Hey kids, remember this podcast? Yeah, neither do we. But here's our recorded some time ago convention report for Anime Weekend Atlanta 2009! Our special guests are a bunch of crazy people we know, many of whom sleep in Gerald's quarters EVERY NIGHT. Just be warned: the audio and editing quality on this one is...kind of rough.
By all rights, there should be several pictures, videos, and links in these show notes. However, I do not have any of them because they're locked away in the vaults. It's been entirely too long since we've done any con reports. In fact, we owe about a year's worth. But here's our report for Otakon 2009 while it's still fresh in our minds. Warning: in order to release this "on time," we opted to more or less release the audio unedited. It's rougher than we'd like.
For our final podcast of the year, we celebrate our third year anniversary with our special guest, Ryan Gavigan! Took us long enough; we'd been meaning to record this since before our first year anniversary. In the first part of this show, we talk to Ryan about his sordid life in anime fandom and Daryl reviews the Bubblegum Crisis OAVs, aka "the only Bubblegum Crisis that exists" or if you prefer "the REAL Bubblegum Crisis."

For our three year anniversary, we figured we'd record an actual show proper with everyone together for the very first time instead of just a bonus. Nearly all podcasts do this, but not us! That's why we didn't know to position the microphones in such a way as to prevent echoing induced from multiple mics recording the same sounds. Oh well. So who is this Ryan Gavigan, anyway? Daley Wong and Leon McNichol, the two longest-living members of the AD Police. Daley, if you couldn't tell, is a flamboyant homosexual of the type and variety never to be respected by the Iron Shiek. All Leon ever does right is take his shades off, put his shades on, say stupid things, and occasionally shoot someone. So THAT'S where CSI: Miami came from.YEAHHHHHH!
This is Priss in her concert gear. You might have to squint to notice it, but she looks KINDA like Pris from Blade Runner!
But despite the haircut, she is not "the gay," as that ugly freckleface girl from Transporter 3 would say. Otherwise, she'd be enjoying this more.
If she was, there'd be scenes of her doing this sort of thing. BGC is not exactly a subtle series. So stop contemplating whether Sylia is a boomer. (PS: Deckard = NOT A REPLICANT, NO MATTER WHAT)

Sylia Stingray, by contrast, complies with the laws of physics. This is the law of buoyancy. Though I guess buoyancy isn't a law so much as a force. Fuck it.

But if you're thinking of cosplaying it, know that there are downsides. MORE LIKE BACKSIDES, AMIRITE
Vision's character designer was Satoshi Urushihara. The breasts on his female characters are always that shiny because he uses his many, many love dolls as reference. Gerald only has one inflatable anime girl love doll for the moment.
Nene is the worst character, so naturally the Japanese gave her an entire episode. Nothing "proto"-moe about it!
Largo however, is the best character other than Sylia. That Hiroaki Gouda (No. Edam? No.) probably designed him is a true oddity, as he directed the Nene episode then spent the rest of his life directing all the Ah My Goddess! anime.
Maybe Masami Obari might have designed Largo. If Masami Obari is involved and it does not involve either Largo or Terry Bogard, then I'm probably not interested.Obari-tan wants us all to know: this person is DEFINITELY Australian.
As a rule, it is pointless to bother doing high-definition remasterings for most non-theatrical anime made prior to the onset of HD. However, certain bits of hilarious English/Engrish text become more easily noticeable here. WHAT'S THAT BETWEEN THOSE BOOKS NENE, HUH? This must be the REAL reason PT Chapman loves you so. PS: Mackie is "the character we, the viewer, would actually be." Dwell on THAT.
Oh yeah, there's mecha in this series, which is why it's awesome. Sylia is the leader!

This is the part Sonoda was responsible for; the mechanical designs of the hardsuits. Also, the little girl in the first episode FO' SHO'. Note the presence of the high heels which make this awesome and EMPOWERING and why Japanese animation is mature advanced sci-fi storytelling with STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS blah blah blahThis is clearly the Shinji Aramaki part. Because it's AWESOME.
Motorcycles that transform into robots...AND THEY CAN FLY? If they can fly, why even HAVE motorcycles? Only Shinji Aramaki truly knows.This is what happens to most members of the AD Police that are not in helicopters. (If they're in helicopters, they get immolated due to the freaking chopper exploding. Holy CRAP.) Note that this guy lost his hands before losing his arms, and that head comes off about a second after this screenshot was taken.
See? You should go watch this cartoon. Again, if need be.
We were hoping to have at least part of Show 75 out by now, but this probably marks our three year anniversary of podcasting instead. Kind of fitting, really. Pictures forthcoming.

This would have been funnier if the people in the outfits weren't so keen on wandering into large events and then leaving in a manner that illustrated they didn't actually care about what was going on in the room. They did spend most of their time in the halls, though. McCain's campaign headquarters was a few minutes away, but they were closed! HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO CONVINCE INUYASHA TO VOTE MCCAIN IF YOUR "VICTORY CENTER" IS CLOSED ON WEEKENDS?! No wonder he lost.

Featuring Dave Riley from Fast Karate for the Gentleman, and Mike Toole as the Voice of God. Recorded Saturday night from about 1 AM to 4 AM WHILE COMPLETELY SOBER. Except for those Irish anime podcasters. You can't keep them away from the bottle.
While I'm not going to disable comments for this post, I am going to say that you should probably leave comments there instead of here. You can leave comments here too if you really want, but it'll just mean we have to follow TWO sets of comments for the same show. Crazy, man.

Promo: R5 Central (28:32 - 29:15) The Otakon-bound Mike Dent managed to post an interview with Mark Musashi, tokusatsu fan soon to be seen on Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight. Mike fails to spend the entirety of this 2-part interview talking about the fact that Mark did motion capture for God Hand and Thunderbolt Volgin in Metal Gear Solid 3. He better watch out for errant bolts of lightning from God as punishment. Kuwabara, kuwabara...
Promo: Robotronic Dynamite (56:50 - 57:53) We have yet to play Ninja Gaiden 2 beyond the demo, but word on the street is that we should wait for it to drop to about half price anyway. Anyway, this podcast features Otaku USA's own Joseph Luster and his merry band of merry men as they talk about movies, videogames, and stuff. In the latest episode, they all seem to have gone to the San Diego Comic-Con, so if you can't get enough of people talking about Watchmen this is the show for you. For the record, Watchmen is BO-RING no matter what the rest of the world claims, and don't you fucking tell me I didn't get it or link me to that goddamned annotations site. Nobody in Watchmen matters besides Rorschach anyway. Oh, you can try to claim otherwise, but you'll have to deny the 90s happened on account that everyone wanted their heroes to be like Rorschach (and DKR Batman). Good luck with THAT.
Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Superman Legend (57:53 - 1:33:00) Clarissa proves once and for all that the Japanese can screw up American properties with equal if not greater efficiency than we can screw up theirs! Whether or not this iteration of the Ninja Turtles is superior to the version that EE "Doc" Finnegan is working on will be judged by history. OR HISTORIANS. Fair warning: Hironobu Kageyama probably will not be performing the theme song to this one as part of his Otakon set. Maybe "review" up there should go in quotation marks, because we really don't want you to watch this. Under any circumstances. So don't watch it.
Review: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Part 3 (1:33:00 - 2:17:48) TJ calls in to let us know that he greatly enjoyed Kaiji upon hearing our review of it, and so can you! Daryl put this one off for a year, but he finally broke down and decided to reread through, rewatch, and replay Part 3 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, more commonly known as "the greatest part of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure." This is the big one that all the swingin' cats know about; a tale of Stands, really big belts, and members of the United States Senate being treated with the respect they deserve. The obscene running length would suggest this review should have just been released as its own podcast, but accessibility was never our trump card. Daryl stopped his own heart about 8 times during the editing of this, and his heart is still stopping every so often even though it's done now. Maybe it's just heartburn. He's got a problem, but if you listen to this review in full, yo you'll solve it.
Closing (2:17:48 - 2:23:18) Show 72 may be a while, so consider yourselves FORTUNATE that Show 71 is as long as it is, because you'll have plenty of time to listen to it all. Preferably not while you're grinding levels in World of Warcraft! Next time, Daryl's back in the Madhouse as he reviews Cyber City Oedo, Clarissa reviews the BL title Dog Style (shockingly, Yasuomi Umetsu is not involved), and Gerald's administering the lead enemas with Burn Up! Introduction (0:00 - 40:16) Remember last episode when we said how vulnerable we were to spending large sums of money when crazy sales happen? We start things off by talking about the financial peril we've placed ourselves in as a result of Right Stuf's latest Geneon clearance and Deep Discount's 20% off sale. Daryl's still short one or two Dragon Dynasty Shaw Brothers releases, but to be honest he never cared that much for King Boxer/Five Fingers of Death anyway. The next Deep Discount sale is around November, but you may want to get your preorders in for GaoGaiGar Premium Box 2 before then since even though it'd be totally sweet to get that for under $19 they probably won't print up very many. Being dedicated and serious journalists, we take this time to read an email from an associate of a known sexual tee-ranosaurus to SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT before giving our thoughts on JACON 2008, which was in a new hotel and location this year. As these pictures clearly demonstrate, the hotel wasn't exactly the greatest.
Let's News! (40:16 - 1:10:30) Tomohiro Kato's otaku expiration date came up five years early, and rather than just commit suicide like all true otaku, he opted to murder a bunch of people in Akihabara. Whether this will help accelerate the future world as seen in Chapter one of Ressentiment remains to be seen, but in true Hudsucker Proxy fashion, Tsutomu Miyazaki has made way for him to inherit the moniker of "otaku killer." Funimation licensed Ookiku Furikabutte which will be released under the name Big Windup, which is kind of surprising given that sports anime has never really caught on in the US because fans just don't realize that the sport being played doesn't matter. In a truly shocking and completely unforeseeable development, PiQ magazine has gone under. The post we mentioned as being on their website has since been deleted, so here's a mirror of it. We cannot possibly imagine what led to this turn of events, so don't take our BIASED AND UNPROFESSIONAL word for it: read for yourself what the former writers of PiQ and Newtype USA are saying about it all (see here, here, and here for starters). Tokyopop (perhaps finally accepting that nobody is buying this stuff) is opting to release their so-called "OEL" properties as Web exclusives, and a third otaku's expiration date clearly passed because following an earthquake in Japan, a corpse was found buried under massive toppled stacks of manga. PS: if you want a free Black Jack poster, please send in your erotic fanfiction about other podcasters besides us.
Promo: Anime Genesis and Anime Diet Radio (1:10:30 - 1:12:53) Benu x Mike is a lazy choice for a submission considering the content of this promo. This weekend at Anime Expo they've got a live podcast panel on Friday at 7:00 PM in LP 4, so be sure to show up and let Benu know that Dave and Joel were doing anime podcasts before he was. Hmm, LP 4...why, that's the theater in the LACC! It so happens that TV's Patrick Macias also has a panel in the very same room Sunday at 1:30 PM, so be sure to chant "nerd girls aren't the future" throughout the proceedings! Review: Black Jack TV / Black Jack 21 / Black Jack: The Two Doctors of Darkness (1:12:53 - 1:36:10) Voicemails remind us that The Serpent and the Panda (aka Panda and the Magic Serpent) can indeed be purchased from Wal-Mart for $1, but it's dub-only and not restored. Art style aside, it's commonly considered one of the first (if not the first) "modern" full-color theatrical anime films. Here, Clarissa expands upon her previous Black Jack review (which you should probably listen to first if you haven't already) to talk about the newer Black Jack animations that have been released this decade. They're much more faithful to the original manga, though how much more faithful won't be fully known until we actually get a proper release of it in English. Which, thanks to Vertical Inc, will be happening soon enough. Expect a Black Jack manga review then. Black Jack is certainly a miracle worker, but wherever there's a Black Jack there's ALL-WAYS Pinoko / Wherever there's fun there's always Coca-ColAAAAAAAAAAARGH
Review: Tekkon Kinkreet (1:36:10 - 2:01:33) In the voicemails, Emily understands the quickest way to our hearts is through being sycophantic, and talking about how and we're so much more awesome than AnimeTV. It's true. It's true. Gerald reviews this theatrical film from Studio 4C that marks the very first time an American director has directed a Japanese animated film through the very same system that a Japanese director would. The results are...something, all right.
Review: Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji - The Suffering Pariah - The Ultimate Survivor (2:01:33 - 2:30:21) Daryl reviews Season One of a series that doesn't seem like the sort of thing which would develop a following among American anime fans. Kaiji is a series with no pretty girls in it or pretty guys. The character designs are by most standards ugly. The budget is relatively low. The episodes are only about 20 minutes long. There are no robots, ninjas, magic spells, cute mascots, gun fights, or sword fights. So what does it have? It has gambling. High stakes gambling. And that's all you really need. Since it was not explicitly stated during the review, please note that there IS going to be a Season Two of Kaiji, but since the series just wrapped up in April it's probably still a year or two away. Daryl was once again a guest on The Greatest Movie EVER! podcast, this time to review The Running Man. For those who can't enough of the Daryl Surat / Paul Chapman [aka White Daryl Surat] combination, the two were also guests on the second episode of Snacktime Online, the new not-yet-a podcast by "Joey Snackpants." The subject of discussion is "Comic Books and Other Media: The Good, the Bad, and the Really Really REALLY Ugly," so if you're interested in hearing us talk about US comicbooks and their adaptations into other media, click here to get the episode. Do be sure to send Mr. Snackpants feedback in order to let him know what you think of the show. Especially if it's hate mail, which there will be after the awesome things that were said; TV's Patrick Macias may never forgive Daryl for his hatorizing! On the subject of hatorizing: Mr. Show sucked just like everything Bob "Let's Go To Prison" Odenkirk has done, and Tina Fey is not funny. Before anyone says "what about 30 Rock?" note that Tina Fey is not funny on 30 Rock. Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan are. Dissension on this matter shall be subject to RAMBO'S LAW.
Erin is stockpiling arms for some sort of apocalyptic war. There are at least two of these cases in her apartment, which Dave Riley may or may not have partaken of in order to shoot members of GeekNights during the Match Game.
Not that much interest in gekiga at NYAF, it seems. It didn't have the greatest time slot though; most people weren't at the con yet. I'll bet money that Katsucon's turns out better.
Much like PT Chapman, Alison joined the Daryl Surat School of Fashion Sense. Maybe she and her man will meditate on THAT next time they talk about ME being abrasive! Hah!
The World Magic: The Gathering Championships were being conducted at the con, so they brought this nightmare out. I have never played a CCG and hopefully never will.
TV's Patrick Macias continues searching for THE TRUTH even after I've stopped.
Maybe there'll be more pictures. Possibly a Youtube video of Rym re-enacting one of Tatsumi's stories.
Show 63 concludes with Clarissa's review of the much-dreaded Crystal Triangle and our run-in with 4chan, the INTERNET HATE MACHINE, at AWA 2007. Two year anniversary? Probably.
Show 62 was running a bit long and we were already two months late on releasing this anyway, so we'll just upload the convention report for AWA 2007 as its own separate thing since we probably won't get much done during the Thanksgiving weekend. You need something to listen to while waiting in line/traffic for Black Friday, right?
If this had been sufficiently planned out, this episode would have also included our con report done at the convention with some dudes with a website, but that'll have to wait for another day. More important AWA photos will be posted then.

Introduction (0:00 - 33:25) Clarissa clearly does not believe in the concept of stating your name at the start of each episode, but we may as well abide by SOME of the podcasting do's, right? No emails this week, since Daryl's got his much-overdue report of the most recent Florida Supercon, a sci-fi convention in South Florida whose attendees largely consist of people who don't go to any other conventions throughout the state and don't seem to have any sort of presence on the Internet whatsoever. There is an entire hidden underworld of anime fandom that is mostly invisible save for events such as this.
Risingsun.net is one of the largest cosplay picture sites around, and due to it being centered in Florida, we know a great deal of the featured people on this site. In fact, the cosplayer with the most pictures of all is Gerald's neighbor. The "Boner Robin" pictures of Troy that Snacks mentioned originated from here, and there's even pictures of us looking dumbfounded for those willing to investigate.
On the opposite site of the eternal Blood War, here's the homepage for AssimilationCon, which is the week after AWA. Decide for yourselves which side is the Tanar'ri and which side is the Baatezu (we get to be the Yugoloths). Just to review: the day after AWA, Daryl has jury duty. The day after that, Halo 3 comes out. Then this convention happens. I bet we have Otaku USA deadlines around then too. Good thing we didn't get conscripted to do panels at Assimilation, oh wait

Here's the doujin cover Gerald was talking about: Review: Suzuka (35:21 - 54:45) Following her highly demoralizing review of everyone's favorite government crime investigation agent, Zaizen Jotaro, Clarissa really needed something to pick her out of that haze. That's when Daryl told her to review Suzuka. Funimation has sent us three discs worth of this show. Clearly they hate us. Perhaps Clarissa can elaborate upon our feelings on this show in an upcoming issue of Otaku USA!

Review: Barefoot Gen (56:11 - 1:28:28) Daryl may claim to be a serious anime fan who discusses serious subjects, but it was his decision to put in the Gap Band song, the sound effect for which made him laugh hysterically as a toddler...and also now. It's too bad that it was used in GTA San Andreas. Regardless, this is an important work that everyone should at least see once, and it's kind of annoying Grave of the Fireflies gets all the mainstream Roger Ebert-level praise while this story remains relatively unrecognized.

Last Gasp Publishing, whose press releases seem to suggest that their editions of Barefoot Gen have sold out multiple printings of several thousand copies each. If that's the case, then where's the next six volumes? I think the recent volumes of Phoenix sold fewer than 100 copies (really, I'm not exaggerating), but those still come out eventually.
Closing (1:28:28 - 1:38:14) People are actually THANKING us for tricking them into watching MD Geist. Must be some crazy variant of Stockholm Syndrome. The current contest is over, since we have entirely too many entries, but there'll certainly be more contests to come. Next er...time, Daryl is going to talk about Robot Carnival like he was originally going to do this time around. In the weeks to come, he'll be burning through a bunch of the stuff that Vertical Inc. has released over the last few months. Gerald managed to find one of the few things DMP publishes that isn't gay porn, Project X: Cup Noodle, which has nothing to do with training chimps to be astronauts. Clarissa, after having been Zaizen'ed and Suzuka'ed, is feeling like murdering children, so it's only fitting that she review When They Cry: Higurashi, which is one that's been repeatedly requested of us. Hey, one of us has to review anime, right?
I think Suzuka's the breaking point: from this point on we'll try sticking to our original principles of reviewing series in their entirety whenever possible, so when we've got just Volume 1 of something, which is happening more and more, we'll try and do mini-reviews that last something like 5 minutes instead. There's no other way we'll get through all of this stuff!

We don't actually have a show recorded for this week, so here's the audio to our interview from Anime Festival Orlando 2007 with Funimation voice actor, director, and comicbook artist Sonny Strait (Krillin in DBZ, Hughes in FMA). None of us have ever done a live interview before prior to this.
After over a month of no new recordings, we have returned, but our attempt to resume normal releases hit some roadblocks. This week, Daryl's finally talking about the Sanrio film Sea Prince and the Fire Child, Gerald discusses the Gainax television series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and Clarissa goes nuts over MPD Psycho.
The total length of this episode ended up being a little over THREE, not four, hours. We have therefore split everything up into two files that are in fact NOT of equal length: one file containing the news and the Nadia review, and the other file containing everything else.
Due to a power outage, the project for unknown parts of the first portion of the show got corrupted. It is very likely that there may be sections of obviously missing dialogue, or that at some point, the dialogue between Daryl and everyone else will shift out of phase.
Supplemental links will come later since this all got "finished" around 3:45 AM and I got about three hours of sleep. In the meantime, marvel at the wonders of this picture:

Introduction (0:00 - 23:51) Daryl has finished moving into his new home and has set up his computer in a large tiled room, thus giving him a constant echo for the foreseeable future from this point on until he stops being lazy and moves his computer into one of the rooms with carpet. We start things off by concluding our 009-1 Volume 1 contest (the winner has actually already responded and received their prize) and beginning a newer contest that is probably going to be semi-ongoing. Listen for the details! As far as emails go, Daryl is enlightened about the secret connection between Shojo Beat and Kazuo Koike, plus we brainstorm for titles of a very important anime genre, that of "things containing frowny-faced men with big eyebrows." We neglected to mention very many frowny faced women with big bushy eyebrows, but we'll blame Clarissa for forgetting about Dorothy Catalonia. Also, Gerald is officially on THE LIST for disliking Fullmetal Alchemist. Finally, just like how junk mail saved Kevin McDonald's life, the AWO saves lives as well!
Promo: Destroy All Podcasts DX (23:51 - 24:37) Even though Jeremy is a dirty, dirty film school graduate (and as such harbors many wrong opinions because opinions can in fact be objectively wrong if they're contrary to our opinions) who gets mad tail yet still claims to be a nerd, we are willing to forgive his repeated transgressions. For you see, now that Daryl suggested he try using a basic diplo-sniper build, he is finally playing the original Fallout. Granted, he is doing the "cheap" evil route of just killing most everyone he encounters because he didn't know how to access the Pip-Boy or his character stats and was somehow unaware that he needed to be searching for a water chip since he's too used to the current age of videogames and their in-game tutorials that exist in lieu of reading the instruction manual, but one of these days he'll come around.

Fine, so it's not really like Katamari Damacy at all. Still, the B.O.T. level here is something indeed.
Daryl reviews this classic feature film from Sanrio, the dub of which is long out of print. Bootleg copies can be had on eBay for about $15-$20, but just download the dual audio DVD rip for free. Sanrio doesn't seem to be wanting to release this one on DVD in the US anyway, so this is the ONLY way that people in America can see this film in English without giving money to bootleggers. I guess now that this and Ringing Bell are out of the way, all that remains is Unico...
UPDATE: It turns out that there is a dual audio Region 2 DVD rip of the movie with English subtitles. The torrent link I used has been changed to reflect this new link.
Promo: Happy House of Hentai (53:58 - 54:20) What better way to cap off a Sanrio discussion than by endorsing podcasts containing "Hello Kitty"? To be more accurate, this show should probably be renamed "Lord Kaos Gives Medical Advice Even Though He Is Not a Doctor," but that's far too long a URL to type.
Review: MPD Psycho Volume 1 (54:20 - 1:07:57) Clarissa reviews this manga from the wonderful mind that brought us The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. This is a violence epic about people with multiple personalities possibly performing serialized killings upon other serial killers a la Dexter. Only this was made first. Right about now is when people are probably going to be experiencing Death Note withdrawal, so perhaps this can be your new fix.
Promo: Anime Pulse (1:07:57 - 1:08:28) Daryl would pester Ichigo and company far more if they enabled user comments on their posts, since he's trying not to register for any more forums if he can help it. Dear anime podcasters: don't you WANT Daryl to comment on your episodes? Then please enable comments on your blog posts that don't require registration. You probably want to throw in a word verification to avoid getting spammed into oblivion, as Dave and Joel have now realized.
Closing (1:08:28 - 1:15:29) For the next few weeks, we are going to be BRINGING THE PAIN down on you suckers. Gerald's closing out his Megazone 23 reviews by tackling Megazone 23 The Third (or as the Japanese say it, "Megazone 23 The Saddle"), Clarissa prescribes a cure for insomnia by reviewing Birth (as well as the Streamline dub of the same OAV entitled Planet Busters!), and Daryl in the face of this onslaught has opted to cut everyone a break and throw you guys a bone (or rather, a stick) by reviewing Demon City Shinjuku.
This is going to get worse before it gets better, and we might need to bring Neil Nadelman in soon to get in on this. Here's timecodes for the second half.

If you think Daryl and Clarissa are lazy as far as getting this podcast released, you should see us when we're trying to come up with ideas for anime reviews!
Review: Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1:10:11 - 1:58:56) Gerald takes a very long time (over 45 minutes) to talk about what is probably the most uneven show, in terms of quality, to ever come out of anime. The only anime out there to feature FRENCH PEOPLE, Miyazaki, getting high on mushroom, planting another sun in the sky, the KKK, and the most selfish bitch anime has ever created. HOWEVER, she was fighting for second place (with Belldandy of all people) as the greatest female character of all time for a good part of the 90's. Witness how we talk so long about the show and focus on the Island Episodes so much that there's no way anyone listening would want to watch this show!
