One Piece is no longer on Cartoon Network, Media Blasters licensed one of Geneon's previously defunct properties Seirei no Moribito, two animations from 90 years ago were recently discovered in a Japanese antique shop, and Dezaki/Sugino aren't working on Golgo 13 or Cobra because they're too busy making an anime out of--of all things--Ultraviolet. We suspect this came about because investors were scouring the Internet and found a webpage proclaiming Ultraviolet to be "the greatest movie ever."

Anti-Promo / Promo: Weekly Anime Review Podcast (45:13 - 46:38)
Hilarious though it may be for us to receive emails and voicemails from people proclaiming other podcasts to be terrible, it does nobody any good if you never ever bring your grievances up with the makers of said podcast themselves. Sure, you're probably thinking "well, there's no point in telling them, since they're not going to change anything anyway," but if enough people mention the same issue, most anyone will start paying attention to it. We would say that "we can only assume people do this to us as well," but as the AWO we see and hear EVERYTHING. In fact, we are watching you poop by way of our operative Jeff Goldblum. Google it if you doubt the claim. Oh, and do listen to Aaron's review of Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms with special guest host Eeeper. Not only is it released through jaPRESS which is operated by TV's Patrick Macias, it's got enough child suffering to bear the Official Justin Sevakis Seal of Approval!

Review: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (46:38 - 1:08:46)
With the US release finally officially forthcoming, Daryl brings out a review of a film from an up-and-coming anime director, Mamoru Hosoda. People are always talking about "who's going to be the next Miyazaki once he's gone" and such, but you know something? We don't need another guy just like Miyazaki to come along. Not when we've got people like Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda, and Masaaki Yuasa right now. All people need to do is start watching the things they make. Judging from the general fan apathy to Yuasa's new series Kaiba, that may be a while yet. Pictures to come.

This is the de facto promotional image for this film, and it's well chosen because it more or less sums up the spirit of the film in one shot. Of course, there's the matter of what happens immediately afterwards...

Review: Ookiku Furikabutte / "Swing Big" (1:08:46 - 1:29:34)
Clarissa may say that phrase translates to "swing big," but deep down she knows the TIMED BY KILLSHOK translation that read "big booty freak" is the one she carries in her heart. Actually, this show is about baseball. Specifically, pitching and catching. If you get the picture. If you don't get the picture, we'll put pictures here later.

Ah yes, baseball. And indeed, the complex strategy and interpersonal workings of the battery.

It is, of course, a sports anime about a team sport. So we should all remember that it's also about team building. Sometimes team building involves holding hands.

This show is also about Mihashi's really good facial expressions. Mihashi: example of actual moe without being a shitty waste of space? Perhaps!

OoFuri also teaches us how to compensate for a lack of female cast members by endowing one with ridiculous breasts! Except Maria's also pretty awesome.

P.S. Teenage boys are spazzes. Oh, the springtime of youth. (This is Tajima, by the way. It may be scientifically impossible not to love him.)

We figured that since we use their free Flash Pickle players on every post for the specific purpose of infuriating Steve Harrison (hint: just disable Flash entirely in your browser if it slows down the page loading so much!), we oughta actually play their promos. It's also a good site to actually find new podcasts to listen to, and if you add the shows you like to a Favorites list, you can get a OPML file of all those feeds together. This is helpful if you use feed aggregator / podcatching software.

Review: Lucky Star (1:29:44 - 2:02:39)
Gerald reveals his inner pedophile by copping to enjoying Lucky Star after the initial crappy episodes. Daryl by contrast KNOWS this show fucking blows from beginning to end, and in a few years will be completely forgotten and remembered by nobody. Actually, it's probably more like a few months. Anyway, listen in to hear how we can talk for over 30 minutes about a show with pretty much no plot at all.

ADV's licensed Season 2 of Ah My Goddess! Wonder how well that'll do for them? Guess we'll never know since the reason they don't publicize their sales figures is because...hey, look over there! Plus, that new Studio Ghibli movie that apparently isn't all that good, Gedo Senki, is getting released in the UK (and possibly Japan) before it hits the US. And Masako Nozawa, the voice of Goku but NOT the voice of Doraemon as we stated (that's Nobuyo Oyama, and she's the Arkanoid friggin' MASTER), thinks modern seiyuu are the pits.

Review: Ringing Bell (1:06:19 - 1:29:14)
This is the part where Daryl tries to impersonate Justin Sevakis, but comes up oh so short. This was a movie from the 1970s released by Sanrio--best known for Hello Kitty--under the name Chirin no Suzu. It was dubbed and released here in 1983, completely intact and with nothing done to hide that it was a Japanese cartoon. However, it's been out of print for decades and there's no DVD. Daryl's invoking the statute of limitations on spoilers for this one, but suffice it to say that this might just be the most depressing children's story ever. Click here to download a 700MB torrent of a VHS capture of this. This has been out of print for decades, so hopefully Sanrio's lawyers will not have us thrown in jail for the crime of wanting people to see this.

Daryl has some nerve to say that he isn't sure of where the story originated from considering it says so right in the opening credits.

Here's Chirin at the start of the tale. Aww, he's so cute that people the world over would spend millions of dollars on Chirin brand air conditioning units.

Until the Wolf King swoops in and fucks up his Christmas. Daryl wishes he could talk like the Wolf King, or at least find the mixer settings that would enable such a thing.

Chirin is quite distraught that JESUS FUCKING CHRIST GOD DAMN IT WHAT THE CRAP IS ELMER FUDD DOING HERE OUT OF NOWHERE

And that's when things officially start to take a turn for the nightmarish...

Review: Alien Defender Geo-Armor aka Kishin Corps (1:29:14 - 1:48:30)
Gerald picked this one up at Otakon since he hadn't seen it and it was something that's been out in the US since the laserdisc days. People always compared it to Giant Robo. How bad could it possibly be? Well...

Review (manga): Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Part 2 (1:48:30 - 2:03:40)
We strongly recommend you listen to Clarissa's review of Part 1 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure before proceeding. Otherwise, this probably won't make sense. But who are we kidding? Jojo's probably wouldn't make sense anyway. But who cares when there's FIGHTING and GORE GORE GORE? And of course poison "wedding rings" with special antidotes.

This is Joseph Joestar, and he's a dork. I don't know why he's wearing what appears to be three hats stacked on top of each other. I guess one hat just wasn't enough for the Joestar majesty. Well, at least it's not merged with his hair. (If you're not familiar with the hair hat, then you haven't read Part 3. Don't worry, we'll review that one too.)

Joseph tends to use his Hamon for overly elaborate ways of throwing things at people, like coke bottle lids, or tripping them. Of course it's hard to keep thinking of him as a badass when he does this sort of thing.

This is Joseph with Caesar, his best friend and ally. They're also both dorks, as evidenced by the fact that they do stupid things like have fights with pasta (and somehow also pigeons and girls) and have dumb moments like this.

This is LisaLisa, and she will totally mess you up. She's also very mature and level headed, which is good when you're working with a couple of tards like Joseph and Caesar.

Behold the ultimate asskicking life forms, Wham, AC/DC and Cars. Santana's not there, but I assure you he was even more naked. Araki sort of rectified the lack of homoeroticism from Part 1 in one fell swoop with these guys.

This is something I think makes Jojo's fights far more awesome than most shonen fighting show battles. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS, BITCHES.

Of course, chariot races with vampire horses help too. What, did you think we were joking about that?

Come on, you know you want to be there for this.

Daryl reviews the 2004 Gonzo anime series Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Gerald reviews the manga Voyeur and its followup Voyeurs Inc, and Clarissa reviews the Studio Ghibli film Omoide Poroporo, aka Only Yesterday.

In an attempt to combat the audio issues from the last episode, we tried recording this episode with us on separate channels then downmixing to mono during the final encode. The initial file we uploaded had all the parts with us speaking as rather soft, with the sound effects and music being louder. The current file, which is exactly the same filesize as the old file so hopefully the feed won't flip out, should hopefully not exhibit that. Also, we might have messed up the sync at points. Please let us know if anything's messed up.

These allegations from Ireland that our pronounciation of manga is almost D4 in its silliness--and for the record, we'd vastly prefer people send criticism to us directly so that we can actually respond to it--are false, we say! False! Clearly, Ireland has been duped by MANGA MAN:

Responding to your emails and voicemails, we reveal: what do we think about FLCL? Have we played Jump Ultimate Stars (which you can play wifi multiplayer against Japanese people), the only game with both Kenshiro and Kochikame fighting side by side? How much of all that oldschool stuff people like and defend is actually GOOD and how much of it is just stuff we like because we saw it way back when or had to make a big effort to get? Marc Handler wrote in to offer some corrections and additions to our interview with him in Show # 37, and here's a correction to THIS episode: the second Voltron set is NOT out. Want to find out who's REALLY responsible for casting dub voice actors? Marc tells us here. How come Gerald and Daryl haven't taken up learning Japanese? And what do we REALLY think about Noir?

• Definition of what D4 means since it's not a term used by anyone in America - a "fake shallow gay accent which is put on to make them feel more important." Essentially, we're accused of talking all "no more buttered scones for me, Mater, I'm off to play the GRAHND PIAHNO. PAHRDON me while I FLHY my AEROPLANE" like. This is where we point out that the "main-ga" pronounciation is not how the Japanese say the word; no seriously, listen to them say it. See that? You saying they're saying it wrong, huh? Yeah, so it's not that we've got a fake pretentious pronounciation, it's that Manga Entertainment can't even say their own motherfucking name right.

Promo: The Anime/Videogame Podcast (37:52 - 39:32)
People often wonder why we play the same set of promos over and over. Well, it's because other podcasts don't send us their promos to play! Send us your promos, and we'll play them. One of our listeners, Victor "Fake_Brasilian" Chaves, has started his own anime/videogame podcast, so we're helping him out by playing his promo. See? That wasn't hard! We do however feel compelled to point out that searching for "anime/videogame" under iTunes returns no results and "anime/video game" returns one result that we thought wasn't theirs because it's called "The Super Anime/Video Game Podcast." But that is indeed it, so remember that it's "video game" and not "videogame." Oh, and by the way, guys: the US courts have ruled that it still counts as kiddy porn if it's drawn.

Review: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (39:32 - 1:07:21)
Daryl takes on this 2004 reimagining of the Alexander Dumas novel, courtesy of Studio Gonzo. Is this show crappy like practically every other Gonzo show ever made? Or did Mahiro Maeda pull it off? This segment was incredibly long, so things like Gerald explaining how much he can't stand to look at this show and Daryl's in-depth analysis comparing the Count of Monte Cristo to the Monte Cristo sandwich at Bennigan's has been removed. Believe it or not, it's a spoiler to properly explain just how similar the two are. Suffice it to say that the manner in which one would defeat the Count, were such a thing possible, is exactly the same method one would use to defeat Daryl Surat.

This is the Count of Monte Cristo. Seriously, how can ANYONE not see him coming?

The Count of Monte Cristo is very much like this sandwich. The Monte Cristo. A vile concoction of ham, turkey, Swiss and American cheese that's battered, deep fried beyond recognition and edibility, then coated in powdered sugar and raspberry preserves to give it an air of class. You won't see THIS coming till it strikes either.A screencap from the fansubs. Yeah, that whole "stop distribution of the fansub once the show is licensed" thing? That's bullshit. I got this off of BitTorrent no problem.The same shot, taken from the DVDs. Sure, you can see there's more detail, but maybe the quality jump is more noticeable in the motion. Or perhaps the character outfits.Aristocratic fashion...IN THE YEAR 2000! This is the textile layering effect on the clothes and hair I was talking about. I can't adequately illustrate this without showing multiple screenshots, but you can get a good idea from this.

This is Peppo. He looks and sounds just like a girl. Stop, stop, Hibari-kun.

Hmm, I don't think these were originally in the book. The marketing makes it seem like this is a show with robots and action in it, but I think they only appear like, two or three times near the end. Guess that's why Adult Swim didn't pick it up. Jerks. If they can run Reign: The Conqueror...

Tony Smith and Ciaran O'Carroll <--- IRELAND ALERT are running this podcast dedicated to classic SF literature and such. Maybe you know about the authors they talk about, but they tend to talk about the more overlooked books. Mind you, these guys like Doctor Who, and Doctor Who fans are rightfully mocked by even the rest of sci-fi fandom PS: Clarissa is a Doctor Who fan.

Review (manga): Voyeur / Voyeurs Inc (1:08:49 - 1:26:40) Gerald reviews this manga by Hideo Yamamoto, author of Ichi the Killer as well as Homunculus which we reviewed in Show # 10. Only instead of being super violent and gory, this one's all about super gross sex. And that's Gerald's speciality!

Clarissa bites the bullet and does a first for this podcast: a review of a Studio Ghibli film. We originally figured "well, everyone knows about Studio Ghibli already," but this one's by Ghibli's other main creative talent Isao Takahata, who is somewhat glossed over by anime fans. Despite airing on TV in January, there is still no DVD of this film in America. We already had VHS fansubs (timed by Enrique Conty, RECOGNIZE), but the DVD of this was sent to us all the way from...

IRELAND ALERT! Yes, thanks go out to Eeeper once more, even though he's seriously treading on Daryl's dreams by saying Kimagure Orange Road is as good as Giant Robo. He's watching DN Angel (which we can confirm is David Williams' favorite show, having beaten out Dirty Pair) so we don't have to.

Rym and Scott exhibited their full recovery from their pierrotlectomies by informing us that the Monty Python Spanish Inquisition-style promo of theirs was not actually meant to be seriously played by anyone, so we're playing the Blues Brothers-style one instead. And you thought it was going to be the Blues Brothers combined with the Inquisition...what a show. They'll be guests at SITACon in New York this weekend, so to help you identify them, here's a picture (Rym is on the left and Scott is on the right):



Review: Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (33:11 - 59:12)
Man. Thirty-six episodes before we officially covered anything directed by Miyazaki, "because everyone knows about him already." Gerald reviews the newly-released special edition available from Manga Video, compares it to the previous DVD release, and in so doing answers the question on the minds of everyone who's ever been hit by a double-dip DVD release: is it worth picking up the new release if you already own the original one? Sure, every other anime podcast has reviewed this movie by now, but only OURS has the foresight to point out how this movie inspired Time Crisis!

• Chris Meadows' Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro commentary track - this has existed in some form or fashion for over two years now, but it was recently updated; pity there's no critically-acclaimed anime films that we're superlative experts on and could make a commentary track for (that wasn't boring)
• Blackmask.com carries many of the translated Arsene Lupin novels, of which there's like 20 of them; thanks to Chris from the Adult Space Child Free Podcast for sending that along

Review: Phoenix [Hi no Tori] (59:12 - 1:26:08)
Daryl didn't exactly write any notes to himself whatsoever prior to doing this segment, but he figured he'd try and schmooze his way through this one anyway. The result is that he takes nearly 30 minutes to say what could have been said in 15, and he completely forgot to fully say exactly what the Phoenix was in the story. It's essentially the Power Cosmic incarnate, or for you Excel Saga fans, the Great Will of the Macrocosm. The will of the universe incarnate, as it were. Phoenix is Osamu Tezuka's life work and perhaps his grandest achievement, having been remade multiple times over the years. The Phoenix being reviewed in this segment is the 2004 remake, but since Daryl can't ever stay on topic, he ends up talking about the other stuff too. Under the guise of "putting things in context," you see. Of course, like all of Tezuka's work, almost nobody in America cares about this even though it's really good. PS: Vertical's English-language release of Ode to Kirihito comes out on October 24th.

• Media Blasters told us at AWA that they do actually plan on releasing the anime, so instead of linking to a torrent for the series, here's the opening so you can see how nice this show looks; Youtube/Google Video doesn't cut it
• Viz Media's excellent release of the Phoenix manga - which nobody except Daryl seems to be buying as it comes out, provided he can actually FIND IT because much like Golgo 13, stores and anime con dealers don't tend to carry it...in addition to what's listed on the Viz page, volumes 7 and 8 of are also out, but they're practically out of stock at both Amazon and Right Stuf
• Tezuka in English - a fantastic resource for those who wish to learn more about Tezuka's output and derivative works over the years
• Osamu Tezuka World - Tezuka Production's official English-language webpage
• This was going to be a link to the full English-language text of the February 10, 1989 article that ran in Asahi following Tezuka's death, but we can't find it anywhere. It's got to be out there, but in the meantime, here instead is the often-repeated quote from said article: "Foreign visitors to Japan often find it difficult to understand why Japanese people like comics so much. One explanation for the popularity of comics in Japan, however, is that Japan had Tezuka Osamu, whereas other nations did not. Review: Embracing Love [Haru wo Daiteita] (1:26:08 - 1:47:35)
But it's not like the Viz Signature line is the only manga imprint you can't find sold anywhere! It's been a while since the last yaoi review, but Clarissa was finally able to track down this Youka Nitta manga released by Be Beautiful. We've decided to deviate from the usual course and do an episode devoted entirely to mecha and giant robots. We know, mecha is easily the least popular genre among anime fans in this day and age. So if this is your first time listening, please know that not all of our episodes are like this.

Turner Classic Movies is showing Studio Ghibli movies every Thursday night for the month of January, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is the top-selling anime DVD of 2005, and Kevin Lillard from Fansview suffers a heart attack at Ohayocon then proceeds to go to Ushicon right afterwards because he's one hell of a trooper.

Review: Gundam SEED Destiny Final Plus (17:16 - 36:12)

Okay guys, here's the thing. This was originally like, 30 minutes of Daryl describing the entire Gundam SEED / SEED Destiny ordeal in detail, and since neither Gerald nor Clarissa have any knowledge of SEED anything, it's just Daryl talking for most of the time. We're really sorry that this episode is as long as it was. Currently we try to shoot for around an hour long running time. Next time, Daryl premieres a new segment in which he compares a classic anime title to its corresponding contemporary remake. He's chosen Area 88 to be first with that. Gerald chooses a different kind of remake for his Often Overlooked pick in the Osamu Dezaki/Akio Sugino title Hakugei: The Legend of Moby Dick, and Clarissa's review is going to contain the thing that we all knew this show would end up containing sooner or later, YAOI. She'll be reviewing Sensitive Pornograph. We figure that'll rebalance the fandom scale now that we've talked mecha for an episode.

Faced with insurmountable obstacles such as Gerald being out of the country, Daryl declaring himself Mayor and assaulting his constituents with pies on the coldest night of the year (click here for pictures), and Clarissa being a girl, our second episode experienced many untimely delays in getting everyone together to record. But we're back and better than ev...er, marginally improved!

Clearly Daryl's influence is spreading like a virus.
