Otaku USA deadlines are (mostly) behind us, our panels at Anime Festival Orlando are all done, which gives us a window of opportunity between now and Anime Weekend Atlanta to actually post something. Better get to it! This time, Clarissa's picking the shows for everyone. In return for what Gerald made her review, she's assigning him to review the Starship Troopers anime.
Introduction (0:00 - 29:45)
We forgot to put this in before. Fortunately, we're just answering emails as usual. None of us can identify the anime that is requested of us, but we did at least properly conclude that the film in question was not Japanese in origin. It was the French film Gandahar. We also find out that someone exists on this planet who has seen Voltage Fighter Gowcaiser entirely too many times (more than once!), and end with some discussion regarding how the Japanese handle lip sync in animation.
Let's News! (29:45 - 59:32)
Weird things are happening and it seems that Andrew WK, possibly the nicest guy in music, is bringing the world an album full of Gundam songs. The world is curious how on Earth this happened, and if we can get a sequel of just lectures about Zeta Gundam from Andrew WK too! Susumu Takaku has died, very sad considering he is probably responsible fo screwing up an entire generation of Japanese anime fans with having written Cutey Honey, Mazinger Z, Fist of the North Star Movie, and Devil Man. Also, Yoshinori Kanada has died, tragically early too, who also has a wide repertoire of works, we can forgive him for Birth, the show we secretly all love and hate. NO LONGER A SECRET NOW IS IT!? And because two isn't enough and four is too many, we have THREE deaths for this episode with the passing of Takuji Endo creator of Clarissa's favorite work EVER, Zetsuai 1989. In less death-y news, Noboru Ishiguro, director of Macross and, honestly, Yamato too, confirmed that a live action Yamato is in the works. Normally we wouldn't talk about this, but since it's Japanese, there is a slight likelihood it'll be made, we'll see if it can possibly be as good as the upcoming TV series! Then we talk about other stuff for a long period of time and show the world how unlistenable we are when we are not heavily edited.

Oh man, Starship Troopers. If you can, watch this opening video along with us and maybe you'll see somewhat prepared for this rather awful piece from 1988:
Yes, as awful as that show is, it is reponsible for give us some of the greatest anime ever, specifically many of those 1980's real robot shows, and we owe it to the artwork in the 1977 re-release of the book. Here's the cover to give you an idea:
This, however doesn't allow for this show to have some of the very worst character designs to ever grace anime. While everyone in this show looks awful, its the females the suffer the most, and Carmencita suffers the most of them:

Anyway, we talk about the awful show, how the book is one of the most important books in anime, and how making something 90% training and only about 5% fighting is really boring. UPDATE: Anime News Network reports that the man responsible for the art direction of this series just won an Emmy.

Vision's character designer was Satoshi Urushihara. The breasts on his female characters are always that shiny because he uses his many, many love dolls as reference. Gerald only has one inflatable anime girl love doll for the moment.
Nene is the worst character, so naturally the Japanese gave her an entire episode. Nothing "proto"-moe about it!
Largo however, is the best character other than Sylia. That Hiroaki Gouda (No. Edam? No.) probably designed him is a true oddity, as he directed the Nene episode then spent the rest of his life directing all the Ah My Goddess! anime.
Maybe Masami Obari might have designed Largo. If Masami Obari is involved and it does not involve either Largo or Terry Bogard, then I'm probably not interested.Obari-tan wants us all to know: this person is DEFINITELY Australian.
As a rule, it is pointless to bother doing high-definition remasterings for most non-theatrical anime made prior to the onset of HD. However, certain bits of hilarious English/Engrish text become more easily noticeable here. WHAT'S THAT BETWEEN THOSE BOOKS NENE, HUH? This must be the REAL reason PT Chapman loves you so. PS: Mackie is "the character we, the viewer, would actually be." Dwell on THAT.
Oh yeah, there's mecha in this series, which is why it's awesome. Sylia is the leader!

This is the part Sonoda was responsible for; the mechanical designs of the hardsuits. Also, the little girl in the first episode FO' SHO'. Note the presence of the high heels which make this awesome and EMPOWERING and why Japanese animation is mature advanced sci-fi storytelling with STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS blah blah blahThis is clearly the Shinji Aramaki part. Because it's AWESOME.
Motorcycles that transform into robots...AND THEY CAN FLY? If they can fly, why even HAVE motorcycles? Only Shinji Aramaki truly knows.This is what happens to most members of the AD Police that are not in helicopters. (If they're in helicopters, they get immolated due to the freaking chopper exploding. Holy CRAP.) Note that this guy lost his hands before losing his arms, and that head comes off about a second after this screenshot was taken.

Introduction (0:00 - 19:22) We decide to try recording ourselves separately then synchronizing the tracks like all real podcasts do, but the last time we tried this was in episode 4 or something and it didn't turn out well. Do vote in that poll on the sidebar and let us know if there's any discernable audio quality difference. With so many folks listening to the show from school or work, people might be able to pick up on that weird underwater robotic distortion that the old Audacity Noise Removal filter induces. Daryl uses the beta version of Audacity which supposedly has better noise removal capabilities. Let us know. And while you're at it, since there's so many other podcasts out there--anime or otherwise--let us know about your show already! If you want any of us on as guests on your podcast, we'll be glad to do it! As long as we don't have to edit anything.
As far as emails go, "Kira" from Koibito Anime, an anime blog written by a husband/wife duo, wants recommendations from us regarding what anime is good for couples to watch since they're currently spending most of their posts watching filth like Clannad and ef - A Tale of Memories. Eff A Tale of Memories, indeed! For the record, guys: the most recent season of 24 was the worst season of 24 EVER. Maybe now that there's no 24 this year they'll take the extra year to actually write out the full story in advance like they did for the first half of Season 1 instead of just taking spin upon spin at the Xanatos Roulette table. On the subject of those, the rest of Prison Break had better get made STAT. It turns out we can't really offer much help regarding their question, even though Gerald and Clarissa also watch anime together every week for about 7 hours. Such is otakudom.
Let's News! (19:22 - 44:12) We finally talk about the now-three-weeks-old news bit regarding how the website Crunchyroll got $4 million for streaming fansubs (also, DVD rips! We neglected to mention that part! Seriously, read this and then try and argue these people are on the up-and-up), which judging from their response here didn't exactly sit well with FUNimation, Bandai Entertainment, or anyone not retarded. That last bit of course rules out the masters of "quantity over quality" themselves, Gonzo since they decided they'd partner up with Crunchyroll and Youtube to stream their newest inevitable disappointments. Perhaps this move will someday lead to an actual worthwhile studio taking similar measures with websites that are NOT infested with Trojan viruses and the like, so it's almost a guarantee that studio WON'T be Bandai Visual, who in this press release noted that they've got to delay the release of a few of their titles since--surprise!--nobody's buying any of their stuff. As the US executive branch often says, "nobody could have possibly foreseen this turn of events." Well, except for everyone who DID that subsequently got ignored. Speaking of stuff getting ignored, two more volumes of the Barefoot Gen manga were released in English (which nobody here will buy) AND we're getting even more Fist of the North Star anime (which nobody here will license)! Everyone will probably be going nuts over Slayers Revolution and Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2 instead. Plus, there's a Blade of the Immortal anime coming soon, but unfortunately it's being made by Bee Train, which if we're not mistaken has never made a single good anime ever.

Not to be confused with Vigo, the villain from Ghostbusters 2, Viga releases three episodes a week through the power of working that sweet Creative Commons magic. Be sure to check her out! Then remind her that "intershiz" is the most infuriating word this side of "blogosphere" or worse yet "podcastosphere"!
Review: Paprika (45:02 - 1:26:15) Daryl decides it's time to MAN UP~! by reviewing Satoshi Kon's latest movie, available on DVD as well as Blu-Ray from Sony Pictures Entertainment. Only he probably forgot to talk about the movie with any degree of substance within the span of these 45 minutes. OR DID HE? Paul Chapman aka "White Daryl" (or as certain cosplay MEAN-kos say, "Light Daryl" implying that Daryl is "Dark Daryl" the way that there's "Dark Gerald" in comparison to Gerald!) will not be pleased since we didn't talk about the very end of the movie. Or the beginning or the middle.
Promo: Destroy All Podcasts DX (1:26:15 - 1:27:31) The best part of this promo is when Jeremy (aka "White Tony") starts talking all INTENSE AND SERIOUS-like. Their latest episode is about Black Belt Jones, and all kung fu related episodes of DAPDX (or DAPST) inevitably result in people asking "do they even LIKE kung fu movies?" The answer apparently is yes. Maybe.
Review: School Rumble (1:27:31 - 1:44:15) Clarissa reviews the first season of yet another anime that's been highly requested, even though there is zero fighting in the show despite the name. It's actually a romantic comedy, only the main characters are blithering idiots. On purpose, for a change! Do check out Otaku USA magazine to see Clarissa's print review of School Rumble as well. If you're going to notice any audio quality difference brought on by the different versions of the Audacity Noise Removal filter, from this point on would be the place.
Promo: Eeeper's Choice (1:44:15 - 1:45:33) Good idea: our favorite Irish anime fan has a new promo out! Bad idea: he assumes that people know how to spell "Eeeper" just by hearing it. How do we know it's not "Ypres Choice," man?! This is like that time he mailed us those DVD-Rs of Osamu Tezuka's experimental films as well as Phoenix 2772 (dub and sub!), but then he wrote on the back of the paper sleeves with ballpoint pen, thus destroying the backs of the discs. Must be all the alcohol mixed with the DEEDLY DEE, POTATOES!
Review: Detonator Orgun (1:45:33 - 2:01:19) Gerald wraps things up by talking about this short OAV by Masami Obari that he also covered in a recent episode of Destroy All Podcasts DX. The DVD of this one is kind of hard to find, plus there's an annoying audio problem that could've been caught had someone just...WATCHED the disc first, but oh well. If you like Tekkaman Blade, you'll want to hear about this one.
Closing (2:01:19 - 2:04:09) The next episode was originally just going to be an all-moe episode out of nowhere, but Clarissa jumped the gun with Potemayo already! So next time the rest of us are putting our moe cards on the line: Daryl's going to cover The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Gerald's breaking down and reviewing Lucky Star. Lucky Star? LUCKY STAR?! Potemayo? Shuffle? ...NAJICA?! Gerald and Clarissa are clearly venturing into Koibito Anime territory at this rate! Clarissa incidentally is opting to pace herself now that she's prematurely jumped the gun so to speak, and since all the advice manuals on this subject state to "think about baseball," next episode she'll be reviewing the baseball anime Ookiku Furikabutte aka Swing Big.
After over a month of no new episodes, this show--recorded a month ago--is now out. Nothing but absolute evil is contained within as Daryl reviews MW by Vertical Inc (featuring nonstop depictions of evil), Gerald reviews Dangaioh (the dub of which is truly evil), and Clarissa reviews the most evil of them all: Potemayo (a moe show). Also, we finally remembered to do another first impressions bit! This time it's Blood+.
Why was this show so delayed? Three words: No More Heroes. Three more words: Replaying God Hand. Anyone who's thinking of racing to be the first to leave a comment just so they can have the first comment should think twice because it's always really obvious that's what you're doing! This time it's the latest Osamu Tezuka title released by Vertical Inc since Gerald reviewed Ode to Kirihito as well as Apollo's Song. Time to start balancing the scales, dangit! Plus, a dangerously powerful voicemail regarding not just Maple Town (despite having never watched the show, Daryl still remembers the tagline and the melody to this from when he was 3) but also Pigeon Blood (Google it your God-damned self, clown).
Review: Hyper Combat Unit Dangaioh (1:26:00 - 1:43:21) Gerald was offended to his core when slanderous things were spoken by slanderers about this cartoon and has decided to forego karmic retribution and get his justice WITH satisfaction. But is it really slander if it's all true? If this is justice...
Review - Potemayo (1:43:21 - 1:58:58) Corbin from Colorado needs to know better than to ask rhetorical questions. Clarissa wanted us to all become possessed by the Warp's most treacherous of spawn, but the God-Emperor Koike guides Daryl's bolter true. Still, the Emperor's protection is not absolute. Each individual brother within the Adeptus Gekigartes must be strong on his own accord. Is Chaos beginning to take hold of the AWO? Will an Exterminatus be deemed necessary? If so, the only thing that will be written on the order will be to Destroy All Podcasts:

In addition to Daryl's already-mentioned appearances on Snacktime Online and Greatest Movie EVER!, Clarissa was a guest host on Destroy All Podcasts DX talking about the Twilight Q OAVs. Gerald will also be a guest host soon on DAPDX to talk about Detonator Orgun, so now that all three of us have been on another podcast, we can only assume that podcast will be destroyed or otherwise cease to exist. Surely other podcasts couldn't contain all three of US, right?
Next time on AWO, Clarissa's reviewing the much-requested School Rumble, Gerald's doing Detonator Orgun just like he's doing on DAPDX, and Daryl's reviewing the also very much requested Satoshi Kon film, Paprika. He initially was taking a pass on this one because "everyone's seen this or knows about it already," but that is apparently not the case. Us fans on the ground still don't know much about what's happening save for this statement that was released, so all we can do is kick the anime punditry into high gear. Unlike real journalists, pundits don't NEED facts. Actually, there aren't very many real journalists left anymore, come to think of it.

As such, he's currently gearing up for the 50th episode of the show. Truly a podcasting milestone! We'd record a congratulatory message to be played at the time, but we keep forgetting.
Review: Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann (1:10:43 - 1:51:46) Clarissa spirals away with one of the most requested titles people have asked us to review in some time. Witness Gainax's return to form as we notice that evolution is a mystery, full of change that no one sees. The YJ Stinger can contains a swarm of bees. HnK thugs say it as they please: "hidebu and abeshi." As they explode out of their spleen, EVOLUTION. EVOLUTION!
The Sonic Soldier Borgman review and the NYAF recap are still to come, but anyone who's thinking they should rush to post a comment immediately before downloading and listening to the show catches a 138 millimeter round through the dome.
Are we deliberately trying to get people to stop listening to us? Not only is this episode late, it's also nearly three hours long. THREE. HOURS. LONG. Review: Space Runaway Ideon (48:27 - 1:21:49) Don't forget to use that voicemail number! Following the news segment, it's only fitting that we play a voicemail about the anime industry and its IMPENDING DEMISE. Gerald pops our Yoshiyuki Tomino cherries by reviewing a series that along with Minky Momo and Cowboy Bebop might just have the most spoiled ending in all of anime. Too bad everybody's wrong since they didn't actually see the show. OR ARE THEY? We're too busy scoping out that SWEET afro to tell.
Review: Godannar (1:21:49 - 2:06:11) Full disclosure: the remainder of this episode of AWO is brought to you by Chris Oarr from ADV Films, who sent us this stuff to review eons ago. Before the carnage unfolds, Daryl saw fit to play a voicemail near and dear to his heart, guaranteed to freeze any heart solid even if it was just exposed to a dreadful Hugh Grant romantic comedy. Anyway, this show is...well, we're probably going to need to resort to pictures. WATCH THIS SPACE.
Promo: R5 Central (2:06:11 - 2:07:44) It's not REALLY an R5 Central promo since the entire thing is just a fake movie trailer that Mike created after being inspired by Grindhouse. Still, Mike "accepts Death Proof for what it is" yet denies that "what it is" is "a boring and crappy movie/extended Kotex commercial with god awful characters and a boring, tedious car chase." Therefore, he is no friend of ours.
Review: Gravion/Gravion Zwei (2:07:44 - 2:37:23) Whenever Godannar is mentioned, Gravion must also be mentioned! Clarissa fields this one since once Daryl found out that the character in it named Sandman did not perform drunken ladder sentons, he had no interest in watching it. Listen on, and bear witness to Masami Obari's resurrection from obscurity. For Daryl, Masami Obari ceased to exist after the Fatal Fury Movie. Gerald, by contrast, owns all of Angel Blade and its sequels.
Closing (2:37:23 - 2:48:22) Review Legend of the Galactic Heroes, huh? What if we spent several hours talking to people who were diehard LoGH fanatics instead? Regardless, that's something on our ever-expanding "to do" pile, and so next week we try to make some headway on reducing that a bit. Daryl's going back and reviewing the remainder of the To Terra manga as well as the new anime series, while simultaneously creating more work for himself by reviewing Volume 1 of Andromeda Stories. Volumes 2 and 3 aren't out yet. Gerald's finally going back and giving his final thoughts on Hakugei: Legend of Moby Dick now that he's seen the entire series, and Clarissa's got the honor of spearheading our Anime Weekend Atlanta convention report. With any luck it'll come out faster than the Ninja Consultant one!
Instead of doing full-on reviews of single-volume titles, we're going to TRY and just talk about them at the end of the show. Gerald actually started this off by talking about Xenosaga the Animation Volume 1 in Show 60, but we forgot to actually put it in the episode. For Show 61, Daryl gives a quick overview of the Blu-Ray release of the Dragon Ball Z: Broly Double Feature. So a three hour podcast where we talked about Gundam, Tomino, super robot shows, and DBZ. This will no doubt be the most reviled episode of AWO ever.
Sure we talk about him a lot, but for our sixtieth episode we've decided to devote the entire show to talking about the God of Manga himself, Osamu Tezuka. Daryl's reviewing the Astro Boy TV series (take your pick), Clarissa's reviewing the Black Jack OAVs and movie, and Gerald's reviewing the manga Apollo's Song.

Promo: Greatest Movie EVER! (43:27 - 44:05) It's the Big Month of Dick over at the Greatest Movie EVER! podcast, where they're talking about film adaptations of Philip K. Dick exclusively! Featuring a bunch of guest reviewers, including Jeff "Rich Lather" Tatarek, who made this promo instead of making his own podcast. As late as we are in getting shows up, his Robot Carnival review still isn't there! In any case, we remain satisfied that people start off by listening to AWO, hear promos for Dave and Joel, Greatest Movie EVER!, Lather's Blather, etc. then determine that they're more entertaining to listen to than us (and shorter, too!) and stop listening to us. If we were concerned about listenership, we wouldn't be pulling stunts like...
Review: Astro Boy (44:05 - 1:39:07) Daryl doesn't care that absolutely nobody in America cares about Astro Boy. He's going to talk about the Birth of Astro Boy storyline as portrayed in the original manga, the 1960s TV series, the 1980s TV series, and the 2003 TV series, no matter how many people don't give a crap. The cool people are interested and not at all bored to tears. Both of them.
Dark Horse Comics has released the original Astro Boy manga over the span of 23 volumes. You can get these for about $1-$4 each used.

Promo: Anime Roundtable and Review (21:51 - 22:12) Radio TGO is a broadband online radio station primarily devoted to sports discussion. However, there is an anime show on there which is recorded live! They must certainly have it together more than we do, especially since they were able to make a promo lasting a mere 20 seconds! The problem is that the show airs on like, Sunday at 11:00 PM or something. Stupid live audio streams with their schedules! Fortunately, you can listen to all of the episodes at the website. Just be warned: there's a lot of fanservice/maid show stuff listed here, which suggests that they reviewed that stuff of their own free will.
Review: Ergo Proxy (22:12 - 48:27) Remember that time last year when EVERYONE wouldn't stop talking about this show as if it were the second coming? A lot of that buzz seemed to quickly die off within a month or two, but now that Geneon is releasing the DVDs, Daryl's decided to see what all the fuss was about. Deep Discount and DVD Pacific as always have the best prices, charging about $20 per disc; the first 3 discs are out so far which means that Volume 4 which comes out in May will contain all the MOST DANGEROUS episodes. What is the secret behind Ergo Proxy? Is Re-l Mayer's father Oscar Mayer, as we all so dearly hope? And is Daryl compassionate enough to not play voicemails when people leaving them ask that they not be played, thus assuring that people would still want to call in? This picture should answer anything not revealed in the review: Promo: Anime Roundtable (48:27 - 49:04) No, see, it's NOT the same podcast as the one we played the first promo for. That's the joke: that there are now enough anime podcasts out there such that there are multiple ones that share very, very similar names. However, this one is actually quite good. WARNING: CONTAINS 100% CANADIANS.
Review: Megazone 23 Part 2 (49:04 - 1:06:39) Gerald reviews the directorial debut of Ichiro Itano, and as noted in Show 50's review of DYRL, Itano's forte is as an animation director. As an overall director he ends up making "stellar" work such as Angel Cop and Violence Jack. This one's a lot different from Part 1, and you need only look at the character designs by Yasuomi "Doggy Style Pedophile" Umezu to figure that out. In Daryl's mind, the ending song to this is forever associated with Jeff Tatarek's Super Hyper Mega Bloody Ultra Cosmo Death Extravaganza X-23 since he saw that before he saw this. All of Megazone 23 is always included as part of those sales ADV has every other week or so, so you should be able to get this for about $6.
Promo: R5 Central (1:06:39 - 1:07:39) Mike informs us that over on the R5 Central Myspace page there's some TRUE TOKUSATSU FAN who's quite up in arms over the comments Daryl made in Episode 33 of R5 Central. We were going to reprint those comments here, but the Myspace code is so shoddy and the layout is so astonishly unreadable that trying to perform a Find on the page causes errors in the browser. However did that site get so massively popular anyway? People who use Livejournal (such as Clarissa) may be terrifying, but at least the underlying software is good.
Review: Hades Project Zeorymer (1:07:39 - 1:23:59) Clarissa tackles this 4-part mecha OAV that's over before you know it. Robot fans only for this one: regular, well-adjusted humans need not apply. It's two DVDs, but now that CPM's catalog titles are all so cheap, you can probably get both discs for about $12 in all. Man, Clarissa really does get the best emails and voicemails. We were thinking of just looping the part at the end Max Headroom style, but we wouldn't want to steal the spotlight from Don Imus.
Closing (1:23:59 - 1:27:51) This episode was recorded about three weeks ago, and we noted that we were all about to find ourselves with a decided lack of spare time due to work, school, conventions, and such. That is what's currently happening right now, which is the real reason for this episode coming out as late as it did. Next time won't be a typically structured show, since it'll consist of two fairly long segments that reasonable podcasters would have released as their own separate episodes. First, we're going to talk all about anime bootlegging since we've discovered that a lot of people don't realize that a lot of anime and anime-related merchandise aren't legitimate goods. We're an audio show, but hopefully we'll be able to give some pointers for how to identify this stuff. Second, we've put it off for far too long: we're going to talk about the journal Mechademia, as seen on our sidebar. This is a journal of academic writings pertaining to anime and the like, so we're not too well-equipped for the task. But we're going to do it anyway, and we're going to talk about pretty much every single paper in there. It won't be pretty.
It's our glorious 50th episode! Gerald reviews Megazone 23 Part 1, Clarissa's got Princess Tutu, and Daryl rambles about Macross: Do You Remember Love? for nearly an hour. Judge for yourselves whether we condone bootlegging/are as bad as Coultergeist.

Reintroductions are in order, even though we aren't exactly in order ourselves. In the emails, the emails, what what, the emails: we get more speculation regarding why anime companies don't publicize much in the way of numbers, respond to allegations of spreading hate speech, reveal the truth about THE TRUTH, and try to find out whether we have any favorite anime genres or not. We don't have any news really, but Patrick Macias (as seen on television) aka MD Patrick has been named Editor-in-Chief of the upcoming print magazine Otaku USA. The first issue comes out in June, but we have a SHOCKING REVELATION about the content of this publication that you can find out by listening right now!
On the subject of conventions, we were asked to mention this before April 1st, and because we doubt that the next episode will be out before then, so we'll mention it here. On Sunday April 1st from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Zenkaikon is holding a nerd prom! Review: Megazone 23 Part 1 (42:40 - 1:02:22)
Yes, it's pronounced "two three" and not "twenty three." Just ask someone who legally changed their name to Megazone that I think listens to this show even though he's never written in. This is a really important feature-length OAV as far as American anime fandom is concerned, as it served as a "gateway anime" for many people even though you don't usually hear it mentioned much anymore. Gerald invokes the statute of limitations regarding spoilers on this one, but this one was always more about the SUPER DUPER 1980s-ness of everything than the plot itself so don't let that stop you from listening.
Promo: The Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast (1:02:22 - 1:02:53)
Paul Chapman is a resentful shell of a man on the grounds that his movie ideas are completely wrong roughly 1/3 to 2/3 of the time and he does not have a sexy voice. Also, his mom gets all the fan mail. But just so everyone listening knows, that was his weak arm.
Review: Princess Tutu (1:02:53 - 1:25:35) Aaron from WARP calls in to mention how much better Clarissa sounds now with the new microphone, but perhaps the fact that Daryl not only uses the Levelator but also the Audacity beta Leveler tool on top of that since he forgets that he used the Levelator invalidates any such improvements. This one's a semi-recent magical girl that's an awful lot like Revolutionary Girl Utena in many aspects, but unlike Utena this totally didn't catch on in the US despite positive reviews, and that's a shame. We speculate as to why that might have been the case, though perhaps the split reactions among us with regards to this show sums it all up.
Nothing Remotely Resembling a Coherent Review: Superdimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (1:25:35 - 2:09:22)
Megazone 23 Part 1 may best encompass the 80s look, but this movie, which incidentally featured much of the same staff, best encompasses the 80s anime spirit. Daryl knew full well that he could never put together a proper review of this, since the Egan Loos of the world that know the exact missile capacities of the fighters would have his head, so he opts not to have done any research or taken any notes before speaking. The result is a segment that by itself is the length of most typical podcasts. Normally we don't bother with this approach, but this is Show # 50 and, more importantly, this is DYRL we're talking about here. Since this movie will not be seeing a US release any time soon, here is a BitTorrent link.
Otaku may not necessarily remember love, but at least we can remember that once upon a time, we weren't all dead inside. Listen and perhaps you'll find out why.

(20:33 - 40:43) Kadokawa, undoubtedly best known around the USA for bringing us ABSOLUTE ZERO, NOW!, is going to start distributing their movies via BitTorrent, Yamato Toys is expanding their US operations, the live-action Speed Racer has a set release date, a doujinshi circle somehow sold 15,000 copies of their comic and got nailed for it, the cost to license one episode of anime for release in the US officially averages to $20,000 per episode but can go as high as $80,000, and the Go Nagai Chibi World OAV is getting remastered. In the rumors department, Discotek might actually release something new and Tokyopop might have licensed one of the Gutsoon!/Raijin Comics titles (presumably Slam Dunk), but in the flat-out FACTS department, Hajime no Ippo is THE BUSINESS and Initial D is for people in the Home For Infinite Losers. Also, there are now Rilakkuma condoms.
Promo: Anime Pacific (40:43 - 42:17) Never mind that this promo is entirely too long; see that website background? ONE OF US! ONE OF US! Clearly Daryl's advocacy is proving effective. Even though that fansub script for Raoh Gaiden they made totally used "hegemony" as every other word.
Review: Satsuma Gishiden (manga), Volume 1 (42:17 - 1:04:22) Daryl reviews this fine gekiga title about angry samurai who run around in loincloths and scream like lunatics, as drawn by a master calligrapher. It goes without saying that this is a title from Dark Horse Comics, makers of all sorts of totally rad manga that nobody fucking sells anywhere. Otherwise, this review would also cover Volume 2. Wait, Mail Volume 2 is out? They're on Volume FOUR of Oldboy? God damn you, bookstores and comicbook shops. Oh well, at least you can order them online. Review: Spirit of Wonder (1:05:26 - 1:20:35) Gerald has not one, but two different titles to review here, though we get the feeling that neither of them really have any business being classified as "hard sci-fi." No, this is more of a whimsical light romance affair, though Inignokt and Err better step back if they know what's good for them. WHICH THEY DON'T.
Review: MAZINKAISER~! (1:20:35 - 1:52:18) Due to strict awesomeness quotient laws enforced by the federal government, Clarissa is obliged to tell people on the air that MAZINKAISER~! will not change their life and is not as good as GaoGaiGar. These laws do not apply in print. The truth is that it WILL change your life--entirely for the better--and that if there is anything it is not as good as, it would be Getter Robo. After all, how can one TRULY believe in GaoGaiGar's superiority without acknowledging that GaoGaiGar Final is better than the series itself?
The reason there has not yet been any sort of MAZINKAISER~! vs SHIN GETTER ROBO~! is because that would violate even Japan's awesomeness quotient laws, which are generally more lenient than ours. Make the right choice, Shinzo Abe.
Promo: Dave and Joel's Fast Karate for the Gentleman (1:52:18 - 1:53:08) This is actually a fan-made promo and so there's nothing in it mentioning the website. Wait, they get fan-made promos?! Actually, we got a fan-made promo too from The Comics Interpreter, but it's like three minutes long and no podcast would ever actually run that. However, it was professionally done and was awesome. We received this promo and have done nothing with it since...August 2006. Hmm. Maybe THAT'S why we don't get fan-made promos...

Daryl reviews the gekiga/manga titles The Push Man and Other Stories and also Abandon the Old in Tokyo by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Clarissa reviews the recent anime series Black Lagoon, and Gerald reviews the second of the Robot Romance Trilogy, Voltes V. The comics contain lots of dead babies, they probably shoot babies in Black Lagoon, and women are repulsed enough by 70s super robot anime such as Voltes V that they miscarry.

Introduction (0:00 - 33:10) Yes, it takes us the length of most entire podcast episodes just to say what we're going to talk about. But we also have listener feedback to go through...sort of. Naka-Kon's in Kansas City--not Kansas--on the first weekend of March, where their guest will be none other than Stevie B, or as they used to say in the IRC days, STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVE BENNNNNNETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! "Stevie B" is shorter and more accurate. For the umpteenth time, we talk about the whole issue of people using "manga" to describe non-Japanese comics, but apparently there's what we believe and what everyone else seems to believe. They laughed at Galileo, they laughed at Copernicus...and right now we're not looking so good. And what is a TRUE cosplayer, anyway?
Let's News! (33:10 - 54:08) ADV has acquired the rights to release 009-1, a recent series which nobody bothered to fansub because nobody seems to ever fansub Shotaro Ishinomori-based properties. We haven't seen the show ourselves, but it involves something ribald, no doubt. Funimation's going to be remastering all of Dragon Ball in widescreen, except the show wasn't originally in widescreen. We strongly suspect it to be a Project A-Ko job, since when you look at the comparison footage sections it is TOTALLY OBVIOUS THAT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE PICTURE HAVE BEEN CUT OFF. Hopefully the Daizenshuu EX podcast knows the score, as their latest episode is all about Funimation's "cover-ups" over the years with regards to releasing the series.
Actually, upon further investigation over at this forum thread on Daizenshuu EX, we were wrong. It looks as though not only the top and bottom of the picture are being cut off...BUT ALSO THE SIDES. No really, take a look at these comparison screenshots:

Viz is going to be releasing digital downloads of Death Note, presumably in high-quality fansub format. We really hope this gets done properly (that is to say, not like how other paid anime digital downloads are), and more importantly, priced reasonably. In addition to Vertical Inc's upcoming English-language release of the 1970s shojo manga "To Terra...", there's also going to be a new Towards the Terra television series. Finally, Sony really screwed the pooch on this BluRay thing. Wait a second, I thought this was supposed to be NEWS!
Promo: Weekly Anime Review (54:08 - 54:42) Due to the grim nature of existence, Aaron hasn't been able to do a new episode for the last month and a half, but he's back with a review of Perfect Blue. Well, actually the review is by someone else because people record reviews and send them to him for him to play. Be sure to do that CHAM dance as you listen.
Review: The Push Man and Other Stories / Abandon the Old in Tokyo (manga) (54:42 - 1:25:17) In reviewing these publications by Drawn and Quarterly, Daryl offers forth a brief primer on gekiga, before speaking at length about dead babies and film noir. But to be serious for a moment, while Yoshihiro Tatsumi never really got a whole lot of financial success or critical acclaim, his contributions to the development of Japanese comics shouldn't go overlooked. That's where we come in!
Interview with Yoshihiro Tatsumi in Publisher's Weekly -- this is how Daryl pretends to be knowledgeable; he reads things other people wrote and then regurgitates the information. What separates him from a scholar is that scholars can actually process and analyze this information. Also, they remember the things they read.

Review: Voltes V (1:27:04 - 1:50:14) We are so totally jazzed over all the hits from the Philippines that'll inevitably result from this...MAYBE. Marvel and be amazed as grown adults talk about a show for 8 year-olds. You know it's for 8 year-olds because the toy commercials for Voltes V teach all the important life lessons you should be aware of before you're grown up, namely that it's better for the robot to take the beating than you:
Review: Black Lagoon (1:50:14 - 2:17:16) This is one of Clarissa's favorite shows that have recently aired. It's one great big homage to Hollywood action movies, and you either understand this from the start or you don't. It's pretty violent, but if you were an 8 year-old that watched it, the lesson you'd learn would be "if you shoot enough people, nobody will notice how crappy your tattoo is, or perhaps they will notice it but they won't bring up how dumb it looks out of fear of being killed, just like how nobody makes fun of Dio or Zangetsu the Mid-day." Daryl can't stop talking about Jay Karnes, unless he's talking about the Greatest GREATEST Movie EVER of course. He'd make a damn fine action hero, that Jay Karnes. And Kenneth Johnson should be cast as Max Payne, if that movie ever gets made.
Promo: GeekNights (2:17:16 - 2:18:15) Rym and Scott are not really a fan of playing promos, since promos people record are never indicative of the nature of the actual show (we're living proof). It's far more productive promo-wise to just mention the name of another podcast and talk about it positively, sort of like how in AM talk radio they just suddenly start talking about riding the NordicTrack for 15 minutes. That said, we gotta have SOMETHING to give people a break from our terrifying voices.
Closing (2:18:15 - 2:24:13) We're all losing our minds. See that running time? Yeah, our sanity? It's broken. And as proof of that, THE NEXT EPISODE OF AWO IS ENTIRELY ABOUT HENTAI. Gerald, the architect of this scheme, shall be reviewing Urotsukidoji aka Legend of the Overfiend. Clarissa's reviewing a hentai manga entitled Pink Sniper by her favorite hentai artist, Yonekura Kengo. And Daryl's mental state is at the point where he can watch Kanashimi no Belladonna and live to tell the tale.
That's not even the worst shot of her, in face, that's pretty much how she looks in every shot.
