Anime World Order Show # 85a - Don't Shorten the Show, Just Split It Up

As we kick off 2010 we've decided to try experimenting with releasing episodes in both per-segment as well as contiguous versions. Last time we posted the segments just on the website and the full show on the RSS feed. This time we're doing the opposite: posting the segments to the RSS feed and the full show contained in one file just on the website. The remaining parts will be posted to the RSS feed once a week over the next month, but since you've come to the website, we'll give you the option of downloading the entire show right now. Daryl reviews the anime adaptation of Violence Jack by Go Nagai, Gerald reviews Bobby's Girl, and Clarissa reviews the book The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga by Helen McCarthy.

Click Here to Download Part 1 - Emails and News ("only" ~72 minutes!)

No Pickle Player this time. The Wordpress migration is imminent and it'll have its own built-in Flash player. For now, the ever-changing test layout is over here. Show notes later. It's 2:00 AM.

Introduction (0:00 - 31:20)
None of us really felt like leveling out the audio or editing out the various "y'knows," "um's" and the like because there are far too many good videogames we have bought but not yet played. We elaborate on the nature of seinen manga/anime and give some examples of titles we like. We also hear of yet another person tricked into watching Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight as a result of this review we did. Finally, someone asks about the Daicon animations (now on Youtube: watch high-quality copies here and here!)as well as female anime directors.

Let's News! (31:20 - 1:08:05)
Daisuke Gori is dead. Nobody buys sports anime in America. The Allure of Japan's Pop Culture is straight-up good ol' fashioned government propaganda that continues to push the "Cool Japan" BS narrative only espoused in the US by people with books to sell. The people who spend the most time pushing the "weird Japan" narrative (that rename their articles after the fact) should probably not decry the mentality that directly results from their very own actions first and foremost. We check out actual Japanese manga circulation numbers. And Tim Eldred informs us that Space Battleship Yamato: Rebirth is not the worst thing ever made, thus surpassing ALL expectations.

Review: Violence Jack (1:08:05 - 2:02:04)
It took several years to get to the second in the trinity of the Holy Manga Video Trinity of Suck (the first being Angel Cop and the third being Mad Bull 34 by Kazuo Koike). But that's because Violence Jack is the least clip-worthy of the three, cut or uncut. After roughly two years of putting it off, Daryl finally reviews this behemoth, the shonen work that established modern-era post-apocalyptic fiction as we know it.

Promo: Anime82 (2:02:04 - 2:02:58)
The preceding review was made possible by Regan Strongblood, who provided us with copies of uncut Violence Jack long before such a thing was available. Of course, since we put it off for two years, you can now simply download torrents of uncut Violence Jack. He asks that you all grow some mecha balls, and by that he means ones like Devastator's in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen aka "the 4th most important movie of 2009."

Review: Bobby's Girl (2:02:58 - 2:31:50)
On the subject of things that a few years ago were impossible to find but can now be easily acquired via BitTorrent, Gerald reviews this 1980s classic. Fairly light on dialogue and somewhat experimental in its overall approach, it encapsulates a great number of different animation styles within its fairly short running time.

Review: The Art of Osamu Tezuka (2:31:50 - 3:07:00)
Clarissa wraps things up by reviewing the hardcover edition (with DVD) of this new coffee table style book by Helen McCarthy. Filled with a variety of never-before-seen pictures from the life and times of Japan's "God of Manga," this book is totally worth buying via this Amazon.com link so that we can make like forty cents commission. Remember: it'll stop a bullet! Disclaimer: the AWO makes no guarantees as to the the size or caliber of the bullet that this book can stop.

Closing (3:07:00 - 3:14:59)
Following the shocking revelation that this podcast does NOT cure insomnia (also of note: Peacock King is FREAKING INSANE), we would like to note that both Daryl and Clarissa will indeed be doing panels at Anime Boston 2010. In the next episode, we're turning the difficulty on this all the way up to Bitter as Gerald reviews the movie that put Gainax on the map aka Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Clarissa reviews 5cm Per Second by Makoto Shinkai, and Daryl reviews Swallowing the Earth by Osamu Tezuka. In the meantime, we will probably post up a bonus episode with our 2000-2009 anime in review retrospective.

Anime World Order Show # 81b - Tickle Me Pink Elmo Would've Prevented Cannibalism

Show 81 concludes with Daryl's review of Kekko Kamen and Clarissa's review of Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman. Along with the post-Anime Expo news, can you really call it the second half of a podcast when it's over 2 hours long? WE CAN!

Full show notes with pictures and stuff later. Maybe. It's nearly 2:00 AM, already.

Let's News! (0:00 - 53:41)
Notes forthcoming, much like last week's episode which is still listed as "notes forthcoming." If only one of us had some sort of online repository full of links and subject material for this segment that could be easily pasted into these spaces...

Review: Kekko Kamen (53:41 - 1:26:41)
Go Nagai? Restraining himself? H...holding back?! GODDAMMIT WHERE THE HELL IS JACK?! Reports suggest his knife is made of Super Alloy Z, but this is contradicted by the fact that it breaks all the time and he just summons forth a new one via the power of VIOLENCE~!. In any case, Kekko Kamen is a textbook example of how far we've come [fallen...?] over the last 30 years. Can there even truly BE screenshots of this, either of Kekko Kamen herself or the villains? Maybe we'll just post the English translated lyrics to the theme song.

Review: Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman (1:26:41 - 1:57:08)
Everything you need to know about this cartoon is succinctly encapsulated within its title. But maybe we should post some pictures of it anyway.

Buddha wants to make one lucky woman a superhero!

Sadly, this mostly involves wearing a really unfortunate outfit. And lots of butts. Buichi Terasawa and Sir Mix-a-Lot would both be proud.

Butt-related persecution, even!

It also involves stupidly ripped pretty boys.

Lesbian subtext.

And lots of blatant copyright infringement.

Promo: Anime Hell (1:57:08 - 1:58:06)
The Sounds of Hell involve Isaac Hayes and Yaphet Kotto. Including a promo for the Greatest Movie EVER! podcast to promote Daryl's guest appearance to discuss Ninja III: The Domination was considered, but ninja don't MAKE sound.

Closing (1:58:06 - 2:12:13)
Next time, all that remains on the "one person recommends titles for everyone else" train is Clarissa. She has opted to do unto others as was done unto her. It's a gamble. A very risky gamble. But also a manly gamble. Manly enough to the point that it's probably really gay. But if you can get past the fact that the gamble is so gay they have their pants zipped down a lot, you'd see it was awesome. What we're trying to say here is that Clarissa's reviewing One Outs next time. As for Daryl and Gerald? THAT IS CLASSIFIED (for the next few hours). Be on the lookout: there's a deadly stinger at the end of all this.

Anime World Order Show # 54c - The All-Gerald Experience

If you're seeing this page as a result of the link on ANN, we recommend you not listen to this show first. Instead, please click on the Review Index link on the right-hand side of the page and choose a topic of interest to you. You can also click on the Podcast RSS Feed link for a full listing of all of our episodes along with brief synopses of the topics covered.

It's time, it's time, it's...GERALD TIME! The extra drawn-out Show 54 continues as a result of Daryl's moving, so this week is Gerald's review of Black Lion by the almighty Go Nagai. Egged on by Daryl's solo recordings last week, Gerald follows suit.

Introduction (00:00 - 12:00)

In hoping to keep the pain to a minimum Gerald decided to read one viewer email. To talk about Kinokuniya Books, Gerald went to it in San Francisco about ten years ago and still has the exact manga anthology that he bought there sitting next to him. WHY? Well, because insanity is endemic in anime fandom and no other reason. Gerald also comments on the lack of anime music on iTunes and is STILL pissed off that the few songs he bought with free promotional iTunes money are lost to him forever in the world of iTunes Digital Rights Management. Also, Gerald reveals a big secret about himself in that he actually enjoys the Kingdom Hearts games, although, like the listener who wrote in, he's not an "SUPER CRAZY INSANE FANFIC/FANART/YAOI Fan" and just enjoys them enough to borrow them. Also, as far as we know, there is no place to find all of Cyborg 009 in complete subtitled format and the closest thing to it is an Australian release of the very good dub, GOD DAMMIT SONY, YOU CAN'T STOP FUCKING UP CAN YOU!? He ends the letter segment with a commentary by R5 Central's Mike Dent on the many times he's been mentioned on the show.

News (12:01 - 17:54)

In the sexiest opening to the news that we've ever done (and also the most obscure ever, does anyone know where that strange MIDI track comes from?) Gerald talks about the recent death of one of the most recognizable composers in anime, Kentaro Haneda, with accompanying sexy music. The questionably unbiased AnimeTV is going to be shown on Comcast Cable. Of course, a video podcast, featuring a bunch of employees of Bang Zoom Entertainment, reviewing work by Bang Zoom Entertainment is, of course, going to be totally unbiased RIGHT!? Also, big surprise, there's going to be a new Gundam TV series named Mobile Suit Gundam 00, which will be incredibly popular but will still be awful because the worst director working in anime is at the helm, Seiji Mizushima. A man who absolutely thinks he's some sort of comedian when he's not funny at all. No, the same joke for 52 episodes is NOT funny! It's also being written by Yousuke Kuroda who is the most up and down writer in anime with the ability to write such amazing shows like Battle Athletes Victory, Magical Project S (probably the best Tenchi related thing done), and Ring ni Kakero, but then turns it all round to write utter shit like Please Teacher!, Panzar Dragoon (Gerald watched this show with an ADV voice actress who was embarrassed to find out later that what she was watching was something ADV put out).

Review: Black Lion (17:55 - 38:23)

Gerald came into Black Lion completely by accident when Clarissa got it free in the mail with a purchase from ADV's website and Gerald traded for the Kenshin OAVs. Gerald is extremely glad he did so as Black Lion is quite possibly the best hour of insanity and destruction ever produced delivered like only Go Nagai can produce! The is the only show featuring cyborg ninjas/samurai, plasma bombs, time machines, fire bombs, stabbing, head crushing, missile shooting, fire spitting, beheading, head chopping (yes they are distinct), and Oda Nobunaga! What more could you possibly want! Screenshots to follow possibly.

Closing (38:24 - 39:23)

Next week, we're not entirely sure, but it might be the all Clarissa episode, maybe, maybe not, we'll see. Perhaps we'll be back to the regular show, only time will tell.

Anime World Order Show # 48 - DON'T WANNA KNOW WHY, EVERYBODY READY GET IT ON!

Daryl reviews the MANLY MANGA Satsuma Gishiden, Gerald reviews the MANLY CARTOON Spirit of Wonder (what?), and Clarissa is the MANLIEST of us all since she reviews MAZINKAISER~! which law dictates must be spelled in all-caps tilde exclamation point.

Show notes are possibly delayed due to us all undertaking an impossible mission, and by that we mean that Daryl got a Nintendo Wii.

Introduction (0:00 - 20:33)
Is there such a thing as "anime literacy", and can we recommend any nonsensical anime comedies? We talked about that for 20 minutes?

Let's News! (20:33 - 40:43)
Kadokawa, undoubtedly best known around the USA for bringing us ABSOLUTE ZERO, NOW!, is going to start distributing their movies via BitTorrent, Yamato Toys is expanding their US operations, the live-action Speed Racer has a set release date, a doujinshi circle somehow sold 15,000 copies of their comic and got nailed for it, the cost to license one episode of anime for release in the US officially averages to $20,000 per episode but can go as high as $80,000, and the Go Nagai Chibi World OAV is getting remastered. In the rumors department, Discotek might actually release something new and Tokyopop might have licensed one of the Gutsoon!/Raijin Comics titles (presumably Slam Dunk), but in the flat-out FACTS department, Hajime no Ippo is THE BUSINESS and Initial D is for people in the Home For Infinite Losers. Also, there are now Rilakkuma condoms.

Promo: Anime Pacific (40:43 - 42:17)
Never mind that this promo is entirely too long; see that website background? ONE OF US! ONE OF US! Clearly Daryl's advocacy is proving effective. Even though that fansub script for Raoh Gaiden they made totally used "hegemony" as every other word.

Review: Satsuma Gishiden (manga), Volume 1 (42:17 - 1:04:22)
Daryl reviews this fine gekiga title about angry samurai who run around in loincloths and scream like lunatics, as drawn by a master calligrapher. It goes without saying that this is a title from Dark Horse Comics, makers of all sorts of totally rad manga that nobody fucking sells anywhere. Otherwise, this review would also cover Volume 2. Wait, Mail Volume 2 is out? They're on Volume FOUR of Oldboy? God damn you, bookstores and comicbook shops. Oh well, at least you can order them online. Here's some Amazon links for the first two volumes: if you buy them through clicking these, we get some money for it or something.

And if you want to buy the comics anthology containing Fairy Princess Yukio Mishima, it can be yours for $10 shipped by heading over to Cheap Disposable Entertainment!

Promo: Popcorn Samurai (1:04:22 - 1:05:26)
Yeah yeah, so his show isn't actually "weekly," but it's not like we're ones to talk. Because of Daryl's review, he picked up Le Chevalier D'Eon Volume 1. AND his next episode is about Kazuo Koike. Clearly Daryl's advocacy is proving effective.

Review: Spirit of Wonder (1:05:26 - 1:20:35)
Gerald has not one, but two different titles to review here, though we get the feeling that neither of them really have any business being classified as "hard sci-fi." No, this is more of a whimsical light romance affair, though Inignokt and Err better step back if they know what's good for them. WHICH THEY DON'T.

Review: MAZINKAISER~! (1:20:35 - 1:52:18)
Due to strict awesomeness quotient laws enforced by the federal government, Clarissa is obliged to tell people on the air that MAZINKAISER~! will not change their life and is not as good as GaoGaiGar. These laws do not apply in print. The truth is that it WILL change your life--entirely for the better--and that if there is anything it is not as good as, it would be Getter Robo. After all, how can one TRULY believe in GaoGaiGar's superiority without acknowledging that GaoGaiGar Final is better than the series itself?

The reason there has not yet been any sort of MAZINKAISER~! vs SHIN GETTER ROBO~! is because that would violate even Japan's awesomeness quotient laws, which are generally more lenient than ours. Make the right choice, Shinzo Abe.

Promo: Dave and Joel's Fast Karate for the Gentleman (1:52:18 - 1:53:08)
This is actually a fan-made promo and so there's nothing in it mentioning the website. Wait, they get fan-made promos?! Actually, we got a fan-made promo too from The Comics Interpreter, but it's like three minutes long and no podcast would ever actually run that. However, it was professionally done and was awesome. We received this promo and have done nothing with it since...August 2006. Hmm. Maybe THAT'S why we don't get fan-made promos...

Closing (1:53:08 - 1:55:54)
Next time, Daryl will review another Dark Horse manga title that he can't find Volume 2 of anywhere, The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. In celebration of it's 20th anniversary, Gerald's reviewing Dirty Pair: Project E.D.E.N. aka "the real Dirty Pair," and Clarissa acknowledges that MAZINKAISER~! does indeed change your life by reviewing Loveless in order to bring her testosterone levels back down.

Anime World Order Show # 30 - Our Hatred For One Another Is Exposed

We're back from Otakon and fighting off coughs and congestion, which is sure to make for fun listening these next few weeks. Clarissa reviews the manga Antique Bakery, Daryl discusses the MANLY CARTOON that is New Getter Robo, and Gerald opines on the limited edition release of Patlabor the Movie 2.

Introduction (0:00 - 31:45)
It's voicemail time! Carter says what we would have said about the Welcome to the NHK anime, Matt from Queens wants to know what the deal with Oban Star Racers is, and Angel D the Scary Yaoi Fangirl (her description, not ours) has a message that forces everyone to throw down the gauntlet. It has to do with cosplay and what we think of Knight Hunters: Weiss Kreuz.

Let's News! (31:45 - 42:09)
The bad news is that Suzuoki Hirotaka, the seiyuu for Bright Noah from Mobile Suit Gundam among other things (such as Shachi of the Hokuto Ryuu Ken from Fist of the North Star 2), and Kouji Totani, the seiyuu for Jagi from Fist of the North Star, are both dead. The good news is that there's going to be more Giant Robo anime next year. No, really. It probably won't be a continuation of the OAVs, but we take what can get around here.

Review (manga) - Antique Bakery (42:09 - 55:50)
Clarissa reviews this shojo title from DMP that is NOT GAY PORN. No, really, it's not. Well, there's gay porn doujinshi out there using the same characters that's also drawn by the original author of this. Man, how do you get away with THAT? Anyway, this is a release by DMP which is stocked next to all the gay porn at bookstores, so if you avoided it because you thought it was gay porn or could be construed as such (doubtful, considering where the growth in the manga market is), prepare to be schooled. Unfortunately, there are apparently no solar hands or Dempsey Rolls in this manga.

Promo: Dave and Joel's Fast Karate for the Gentleman (55:50 - 56:57)
We met up with Dave and Joel at Otakon this past weekend and went on grand excursions. Listen to their latest episode and hear them talk about how awesome we are. Lord knows you don't hear enough of that on this show already! Plus if you check the archives of their older shows, you'll see that they spend multiple episodes talking about...

Review: New Getter Robo (56:57 - 1:16:00)
Daryl informs the Internet about this 2004 remake of Go Nagai's seminal super robot series. New Getter Robo is a magnificent 13-episode violence epic released by Geneon that nobody bought, presumably because the only way to sell super robot shows in this day and age is to make them like Gravion or Godannar in which there's equal or greater parts cheesecake fanservice. The hell with THAT. After hearing this review, Gerald flat-out said that this is a series he does not want to see because of this review. The show may very well be good, but Daryl's review makes him NOT want to watch it. That is the kind of review this is, and the capital of Nebraska is Lincoln.

Promo: Ninja Consultant (1:16:00 - 1:17:00)
We also met up with Erin and Noah at Otakon. Noah thinks Daryl is a fascist, and alleges to be able to read his mind like it is an open book on account of him being identical to someone else he knows. Daryl thinks clowns might be present in the ATL, but perhaps the worse torture would be to have Noah spend his life with a COSPLAYER. Especially one such as Erin who made a terrifying film right on convention grounds. It's a good thing Clarissa hasn't seen this movie...YET.

Review: Mobile Police Patlabor the Movie 2, Limited Edition (1:17:00 - 1:35:13)
Gerald got to this one before Daryl could review it, so as revenge, Daryl has left this segment unedited from what Gerald sent him. That's showing him! This is one of the best anime feature films ever made and we could realistically have spent an episode talking about this. Also, the anime version of Daryl Surat is in the film. Actually, Daryl saw this film and decided he'd get those kinds of glasses since he already had the hair. He no longer has those glasses. But he will get them back someday, unless he gets LASIK or something. Seriously though, see this film...after you watch through the rest of the Patlabor anime first. Daryl forgot to mention during the recording, but...

Closing (1:35:13 - 1:38:49)
Next week, it's our Anime Festival Orlando report with our special guest, con vice president Erik Reiss! This convention is where THE TRUTH just might have died once and for all. Perhaps. You'll have to tune in to find out WHY.

Anime World Order Show # 12 - Searching for Odin, My Love!

Our guest this week is Mike Toole from Anime Jump, who's been putting the "dumb" in anime fandom since 1998! Gerald and Clarissa review the excellent series Monster, and Mike and Daryl review the Often Overlooked (and notoriously terrible) Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight. Yes, that's spelled correctly.

Introduction (0:00 - 19:26)
Our guest for the episode, Mike Toole, joins us from the start and we immediately dive right into talking about our ideal anime convention. Wait, didn't someone ask us this already? Whatever, Mike's here this time! If you want to play Mario Kart DS with him, his Friend Code is 137506166547. Wait, weren't you not supposed to give those out over the Internet or something?

Let's News! (19:26 - 29:28)
Rather abrupt transition into the news this week. The 2005 profits for 4Kids Entertainment are down 60% from 2004 because the kids who grew up on Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh now realize that their little kid brothers or whatever are into the same thing and therefore it can't possibly be cool. In other news, everything about Bleach is licensed worldwide by Viz Media. Expect people to continue fansubbing and scanning it anyway without even having the decency to say "yeah, we're doing this because we're thieves and want to watch/read this for free." At least software and movie pirates own up to what they are.

Promo: Ninja Consultant (29:28 - 31:14)
Erin from Ninja Consultant is probably our #1 fan among other podcasters, but Noah thinks Daryl is a stupid head for saying that Hols, Prince of the Sun was merely "good" instead of "the best thing ever made." This type of criticism is normally levied towards Daryl by American comicbook fans who just can't fathom the concept of someone not liking Watchmen / Sandman / Transmetropolitan / Preacher / insert decent-but-not-incredible thing written by someone from the British Isles here. The absolute worst is when those comics people say "oh, well CLEARLY you didn't understand it! Read it again!" Anyway, listen to the Ninja Consultant podcast, even though this promo is like, twice as long as most promos.

Synopsis/Review: Monster [CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST FOUR EPISODES OR SO] (31:14 - 48:34)
Clarissa and Gerald both wanted to do a segment about Naoki Urasawa's long-running manga series turned anime, but hadn't done so until now since they were still watching the show. Not that it matters, since you can't really talk about anything that happens without giving the series away. This segment is essentially a plot synopsis of the first few episodes (so that's basically the first volume of the manga), but it's not like they're ruining the series for you or even giving away much of anything. Still, we're putting the warning there. Buy this you geeks.

Promo: Corn Pone Flicks (48:34 - 49:37)
Leader Desslok has a plan to stick it to the man in this 1999 short which can be viewed on the CPF website or on Google Video. A "Cocaine Howitzer" production? Why, whatever is it that Matt Murray could have been referring to with that joke? Perhaps the next segment will shed some light on the matter!
PS: read Matt's movie reviews. He just did a really good one on V for Vendetta. Incidentally, the comicbook to that is also "just okay" and not "the greatest thing ever committed to the printed medium by the greatest author to ever live" no matter what comicbook fans say.

Often Overlooked: Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight (49:37 - 1:27:03)
When Daryl ran into Mike at Katsucon 12, it was only for a brief moment since Mike was on staff and had matters to attend to. But he insisted that he be on the show when we did our review of Odin, so we waited until this fateful day. Look people, when you start talking about "worst anime ever made," you are not qualified to speak on the subject unless you've seen Odin, okay? This is one of the single biggest disasters in anime history, and Mike and Daryl will tell you all about exactly why that is with the help of quite a few audio clips. Listen on and be forever enlightened.

Closing (1:27:03 - 1:34:25)
Sorry this episode was even later than usual, but Daryl had gotten word that his grandmother had died right before we recorded this episode, and was attending the funeral during the days he would normally spend editing the show (fortunately Gerald and Clarissa did most of the work in his absence). We close things up by playing what is easily the greatest Discipline ad copy reading we've received to date, courtesy of our friend Max, aka the "Lensman...THE DUB" guy from a few episodes back. Next week--and that's next week for you, later today for us--Gerald brings back the Creator Spotlight segment by talking about his favorite director, Katsuhito Akiyama. Clarissa will review the long-running yet Often Overlooked manga series From Eroica With Love by Yasuko Aoike, and Daryl will review a currently-running manga by Naoki Urasawa entitled Pluto.
