and review something that actually IS recent, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Finally, Gerald is going to review one of his favorite anime, Gall Force.

Anime World Order Show # 23 - Decadence, Depravity, and Disasters

The popular podcasts release their shows on time and foster communities out of their listeners. We are capable of neither of these things. The theme of this episode was "disasters," and that's what befell us all. Gerald was going to review Spriggan but couldn't find the words, Clarissa reviews the "gay porn only without the porn" title My Sexual Harassment (and eventually found the words), and Daryl's ongoing search for THE TRUTH leads him to the simple, startling, and plagiarized revelation that The Japanese Animation Convention is Decadent and Depraved.

Once again we're late releasing this thing AND it's 3 AM (er, 3:45 AM now that I'm done writing the basic outline for these notes). After nearly half a year now, we STILL have not gotten any faster or better at doing the editing on these things. Perhaps now is the time to start begging people to donate mixer boards and audio hardware stuff to us or something.

Introduction (0:00 - 26:39)
We start things off by responding to listener feedback. What anime should you show to your girlfriend? Why, who better to ask than a bunch of people that have never had one! Who are the lamest character designers in anime? How do we even FIND all this stuff we review? And why the heck don't we take a cue from the GOOD podcasts and set up some forums, an IRC channel, or ANYTHING that'd help build a community, anyway?!

Let's News! (26:39 - 32:50)
A bunch of anime titles supposedly have live-action versions being made of them. WHY did we bother to report on this, again? Plus, there's a place called Moe Burger now. We all demanded that Matt Alt and Patrick Macias head over to that vile place immediately to get pictures, but since this episode is so late, they actually did it already.
Was Going to Be Reviewed But Wasn't: Spriggan (32:50 - 33:35)
Gerald tried to convince us all that Spriggan absolutely sucked, but couldn't quite formulate a proper means of conveying that message. After days of trying to fix it all through re-recordings and editing, he gave up on it so that the rest of this episode could actually be released. We'd rather release nothing at all than something not up to our standards, minimal though they may be. Will Spriggan be reviewed in the future? Time will tell.

Promo: R5 Central (33:35 - 34:19)
You know what I just learned from listening to Otaku Generation this week? That that female robot filter effect Mike does in all his promos and episodes is supposed to be his sarcastic female AI cohost! You know, like how the villains in Bibleman all have that sarcastic female AI sidekick with the New Yawk/Joisey accent to gently remind the good children viewing the Trinity Broadcasting Network that people from 'round those parts are evil? All this time, I just thought he was doing it to be ridiculous, like when Wesley Willis would do it, but it's actually an homage to the Full Armor of God. Never leave home without it. Sure, there's OTHER tokusatsu shows out there with that type of character, but I KNOW this is what he was going for. Anime Central's been over for about two months now, and by the rate it takes us to get OUR con reports done, I'd say R5 Central's right on schedule.

Review: My Sexual Harassment (34:19 - 48:24)
According to our feed statistics, the least downloaded episode of all our shows is Show # 4 in which, among other things, Clarissa reviewed the yaoi title Sensitive Pornograph. Common sense would dictate that we shouldn't review any more of this stuff since nobody cares, but we'd rather just ignore that and review whatever we feel like. Thus, Clarissa EXPLAINS IT ALL, (HAW HAW HAW HAW) by reviewing the CORNIEST (HAW HAW HAW HAW) gay anime porn title of them all!

Promo: Chibi-Tokyo (48:24 - 49:00)
Sure, Daryl made fun of uh...that one guy for spending an hour talking somewhat incoherently about Fist of the North Star for over an hour while drunk, getting various minutia wrong in the process, but that's STILL more Fist of the North Star talk than you'll see on other podcasts outside of Fast Karate for the Gentleman and (I guess) R5 Central! So check these guys out. This promo is a Quinn/Martin Production. Also, Eli Nouguez will die just as he lived: alone and unloved, with tears in his eyes brought about by the sores growing within his urethra preventing him from beating off to his Waita Uziga collection without experiencing incredible pain.

THE TRUTH: The Japanese Animation Convention is Decadent and Depraved, Part 1 (49:00 - 1:02:45)
Daryl Surat has noticed how all the other anime podcasts refuse to reveal THE TRUTH about anime conventions, and that's been especially so as of late. Here's what all the OTHER podcasters and websites don't want you to know: anime conventions are a den of sin overrun by people whose interest in anime is but tangential or secondary to another, more primary interest, usually some freaky kink. The word has spread about anime cons being "safe" territory to practice one's deviancies without fear of retribution, and this is the result. In the first part of yet another SHOCKING and COMPLETELY NOT DISHONEST look at anime conventions in the light of the Katsucon and Megacon reports of shows past, Daryl once again does what those OTHER convention reporters don't have the BALLS to do, and that's flat-out lie, deceptively edit, and plagiarize for the sake of proving his pre-conceived conclusions. Just like the real news you see on TV!
Closing (1:02:45 - 1:04:36)
This episode is about the length we originally envisioned the podcast as being (as evidenced in our early episodes) by virtue of not having Gerald's segment. Perhaps we should put up that video of Daryl stabbing him to compensate. Next time, to make up for this week, Gerald will review Crusher Joe. Alas, it won't be the "I'm the leader of this team, 'CAUSE I'M THE WHINIEST!" version. Clarissa will review another "pretty boys in armor," show named Yoroiden Samurai Troopers better known to anime fans in the US as Ronin Warriors, and Daryl will discuss the Often Overlooked (except in previous episodes of this podcast) fan favorite of decades past, Prefectural Earth Defense Force. Well, provided he rewatches it first. He was supposed to do that today, but got caught up in...editing this.

Anime World Order Show # 17 - The Search for THE TRUTH Returns

We skipped a week because of Jacon, but we're still lazy! As compensation for this relatively segment-light episode, we present to you the long-awaited next part of Daryl's search for THE TRUTH. This time, at Megacon.

Introduction That's Actually The Majority of the Show
We offer the lame excuse of having to devote all our free time to preparing for finals and anime convention panels, thus leaving us without time to put together proper segments. Fortunately, responding to listener feedback requires no preparation at all! We'll just try and mask the lack of preparation by listing each email topic:

  • Keith from Teleport City writes us to defend the honor of Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight. He ain't joking around, folks. (5:10 - 9:40)
  • Jenna from the UK writes us to ask our opinions on CLAMP, Fruits Basket, and what she should watch next given that she likes both. We completely forget to answer that last one. Whoops! (9:40 - 22:20)
  • Shane, a self-described World War 2 buff, writes approvingly about Zipang and enlightens us on the relationship between Japan and the Nazis! Somehow we end up mentioning Gunslinger Girl. (22:20 - 25:30)
  • Daniel opens up a can of worms by asking us what our favorite anime songs are. SEARCHING FOR ODIN, MY LOVE! (25:30 - 38:00)
  • "Spanish Discipline Guy" Alfonso asks us about the feasibility of showing Crayon Shin-Chan on US TV, and requests that everyone go to Youtube and do a Crayon Shin-Chan search to see the clips he's talking about. (38:00 - 41:15)
  • Jason wonders how much hentai dub actors get paid and what we think about "slice of life" shows, offering Piano and Koi Kaze as examples. This leads to us trying to figure out whether "slice of life" is really just a sugarcoated term for "nothing happens to advance anything." (41:15 - 48:50)
  • Kori insists that she is not a girl. Wait, I just said "she." He wants to know what we think about A.I. Love You, so we tell him what we think about Ken Akamatsu and harem anime in general after reading the Wikipedia entry for A.I. Love You. Somehow hentai discussion gets thrown into the mix. (48:50 - 56:55)

Let's News! (56:55 - 1:13:39)
King of Braves GaoGaiGar, which we talked about in Show # 3, has been licensed by Media Blasters. Trinity Blood is getting released in theaters by Funimation, but Trinity Blood fails at being entertaining and if you like it you're dumb, so don't bother watching it. 4Kids has created new brands allowing them to butcher even more shows, and Super Robot Taisen Original Generations is announced for the PS2 in Japan. If the English versions of the GBA games sell well, then there's a good chance of this being released in America. Plus, for all you fans of dudes being rude, Animate has apparently acquired all of the Biblos catalog.

The Search for THE TRUTH: Megacon 2006 (1:13:39 - 1:27:28)
It's late by about three months, but Daryl's COMPLETELY NOT FILLED WITH LIES AND DECEIT journey to bridge the gap between himself and modern anime fans continues, bringing him to the science fiction convention known as Megacon, an event highly attended because it always happens at the same time as a national cheerleader conference located down the hall. But now isn't the time to get interviews with the guy dressed as Darth Vader posing with the Spirit Squad, since conventions are SERIOUS BUSINESS. Will THE TRUTH be discovered once and for all?

Closing (1:27:28 - 1:33:10)
Next week is our Jacon report episode. All three of us were there with press credentials and there is something like 13 hours worth of recorded material and 2 gigs of photos and video to parse through. We will probably end up using very little of it, but better to have too much than too little. Will we be joined by staffers from the con? It is a mystery! We close things off with the help of Jeff "Rich Lather" Tatarek and his time machine, which he used to travel back to the 1980s so that Look Around You's very own Synthesizer Patel could do a Discipline reading for us. The Maharaja Mack Daddy ain't got jack on the S to the P, son.

Anime World Order Show # 11 - Death Note, Zipang, and the Unlabored Flawlessness OF TRUTH

We're testing to see if recording in mono sounds better or worse. PLEASE let us know if it sounds bad. This week we read lots of email, Gerald conveys his thoughts on Zipang, Clarissa finally reviews Death Note, and Daryl's search for THE TRUTH continues!

Introduction (0:00 - 32:08)
Hey, we got mentioned on Ain't It Cool News! We love to read your email and play your voice mail messages, and it shows since we spend more and more time doing it each week. Among many other things, we talk about some of our favorite opening credits sequences, dubs vs subs (AAARGH), how Daryl's giving gekiga a bad rap, and THE SECRET BEHIND DOG SOLDIER!

Let's News! (32:08 - 40:53)
Just as Daryl predicted, Wallace and Gromit won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Plus, we're not generally ones to mention videogame news, but Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 and 2 are coming out for the Gameboy Advance! Too bad they're the Original Generation games (which means there's no pre-established anime characters in them), but the gameplay, animations, storyline, etc are still top-rate, so place your preorders now lest you not get a copy once it goes out of print within a week after coming out! Last but not least, Dark Horse Comics has put up a 2002 interview with Kazuo Koike, and they talk about AIUEO Boy aka The Starving Man! If you connect the dots, read between the lines, and believe hard enough, we'll be getting The Starving Man in English in no time!

Promo: Weekly Anime Review podcast (40:54 - 41:27)
A pretty sizeable amount of people get to the AWO webpage via the Weekly Anime Review site, and with any luck, the opposite is true as well.

Often Overlooked: Zipang (40:53 - 55:08)
Proof positive that "Often Overlooked" does not necessarily imply "oldschool," Gerald talks about this military science fiction series from about two years ago which seemed to slip under the radars of many people. And it's not like you can use the "well, that's what submarines are supposed to do" excuse like in Silent Service, either! Listen and find out what you're missing.
  • ANN entry for Zipang
  • There would have been a link about Eagle here but it's not on Viz's site anymore, WTF man do you guys hate America or something

Review (manga): Death Note (55:08 - 1:13:08)
People weren't too keen on the decision to omit the 20 minutes of Clarissa talking about Death Note from last week's episode, so we've moved it here instead. Actually, we should have just pasted in what we'd already recorded, but instead we just talked about it again. This one's pretty massively popular with the fangirls due to the artwork, but don't let that scare you off guys. After all, this is a Shonen Jump property with a fair share of well, death. And notes.

And the POUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNCE.

PERIOD.

Promo: Happy House of Hentai (link not safe for work) podcast (1:13:08 - 1:13:30)
It's a podcast entirely about hentai. Except it's also got reviews of regular porn. And stuff about Hello Kitty that has nothing to do with hentai or porn. Someone's got a Swiftboating coming their way.

The Search for THE TRUTH: Katsucon 12, Part 2 (1:13:30 - 1:24:05)
Daryl's journey to discover THE TRUTH continues from where it left off last week. Following his unprepared exposure to the Source, he chooses instead to focus on the proliferation of the Unlabored Flawlessness at anime conventions in recent months. There are so many more TRUTH worthy pictures, but many of them don't have corresponding interviews. There's no telling what will be done with them at this point.

Closing (1:24:05 - 1:26:43)
We've gotten repeated emails from Megacon attendees that were bearers of THE TRUTH requesting their interview segments be played, but alas the Megacon segment will have to be put off a week. But fret thee not, for next week Gerald and Clarissa will both be reviewing Naoki Urasawa's Monster. It would have happened sooner except they wanted to watch through most all of it first. Then Daryl informed them that they couldn't talk about more than the first few episodes anyway without totally spoiling it, so here we are. Balance is key, and since Gerald and Clarissa are reviewing something as good as Monster, Daryl reaches into the "worst anime titles ever made" vault and review the Often Overlooked (with good reason) anime film...

ODIN: PHOTON SPACE SAILER [sic] STARLIGHT.

Consider yourselves warned. And since he DEMANDED to be present for the Odin love-fest, our guest will be Mike Toole, aka The Guy Who Read the Discipline Ad Copy in Show 10 (send in MORE recordings, people!). Oh, and he also runs Anime Jump which is an anime review site that all the cool people read and post on.

Anime World Order Show # 10 - The search for THE TRUTH begins

Fine, so we're late this week. In our letters section we talk about anime fans outside of the US, then Gerald discusses the Often Overlooked Lensman (the DUB), Clarissa reviews the manga Homunculus, and Daryl's search for THE TRUTH kicks off with Part 1 of his Katsucon experience. If you don't normally read the show notes, now is the time to start.

Introduction (0:00 - 33:52)
We've got a Frappr map now, so be sure to go there and leave your comments while also voting on who is the best. Daryl was hoping that the votes would be even with him and Clarissa each having 50% and Gerald having 0%, but that's not how things ended up. Listener email clarifies us on matters we didn't quite get correct about Naruto and Serial Experiments Lain, then we get a brief idea of what it's like being an anime fan outside of America as well as a possible reason for why US fans don't seem to care about older anime titles the way the Japanese fans do. Plus, the differences between the Gravitation manga and anime and much more! SEND IN MORE READINGS OF THE DISCIPLINE AD COPY, DAMN YOU!

Often Overlooked: Lensman (the DUB!) (33:52 - 49:13)
Gerald waxes poetic over this out-of-print 1980s anime adaptation of E.E. "Doc" Smith's genre-defining science fiction tale. Find out the secret connection between this, Clarissa, and Ninja Scroll!

Review (manga): Homunculus (49:13 - 1:02:28)
Clarissa brings us this overview of yet another masterpiece by Hideo Yamamoto, author of Ichi the Killer, among other things. This title is about this guy who's a lot like this person who's a friend of Daryl's. We'd have him on the show except for the fact that he's too much like the main character in this manga. Don't let the name fool you: the Ultimate Eye isn't quite the same thing here.

The Search for THE TRUTH -- Katsucon 12, Part 1 (1:02:28 - 1:18:03)
Daryl embarks on his quest to save his soul and somehow escape the fate which he has been struggling so hard to overcome to no avail. He's going to do this by finding the most Internet-worthy of anime convention attendees, then interviewing them and posting pictures of them, all the while impersonating a radio news correspondent. Man, it's no wonder Rob Landtz voted for Clarissa over him on the Frappr map even after having met him!

Closing (1:18:03 - 1:20:05)
Something tells us that we aren't going to adhere to this next episode preview much, but Clarissa promises a review of Gravitation, Gerald will talk about the Often Overlooked fansub title Zipang, and Daryl's search for THE TRUTH at Katsucon will continue, just as soon as he reconstitutes his sanity and composure by rereading Volume 1 of Crying Freeman by Kazuo Koike, available now in unflipped format from Dark Horse Comics! Go and buy it now along with Cromartie High School Volume 5!

Anime World Order Show # 9 - Golgo 13: He Shoots, He Scores

We're back to the "regular" show format. Daryl talks about the Often Overlooked gekiga mainstay Golgo 13 and gets made fun of by shut from 4chan, Gerald reviews Cannon God Exaxxion, and we offer a sample of the upcoming Katsucon and Megacon interview segments.

Introduction (0:00 - 23:01)
Listener email reveals that we were totally wrong about Transformers last week, among other things. Per your requests, we give our thoughts on G Gundam, Lensman (the DUB!), Harmagedon (the DUB...ABSOLUTE ZERO [NOW]!), Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Plus, Daryl reveals THE SHOCKING HIDDEN TRUTH behind Gravitation and how none of us can pronounce "yaoi" right! It must be because Daryl has the Ultimate Eye.

Let's News! (23:01 - 29:50)
As proof of how untimely podcasts are for getting news, we get around to mentioning how the hentai title Discipline got a DVD release that's as comedically entertaining as its ad copy, ADV licenses the original Area 88 OAVs (as discussed in Show #4), and Daryl uses the Ultimate Eye to deduce that the odd handling of Prefectural Earth Defense Force is all just another manufactured controversy designed to get the crazed otaku--that's us, by the way--angry in an attempt to raise awareness of the title, just like Ghost Stories was (as discussed in Show # 1). And if you want to be on the show, we give you the chance to show us how good a voice actor you are! Listen to find out how!

Often Overlooked: The Professional: Golgo 13 (29:50 - 50:53)
Daryl pulls your triggers lovingly and softly using the pulsating holster OF LOVE as he regales us all with the history of one of the most enduring characters in gekiga ("dramatic comics"), Golgo 13 "the man with the custom M-16," created by Takao Saito. This was supposed to just be about the theatrical animated feature, but ends up being about how Golgo 13 truly is the Japanese equivalent of a Jack Chick tract.

  • Official website of Jack Chick (includes Japanese editions, so help us)
  • Toastyfrog's Golgo 13: Perfect Machine of Snipe -- Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 (writeups on the out-of-print Saito Productions English releases of Golgo 13, including pictures; hurry before it's taken down like how "Chuchu Died For Your Sins" isn't there anymore)
  • Duke Togo: A Retrospective of the Localized Golgo 13 in America -- Part 1, Part 2 (excellent article which is so near identical to what Daryl said that it's not even funny; Daryl would like everyone to know that he never heard of this site or Toastyfrog's writeup until it was time to do these show notes and that he didn't plagiarize from either)
  • Scans Gerald made from the first story in the Viz release -- 1 2 3 4 (he notes the art is better in the second story)

Special Bonus Feedback: shut from 4chan Respects Daryl Highly (50:53 - 56:06)
We forgot to read this message in the beginning since it wasn't sent directly to us, but FYAD All Star and 4chan sensation shut exposes us for the snob elite indy band hipsterites we are. We hem and haw in an attempt to justify our existences, failing miserably but learning a valuable lesson in the process. We bet this is all because Daryl still can't find where he put that AMV CDR that W.T. Snacks gave him two years ago.

Review (manga): Cannon God Exaxxion (56:06 - 1:08:11)
Gerald tells us all about Kenichi Sonoda's current manga series being published in America by Dark Horse that nobody else seems to really be talking about. I guess that's why we're talking about it, though Daryl and Clarissa aren't quite sure what makes this one NOT as utterly generic as it sounds, since the plot is "guy is surrounded by harem of women and pilots robot against aliens." Listen and judge for yourself.

Special Bonus #2: Katsucon Report Preview (1:08:11 - 1:20:48)
Man, this episode is going to be like an hour and a half long because of this, and we just got an email saying "stop making the episodes over 80 minutes for the sake of the people who burn them as CD audio), but as a preview for the upcoming weeks, Daryl has decided to share with everyone one of the HOURS AND HOURS of interviews he conducted while he was off at Katsucon 12 in search of the hidden secrets of the universe, and by that he means interviewing people he deemed "worthy of the Internet." This one interview went like 10 minutes; for next week, Daryl will have to figure out if he can somehow fit in all the high points within about 15 minutes or so. And on top of that, he did interviews at Megacon this past weekend as well. Don't worry, those are forthcoming too.

Closing (1:20:48 - 1:22:58)
Somehow, the shows keep getting longer and longer despite Daryl's feeble attempts to keep things at about an hour's length. We've heard plenty of people saying that the length isn't an issue, but be honest: if you think the show is too long (or if you start listening to episodes but stop before they're done), we want to hear from you too! Next time, Clarissa reviews the manga Homunculus (though she is not certain whether or not it contains the Ultimate Eye), Gerald talks about a favorite of his, the Often Overlooked Lensman (the DUB), and Daryl kicks off his quest for THE TRUTH and THE AMERICAN DREAM (no, not Ron Killings and Dusty Rhodes) as he interviews YOU, the anime convention-attending populace at large! Be ready for lots more pictures of really cool people! ABSOLUTE ZERO, NOW!
