Anime World Order Show # 72 - Have Another Lead Enema

With Anime Weekend Atlanta mere DAYS away, we managed to get this one edited in between the time spent scrambling to get our panels all put together. Clarissa's reviewing the BL manga Dog Style, Gerald reviews the terrible wannabe cyberpunk OAV Burn Up! which unfortunately got multiple sequels, and Daryl reviews the awesome non-wannabe cyberpunk OAV Cyber City Oedo 808 which unfortunately got no sequels at all.

Full show notes with pictures and stuff to be posted later. Maybe.

Introduction (0:00 - 29:58)
After lamenting our inability to play children's videogames, we answer a voicemail about "real giant robot shows," which slightly confuses us. Hopefully we answered the question. We also read an email about our experience with seeing anime in theaters, which isn't all that much. For those curious, here's the IMDB page for the 2006 Danish animated movie "Princess." Since this was recorded, we did actually get a copy of this movie, and you have our assurances that although there are some moments in it with live-action, it's not another Rock-a-Doodle. We wrap things up with a quick overview of all the panels we'll be doing at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2008. Spread the word!

Let's News! (29:58 - 54:44)
So there was this MSNBC article about anime that has the Internet in a buzz right now, and rather than just say what everyone everywhere's already said, we decided to interview TV's Patrick Macias, who was [mis]quoted in the article, to get to the bottom of how it came about, what got misrepresented, and even what it got right. The audio quality on this segment isn't very good, we know. We blame Patrick for pounding on the table constantly. Just like we blame him for everything. Here's "The Incredibly Strange Mutant Creatures who Rule the Universe of Alienated Japanese Zombie Computer Nerds (Otaku to You)," the article we mentioned from the March/April 1993 issue of Wired (the first issue) as being where the "otaku = techno-geek" notion came about. Though as Lawrence Eng astutely notes in the comments, it is preceded by this December 1990 article entitled "I'm Alone But Not Lonely: Japanese Otaku-Kids colonize the Realm of Information and Media, A Tale of Sex and Crime from a Faraway Place."

Review: Dog Style (54:44 - 1:13:10)
Mara from the Providence Anime Conference sent us a voicemail in response to the podcast from "the 25th, which was yesterday." What that actually means is that it's a voicemail in response to the podcast from July 25th, which was not yesterday. In fact, it was the podcast from July 25th, 2007. We just forgot to play the message. For a year. PAC's actually happening in about two weeks, so we figured this was the absolute latest time to actually put this thing into the show. Mara sincerely hopes the con doesn't end up being nothing but sleaze and porn, so it's only natural that we relay that sentiment right before Clarissa reviews one of Modoru Motoni's BL manga offerings. Like Poison Cherry Drive, Dog Style was released by Media Blasters through their Kitty Media label. So far Volume 1 and Volume 2 are out, with the third volume to be released in the future. This review's a little short, so if you want more Clarissa, check out the latest episode of Destroy All Podcasts DX where they reviewed Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Granted, it should have been Daryl on this one as he's the one who's seen the movie the most times, but Jeremy really wanted a girl on the show. Does that make Jeremy the John McCain of anime podcasting? We're pretty sure the answer is yes.

Review: Burn Up! (1:13:10 - 1:36:05)
Gerald plunges into the depths of the "the world should've forgotten about this" pit to bring us this 1991 OAV that was somehow so popular in the US, we got three followups made to it. And two of those were TV series. In our entire lives, we have never seen anyone who genuinely LIKES Burn Up!, so it is a complete mystery as to how this came about. Pay special attention to the dub of this one, as it was one of the first dubs made by AD Vision, as they were known at the time. Don't worry: we've got sound bites! Due to some level balance mishaps, Clarissa's audio on this portion is much lower than everyone else's, but you should still be able to hear her if you BELIEVE IN THE FUTURE:

Promo: OSMcast (1:36:05 - 1:36:52)
Five months this podcast has been out and they have not one, not two, but THREE serviceable promos? And we've been around what, almost three years now and we still have the one crummy one? CURSE YOU, REED RICHARDS! [shakes fist] At least, we assume he's to blame as this is run by a fantastic four! True to the name, this show's about everything "awesome," and then some. I say "and then some" since they did episodes about Smash Brothers Brawl, Rock Band, and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Also, Indy IV. Still, give them a shot since their show actually comes out each week. Whatta concept!

Review: Cyber City Oedo 808 (1:36:52 - 2:18:36)
Daryl tried to shorten this review. Really, he did. But he didn't have it in him to make this one single segment shorter than your typical entire episode of Fast Karate for the Gentleman, especially not where Yoshiaki Kawajiri is concerned. But unlike all the previous Kawajiri-related AWO segments, this one's not actually a scene-by-scene description of what happens in it. In fact, it might just be Kawajiri's best work, which is why it's odd that hardly anybody ever remembers it. Not even us, until we did the review! That is a damn crime for which we should be locked up in orbital space prison for three centuries, but fortunately we're all out on parole doing podcasts in exchange for reduced time. For every minute of edited podcast we release, we get time off our sentences. Now you know why the episodes run so long!

This is Shunsuke Sengoku. That's a jitte he's holding. I don't remember if you could pick up jitte in the Neo-Geo side-scrolling beat-em-up that was also named Sengoku, where ninja and cowboys fought side by side. I played a lot of Shogun: Total War back in the day, and so I know the word "sengoku" refers to "the country at war" when all those daimyo were fighting over control of Japan. We need a sequel to that game.
This is his gun. You mean to tell me they can make TWO TV shows out of Burn Up!, but nothing for Cyber City Oedo? This is already all the premise one needs!
This is Gabimaru Rikiya, but nobody ever calls him that in the show itself. He's just "Goggles" or "Go-gl" or what have you. In addition to being a cyber hacker, he's also a former boxer. Or at least I assume that since he decides the best way to defeat evil robots is to PUNCH THEM.
Put your peen away: THAT'S A DUDE. Merrill Yanagawa aka Benten does not ride a space motorbike and have a chain wrapped around his chest, but he wields MONOFILAMENT WIRE~! which automatically makes him the best character. On second thought, take your peen back out.
For a cop, you sure don't know much; those are Cyberjunkies! Oh wait, this isn't the Streamline dub of 8 Man After. This is a fine representation of what the cyber criminals look like. Notice the Hokuto no Ken thug motif present throughout this cartoon. Further proof of its quality, I tell you.
Wait a second, is that...Donna Troy?!
Nothing better exhibits Yoshiaki Kawajiri's unmatched talent for character and fashion design than this Brigitte Nielsen lookalike, but giving the Shoryuken to the robot won out for being the embedded image in the MP3.

There is no "witty" caption I can offer to this picture of a cyborg sabertoothed tiger chargin' his laser. Either you instantly want to see this anime or you do not.

Amazon has a few copies of the DVD left in their zShops. If you're wondering why they never wore those uniforms they're sporting on the cover ever again after the first episode, it's because Kawajiri decided they looked stupid after all.

Closing (2:18:36 - 2:22:15)
The next episode of AWO hopefully shouldn't take TOO long since after AWA we're just about done as far as anime con season goes. Gerald's going to be reviewing the Witchblade anime, and despite having bought every volume of this series as FUNimation released it, he was able to mentally block out the Gonzo logo that's on all the packaging and is displayed at the start of each disc. Perhaps he was looking at something else! Daryl's reviewing the 3-part OAV Strait Jacket, soon to be released by Manga Video, and Clarissa's reviewing the highly infectious Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture, which for incomprehensible reasons has been licensed by absolutely nobody. It's all about bacteria, so see you next "decultured"!

Anime World Order Show # 69c - Doujinshi 101 with Zero-chan

Show 69 concludes with Clarissa and Zero-chan's introduction to doujinshi. But since that would be ONLY an hour, we've got yet another news segment in front of it too.

Full show notes with links to come.

Let's News! (0:00 - 56:44)
No point in reintroducing ourselves since this is the third part of what is technically one episode! Note: the Deep Discount 20% off sale of madness is underway as is Right Stuf's Geneon closeout. We've each spent so much money that we should set ourselves up as affiliates or something at this point.

Bandai Visual to be liquidated. Now let's hope that Bandai Visual's business practices don't infect Bandai Entertainment's. And speaking of companies on the rocks, Tokyopop to be Liquidated. Look forward to Tokyopop to redouble their efforts on getting Princess Ai out there in FORCE. Also, here's an update on the layoffs that happened. Super Techno Arts has halted the distribution of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Anime in the US. Which doesn't make that much of a difference since you couldn't actually find the show anyway! And on the subject of Jojo's, here's what happens when religious fundamentalists WHO DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING BUY THE SHOW start complaining about religious insensitivity. Also, Bandai Entertainment talks about increasing episode count on their DVDs. Towards the Terra will get 8 episodes a disk and Gurren Lagann will get 9 episodes a disk for the sub only release as an example. ADV also confirms that there's more ADV manga coming in the form of Yotsuba& and Cromartie. Woo! That just happens to be the two manga series that we care about too! Also, Gurren Lagann is getting on the Sci-Fi channel. Were people watching their Ani-Mondays (be careful, that link is dangerous)? Gaogaigar is getting the second half of the show released on DVD this coming August. This show sold so horribly that they dropped the dub. If you didn't pick this up before there's a box set for the first series coming out very soon too. Ed Chavez of the Mangacast podcast has put out a rather complete list of all manga that has been cancelled in the US. If you read a lot, chances are this is a rather annoying list (what happened to the rest of Exaxxion!?). Also, we tread in to dangerous territory by talking about a potentially incredible video game, Capcom vs. Tatsunoko! If you don't know what the deal is with this well listen to the podcast and check out this list to see what could potentially be in the game. Maybe now you can see why we're excited?

Doujinshi 101 (56:44 - 1:43:19)
Before we dive into the garden of madness, we play two highly appropriate voicemails. This segment might cover information that's common knowledge, but think of it as an extended introduction to doujinshi in general. Please note that Zero-chan's microphone sucks and it took a lot of work just to get the audio to where it is here. Foam windscreens and pop filters are a podcaster's key to a brighter tomorrow!

Clarissa here, with a few links where you can get information about or purchase doujinshi. Some of these were mentioned specifically in the show but perhaps not all of them.

Doujinshi information:

What is the Comic Market? - Courtesy of Zero-chan, here's a presentation from February by the Comic Market Preparation Committee that goes over a lot of info about the event.

Ketto.com - This site is Japanese only, so it may not be useful for many of you, but this site has a listing of probably every single doujin event being held. Unfortunately they don't have anything before 2000 listed, but for anything recent or upcoming you're good.

Akihabara Channel - For the English-only crowd, here's one you can read. It only covers events in the Tokyo and Osaka areas, but that's rather a lot of them.

Doujinshi Database - Gerald and I are contributers on this site and I spend way too many hours adding books, artists and events (pulled from Ketto) along with romanizing titles. Like most doujinshi stuff overseas, there's rather a lot of porn, but it's intended to be an info repository for all doujins. There's a lot of non-porn getting added currently off listings from Toranoana and such, and if you want more non-smut info available please sign up and help out. There's so many artists, writers and books we need all the contributions we can get.

Purchasing doujinshi:

JPQueen - This store sells commercial manga, anime and goods along with doujinshi and everything is in English. Their prices can be a bit high on some things but you can find some good deals too, and I've never had an issue buying from them.

Happy Otaku Site - This one's been around for a long time now. I've ordered from him a couple of times, and he seems reliable. He stocks some older books and smaller fandoms as well.

Comiket Online Shopping Service - Buy through Comiket here, but honestly their prices are rather high and for fujoshi the selection is pretty bad.

Again, there are a lot of small stores online like Manga Store Kawaii, Kitty Cafe (what used to be the Aestheticism Cybershoppe for you longer-term yaoi fans) and the shop linked with the English version of Akibablog.

If you want to buy from sites like Yahoo! Japan Auctions or Toranoana (or Toranoana Princess Side) you'll need a proxy service. There are a lot of these, many very small and mostly known of through word of mouth, so it can be difficult to find the best one. Rinkya is one of the biggest and most convenient, but their fees are quite high so you pay a lot for that. I generally use Celga; they're a bit less convenient but their fees are somewhat lower.

As I mentioned, there's also digital doujin purchases. I usually prefer to get physical books, because sometimes there are things that just don't carry over into the scans. For example, I have a couple of Black Jack doujins with textured covers so they have a particular varied feel when you hold them; there are also some books with elaborate layered covers and such. But if all you'd be reading is scans anyway, and/or you can't find the books, putting down a few bucks for one of these is a pretty good deal.

DLsite has an English version which makes things easier, but you can also purchase from the original Japanese version of DLsite, which sometimes has different items; anime blog Heisei Democracy has a guide for purchasing from the Japanese version. I had thought it was possible to purchase from Digiket but it looks like they may require a Japanese credit card or prepaid web money card.

We didn't actually record a closing segment, so it's somewhat of a mystery as to what Show 70 will be about. Expect a review of Tekkonkinkreet, and possibly--POSSIBLY--the second pillar of the Holy Manga Video Trinity of Suck. No guarantees though.

Anime World Order Show # 54d - Clarissa Isn't Dead, She Was Hibernating (like Superman)

After a month of procrastination and being occupied with actual work, we conclude the super-extended Show # 54 with Clarissa's review of Ai no Kusabi. Its DBR--Dudes Bein' Rude--rating is quite powerful indeed. This hopefully concludes the "non-standard format" episodes of the last month and change, but once again, if you've never heard the show before, you may not want to start with this one since our other episodes aren't like this.

Introduction (00:00 - 13:19)

It's somewhat difficult to select emails that are appropriate to read without all of our powers combined to answer them, but somehow Clarissa manages to select three whole messages. First of all, we deviate briefly from the mansex theme of this episode to talk about hot girls making out with each other--more specifically, why yuri manga is so hard to find and whether there's any of it that's good. Clarissa mentions a few titles, then directs everyone interested to Okazu since Erica is awesome and can school people on this better than anyone at AWO. The question of whether or not YesAsia sells bootlegs is addressed (the answer appears to be no), and Clarissa points people looking for Japanese DVDs to CD Japan, whose prices are cheaper, though they don't have free shipping and you should probably check which one ends up costing less with that factored in. We close with a listener who wants us to review Wings of Honneamise, Angel Cop and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Also, is Koichi Ohata the Japanese Rob Liefeld? Perhaps you can help us answer that.

News (13:20 - 23:25)

Clarissa, unchecked by cohosts talking about things that don't involve Dudes Being Rude, ends up talking about a lot of news that has to do with that. Sanami Matoh is doing more FAKE, and Clarissa hopes that if it gets licensed, it'll get a translation she can read without stabbing her eyes out. Also, Yuu Watase may be doing her first Boys Love manga (or maybe just another shoujo-which-happens-to-have-gay-boys-manga) as part of another magazine, which will also feature Alexander Daiou. Finally, AX happened, which means lots of licensing announcements and other news. Clarissa talks a few new licenses, the continuation of Yotsuba&!, and the keynote about the manga industry.

Review: Ai no Kusabi (23:26 - 53:27)

Future societies on human-colonized worlds, genetic engineering, highly-stratified class systems, supercomputer leaders, sex slaves and hot mansex. Plus Kaneto Shiozawa in possibly his hottest role? It must be Ai no Kusabi.

Though Clarissa generally wouldn't look to BL manga for serious science fiction literature, since well, that's not really the point, this one is actually pretty neat for the interaction between society and human emotion/desire. But the main focus is still definitely on incredibly handsome men and their torrid affair.

Clarissa forgot to note over the course of this review that this show is solely responsible for her bulletproof kink of the indirect cigarette kiss. It's only fair that others should be warned before watching. It could happen to you!

Also, for the record, this is the concept art of the bikes looked at during the episode:

Promo: Robotronic Dynamite! (53:28 - 54:58)

Since this episode is a veritable buffet of mansex, it's only fitting that we endorse the gayest podcast ever, using an appropriately-themed promo. This 'cast features Joseph Luster, who can currently be found in Otaku USA, along with the AWO.

Closing (54:59 - 59:13)

And thus ends the most ridiculous episode of this podcast ever. Which for us is pretty severely ridiculous. The next episode's already recorded, so there shouldn't be another crazy gap between this one and the next. Next up, our powers combine once again, but instead of Captain Planet we end up with Daryl's review of the Sanrio film Sea Prince and the Fire Child, Gerald's take on the classic Gainax series Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, and Clarissa's initial reactions to MPD Psycho.

Anime World Order Show # 53 - Dark-Skinned Elf Chick Paizuri = Dance All Night

This week we have a whole new set of audio problems as Clarissa sounds like a chipmunk that’s been chipmunked already (maybe we should do an entire show like this?). This week Daryl reviews the seminal Record of Lodoss War, Gerald reviews our first actual book without pictures in The Notenki Memoirs and Clarissa review the BL anthology J-Boy.

Also, just so you know what we were doing over at JACON:

Those Getbackers box sets were well earned.

Yes, blame the delays in episode releases on con panels, job interviews, finding a new condo, moving, and other things that betray the notion that we MAY have a semblance of a life. Media Blasters sent us Princess Princess, which I’m sure Clarissa will review one day...or maybe Daryl. Who knows? Also, we have worked out our issues with Right Stuf International and we’re no longer considered bootleggers to them, so please can stop sending them hate mail. Wow. We never said to boycott them, and it seems like that’s the natural step some of you took.

Introduction (0:00 – 19:58)
Our contest for the silver keychain is finally over! Yes, instead of doing something simple like T-shirts, we went straight to silver keychains. Up next, gold spinning hubcaps…maybe. Also, we completely corrupted one man’s life with--what else--KAZUO KOIKE!

Let’s News (19:59 – 51:27)
In what is probably the oldest and most irrelevant segment of news we’ve ever done (sorry folks, the next show will be marginally more up to date) we take a look at the stuff you’re all bored with talking about, like the Sakura-con Bandai Visual panel and how Bandai Visual’s pricing is insane. Also, Imaginasian TV is going to be releasing Orguss, Nobody’s Girl Remi, and Cat’s Eye in the US in an on demand DVDR format for roughly $10.00 a disk. TAKE THAT BANDAI VISUAL! We also reference this post on Patrick Macias’ blog. Clarissa seems to be unhappy with the release, but Gerald is looking forward to Orguss. Princess Prince of Tennis has been edited for the DVD release, but it's just that opening and closing music was changed. Apparently this was a mistake on the part of the DVD producer. Funimation is going to be releasing One Piece uncut, but how many people are going to bother starting the show at episode 140 something? Probably not too many, which leads to a discussion about Funimation TV, Crayon Shin-chan, and Saint Seiya. Media Blasters has a bunch of new titles, and what makes this interesting is that all of it will be sub-only. Yes, including Kashimashi (CLARISSA’S FAVORITE SHOW). The Eisner award nominations came out, and Monster was nominated along with Ode to Kirihito, Project X: Cup Noodle, and Abandon the Old in Tokyo. Say, is the Avril Lavigne comic actually good? You tell us. FINALLY, we talk about the death of a man with no regrets. Eyebrows!

Lather’s Blather Podcast (51:28 – 52:33)
Jeff Tatarek’s own podcast has BEGUN! Now you have even LESS of a reason to listen to us, as if the incredibly long delays, irrelevant news, and reviews about shows from 17 years ago weren't enough.

Review: Record of Lodoss War (52:34 – 1:40:34)
Daryl takes a look at what is probably one of the largest OAV projects in anime history. It’s the dream of every Dungeon & Dragons player come true [ELF CHICKS]. Actually, the whole story is based off of a Japanese D&D campaign from the 80s, so we're talking 1st Edition, pre-Forgotten Realms. Listen to this barely-edited review that's the length of most podcasts to find out why you should (or shouldn’t?) watch a show with a main character whose fighting style consists of running forward with his sword drawn to see if he hits something.
Elf chicks.

ELF CHICKS.
ELF CHICKS~!
Such fine and exquisite attention to detail!

Review: The Notenki Memoirs: Studio Gainax And The Men Who Created Evangelion (1:40:35 – 1:56:56)
Gerald does a book report on The Notenki Memoirs, which is probably the furthest we’ve ever gone from just anime and manga. Still, like Mechademia, at least it's a book ABOUT anime and manga! He probably shouldn’t do book reviews since he tends to forget things and mix names up. Still, the book's a good read if you’re interested in Gainax, and it's cheap too!

Promo: R5 Central (1:56:57 – 1:57:26)
Dave and Joel may not have been able to get Atomic Warrior Valiant Denim out in time for their 100th episode, but worry not, for Mike Dent does the equivalent in well, every episode of R5 Central. Something tells me this is the kind of thing that's funny to do once or twice, but once it's every episode, there's no joke. Wait, what do you mean this is supposed to be serious?

Review: J-Boy Manga Anthology (1:57:27 – 2:10:05)
Clarissa takes a look at a new one shot BL anthology based on a Japanese anthology of the same name. We say "one shot" because this seems to be a testing of the BL waters to see if this is viable. Why is her segment and Gerald's so short in comparison to Daryl's? Because they did a better job on editing.

Promo: Greatest Movie EVER! (2:10:06 – 2:10:58)
Listen. You can't do a 360 in a helicopter. You just can't. It's impossible. It simply can't be done. Except Roy Scheider says otherwise.

Closing (2:10:59 – 2:15:29)
Next time...more delays! Daryl was going to review Sirius no Densetsu aka Sea Prince and the Fire Child aka That Other Movie Sanrio Released In the 80s That Wasn't Ringing Bell, but instead he's got an advance review of 009-1 to do. Gerald's reviewing Black Lion, and if you haven't heard of that, all you need to know is that it's by Go Nagai and it contains ninjas. Really, that's the entire review right there. Finally, Clarissa reviews the infamous Ai no Kusabi. It's by Gerald's favorite director!

Or so we claim. What's probably going to happen is that we'll release a fairly lengthy JACON report first, then to stall for time, we'll release the segments that would ordinarily comprise a single show individually over the course of the next few weeks. Daryl is currently in an undisclosed bunker where the Internet connection isn't exactly reliable, and with Otaku USA deadlines, real estate closings, and other things that involve money eating up time, this is probably the only way to release at least SOME content on a fairly regular basis until June or so.

Anime World Order Show # 36 - Cagliostro, Phoenix, and Embracing Love

This episode is a week late due to computer troubles, but hopefully the wait is worth it. Gerald reviews Hayao Miyazaki's theatrical directorial debut The Castle of Cagliostro, Daryl reviews the 2004 anime remake of Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix (aka Hi no Tori), and Clarissa reviews the yaoi manga Embracing Love by Youka Nitta.

Man, we're totally slacking off on these show notes as of late. But hey, we've got a Review Index now! It's incomplete because it doesn't yet include all the instances where we waste time on "weeaboo" when someone asks us "what do you think about..." but it's a start. Did you just read "weeaboo"? 'Cause I think you just saw someone write "weeaboo." Forget about yaoi paddles, for I have seen the future and it is the past.

Introduction (0:00 - 32:03)
Carl Gustav Horn is officially smarter than us, but he was suffering from an inflamed farceurix which required immediate care. This week, we realize that if we keep asking people to send us Odeo feedback, it would do us well to actually PLAY some of them and respond to them on air. Subjects include: cons and cosplay stuff, Planetes, Chobits, Street Fighter II, and why Fist of the North Star is popular everywhere else in the world except for North America. On a highly related note, the US DVDs released by Toei are officially no longer available. This picture sums up AWA in a nutshell:

Promo: GeekNights (32:03 - 33:11)
Rym and Scott exhibited their full recovery from their pierrotlectomies by informing us that the Monty Python Spanish Inquisition-style promo of theirs was not actually meant to be seriously played by anyone, so we're playing the Blues Brothers-style one instead. And you thought it was going to be the Blues Brothers combined with the Inquisition...what a show. They'll be guests at SITACon in New York this weekend, so to help you identify them, here's a picture (Rym is on the left and Scott is on the right):

Review: Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (33:11 - 59:12)
Man. Thirty-six episodes before we officially covered anything directed by Miyazaki, "because everyone knows about him already." Gerald reviews the newly-released special edition available from Manga Video, compares it to the previous DVD release, and in so doing answers the question on the minds of everyone who's ever been hit by a double-dip DVD release: is it worth picking up the new release if you already own the original one? Sure, every other anime podcast has reviewed this movie by now, but only OURS has the foresight to point out how this movie inspired Time Crisis!

Review: Phoenix [Hi no Tori] (59:12 - 1:26:08)
Daryl didn't exactly write any notes to himself whatsoever prior to doing this segment, but he figured he'd try and schmooze his way through this one anyway. The result is that he takes nearly 30 minutes to say what could have been said in 15, and he completely forgot to fully say exactly what the Phoenix was in the story. It's essentially the Power Cosmic incarnate, or for you Excel Saga fans, the Great Will of the Macrocosm. The will of the universe incarnate, as it were. Phoenix is Osamu Tezuka's life work and perhaps his grandest achievement, having been remade multiple times over the years. The Phoenix being reviewed in this segment is the 2004 remake, but since Daryl can't ever stay on topic, he ends up talking about the other stuff too. Under the guise of "putting things in context," you see. Of course, like all of Tezuka's work, almost nobody in America cares about this even though it's really good. PS: Vertical's English-language release of Ode to Kirihito comes out on October 24th.
  • Media Blasters told us at AWA that they do actually plan on releasing the anime, so instead of linking to a torrent for the series, here's the opening so you can see how nice this show looks; Youtube/Google Video doesn't cut it
  • Viz Media's excellent release of the Phoenix manga - which nobody except Daryl seems to be buying as it comes out, provided he can actually FIND IT because much like Golgo 13, stores and anime con dealers don't tend to carry it...in addition to what's listed on the Viz page, volumes 7 and 8 of are also out, but they're practically out of stock at both Amazon and Right Stuf
  • Tezuka in English - a fantastic resource for those who wish to learn more about Tezuka's output and derivative works over the years
  • Osamu Tezuka World - Tezuka Production's official English-language webpage
  • This was going to be a link to the full English-language text of the February 10, 1989 article that ran in Asahi following Tezuka's death, but we can't find it anywhere. It's got to be out there, but in the meantime, here instead is the often-repeated quote from said article: "Foreign visitors to Japan often find it difficult to understand why Japanese people like comics so much. One explanation for the popularity of comics in Japan, however, is that Japan had Tezuka Osamu, whereas other nations did not. Without Dr. Tezuka, the postwar explosion in comics in Japan would have been inconceivable."
  • Japan Media Arts Festival poll where about 80,000 people voted and declared Phoenix the #6 manga of all time - though bear in mind, the list is almost entirely shonen action and Slam Dunk was #1
Review: Embracing Love [Haru wo Daiteita] (1:26:08 - 1:47:35)
But it's not like the Viz Signature line is the only manga imprint you can't find sold anywhere! It's been a while since the last yaoi review, but Clarissa was finally able to track down this Youka Nitta manga released by Be Beautiful. Why the Be Beautiful releases are so much more expensive than all other manga releases despite not really being of superior print quality or page count strikes us as being particularly blatant on the "we charge more because fans are willing to pay extra and that's it" front, but that's CPM for you.

Promo: Happy House of Hentai (1:47:35 - 1:47:58)
Last we checked, "Lord Kaosu" and "Hello Kitty" both live in New Mexico, but they're both guests at SITACon in New York on October 6-8. They're inviting a whole bunch of podcasters to be guests there, but we unfortunately cannot attend. Not only would it be tricky for the three of us to all get time off from school/work, we'd have to pay to fly ourselves there. Between Anime Weekend Atlanta and Right Stuf's sale on Geneon DVDs, we're about spent. So if you head to SITACon and you see these folks, be sure to say hello because they totally traveled across the country to be there:

Say, we've got Ninja Consultant T-shirts, too!

Closing (1:47:58 - 1:51:13)
This episode is like, an entire week late. What this means is that in order to catch back up, the next episode will have to come out in a few days. Fortunately for us, the next episode will consist mostly of the recording of our AWA panel on podcasting, which turned out mostly well, boring. Perhaps it would be best to throw in some extra bits while we're at it for the sake of adding excitement.

Anime World Order Show # 23 - Decadence, Depravity, and Disasters

The popular podcasts release their shows on time and foster communities out of their listeners. We are capable of neither of these things. The theme of this episode was "disasters," and that's what befell us all. Gerald was going to review Spriggan but couldn't find the words, Clarissa reviews the "gay porn only without the porn" title My Sexual Harassment (and eventually found the words), and Daryl's ongoing search for THE TRUTH leads him to the simple, startling, and plagiarized revelation that The Japanese Animation Convention is Decadent and Depraved.

Once again we're late releasing this thing AND it's 3 AM (er, 3:45 AM now that I'm done writing the basic outline for these notes). After nearly half a year now, we STILL have not gotten any faster or better at doing the editing on these things. Perhaps now is the time to start begging people to donate mixer boards and audio hardware stuff to us or something.

Introduction (0:00 - 26:39)
We start things off by responding to listener feedback. What anime should you show to your girlfriend? Why, who better to ask than a bunch of people that have never had one! Who are the lamest character designers in anime? How do we even FIND all this stuff we review? And why the heck don't we take a cue from the GOOD podcasts and set up some forums, an IRC channel, or ANYTHING that'd help build a community, anyway?!

Let's News! (26:39 - 32:50)
A bunch of anime titles supposedly have live-action versions being made of them. WHY did we bother to report on this, again? Plus, there's a place called Moe Burger now. We all demanded that Matt Alt and Patrick Macias head over to that vile place immediately to get pictures, but since this episode is so late, they actually did it already.
Was Going to Be Reviewed But Wasn't: Spriggan (32:50 - 33:35)
Gerald tried to convince us all that Spriggan absolutely sucked, but couldn't quite formulate a proper means of conveying that message. After days of trying to fix it all through re-recordings and editing, he gave up on it so that the rest of this episode could actually be released. We'd rather release nothing at all than something not up to our standards, minimal though they may be. Will Spriggan be reviewed in the future? Time will tell.

Promo: R5 Central (33:35 - 34:19)
You know what I just learned from listening to Otaku Generation this week? That that female robot filter effect Mike does in all his promos and episodes is supposed to be his sarcastic female AI cohost! You know, like how the villains in Bibleman all have that sarcastic female AI sidekick with the New Yawk/Joisey accent to gently remind the good children viewing the Trinity Broadcasting Network that people from 'round those parts are evil? All this time, I just thought he was doing it to be ridiculous, like when Wesley Willis would do it, but it's actually an homage to the Full Armor of God. Never leave home without it. Sure, there's OTHER tokusatsu shows out there with that type of character, but I KNOW this is what he was going for. Anime Central's been over for about two months now, and by the rate it takes us to get OUR con reports done, I'd say R5 Central's right on schedule.

Review: My Sexual Harassment (34:19 - 48:24)
According to our feed statistics, the least downloaded episode of all our shows is Show # 4 in which, among other things, Clarissa reviewed the yaoi title Sensitive Pornograph. Common sense would dictate that we shouldn't review any more of this stuff since nobody cares, but we'd rather just ignore that and review whatever we feel like. Thus, Clarissa EXPLAINS IT ALL, (HAW HAW HAW HAW) by reviewing the CORNIEST (HAW HAW HAW HAW) gay anime porn title of them all!

Promo: Chibi-Tokyo (48:24 - 49:00)
Sure, Daryl made fun of uh...that one guy for spending an hour talking somewhat incoherently about Fist of the North Star for over an hour while drunk, getting various minutia wrong in the process, but that's STILL more Fist of the North Star talk than you'll see on other podcasts outside of Fast Karate for the Gentleman and (I guess) R5 Central! So check these guys out. This promo is a Quinn/Martin Production. Also, Eli Nouguez will die just as he lived: alone and unloved, with tears in his eyes brought about by the sores growing within his urethra preventing him from beating off to his Waita Uziga collection without experiencing incredible pain.

THE TRUTH: The Japanese Animation Convention is Decadent and Depraved, Part 1 (49:00 - 1:02:45)
Daryl Surat has noticed how all the other anime podcasts refuse to reveal THE TRUTH about anime conventions, and that's been especially so as of late. Here's what all the OTHER podcasters and websites don't want you to know: anime conventions are a den of sin overrun by people whose interest in anime is but tangential or secondary to another, more primary interest, usually some freaky kink. The word has spread about anime cons being "safe" territory to practice one's deviancies without fear of retribution, and this is the result. In the first part of yet another SHOCKING and COMPLETELY NOT DISHONEST look at anime conventions in the light of the Katsucon and Megacon reports of shows past, Daryl once again does what those OTHER convention reporters don't have the BALLS to do, and that's flat-out lie, deceptively edit, and plagiarize for the sake of proving his pre-conceived conclusions. Just like the real news you see on TV!
Closing (1:02:45 - 1:04:36)
This episode is about the length we originally envisioned the podcast as being (as evidenced in our early episodes) by virtue of not having Gerald's segment. Perhaps we should put up that video of Daryl stabbing him to compensate. Next time, to make up for this week, Gerald will review Crusher Joe. Alas, it won't be the "I'm the leader of this team, 'CAUSE I'M THE WHINIEST!" version. Clarissa will review another "pretty boys in armor," show named Yoroiden Samurai Troopers better known to anime fans in the US as Ronin Warriors, and Daryl will discuss the Often Overlooked (except in previous episodes of this podcast) fan favorite of decades past, Prefectural Earth Defense Force. Well, provided he rewatches it first. He was supposed to do that today, but got caught up in...editing this.

Anime World Order Show # 4 - Yaoi, Giant Whales, and Planes That Freaking Explode

For Show # 4, Gerald talks about the Often Overlooked Hakugei: Legend of Moby Dick, Daryl’s Anime Then and Now compares the original Area 88 OAVs of the 1980s to its 2004 TV series remake, and Clarissa reviews the BL title Sensitive Pornograph. We apologize for the audio quality of this episode.

For this episode we've sort of gone off the deep end and have included some actual yaoi content (well, according to Clarissa it's not). [Clarissa: I said it's not gay porn, which technically it isn't.] But don't be scared away; as usual, we hope to have something for everyone, so check out each section. This episode proved to be a significant challenge as new recording methods proved to be rather detrimental to our editing process. Damn, is recording audio really supposed to be this hard?

Introduction (0:00 - 8:29)

We now have a completely new method of being contacted since we now have a voice mail account so be sure to get your thoughts to us either by our regular email address, animeworldorder@gmail.com or call our new voicemail at 206-666-4AWO. We look forward to getting your lunatic ravings and actually playing them on air. We also check out some viewer mail, one by a person who's actually watched Zambot 3, and by several people who say that Sousei no Aquarion was not exactly the show we thought it was.

Lets News! (8:29 - 18:54)

Kevin Lilliard, who runs Fan's View, is back in the hospital again following his Ohayocon heart attack mentioned in last week's show. The man who made "otaku" a really bad word, Tsutomu Miyazaki, is also in the news. This guy is so horrible me makes the GENOM corporation look friendly (hey, I'm writing the entry this time, and I'll put in as many old school references as I want [Surat: You forget GENOM was in the remake as well])! We check out the new Sony Reader that'll display manga: witness how high the resolution is, how clean the pictures look, and balk at the insanely high price Sony will probably ask for it. Genshiken season 2 has also been announced! This is a show we at Anime World Order love since we basically embody the characters (note: currently the entry for the announcement for season 2 has been taken down, so we're not sure if we've been pranked). All this and a New York Times article on anime that...actually gets it RIGHT?

Often Overlooked: Hakugei: The Legend of Moby Dick DVD Vol. 1 (18:54 - 34:15)

Gerald takes a stance and becomes one of the few reviewers out there to give Hakugei: The Legend of Moby Dick a positive review. This is a show by the great Osamu Dezaki and Akio Sugino.

Rotating Segment: Anime Then and Now -- Area 88 (34:15 - 51:19)

In this new segment, we compare and contrast a classic anime title with its more modern remake. Daryl kicks this one off by talking about the original Area 88 (released years ago by Central Park Media then never entirely released on DVD before going out of print) and its more recent remake (available in its entirety on DVD from ADV Films). As is standard, this is yet another 30-45 minute speech edited down to 15; Gerald and Clarissa are too terrified to speak up lest the terror go on for even longer than it would otherwise.

Review: Sensitive Pornograph (51:19 - 1:09:30)

You see how the description at the top of the page mentions yaoi? We figured after nearly a month, we should make good on that threat. Clarissa reviews the yaoi title (BL, whatever...it's all guys having sex with guys; if she wanted this done correctly, she'd edit this herself) [Clarissa: Don't worry, the English speaking fandom and companies can't decide what the hell they want to call it, so you could use any and be right or wrong depending entirely on who you ask. But for clarity I usually go with the Japanese, so it's ボイズラブ/Boys Love/BL.] Sensitive Pornograph while Daryl and Gerald trivialize her interests. We apologize that the audio quality on this segment isn't quite up to par. It's either because of the recording procedure or the fact that everyone edits their own segments. I'm guessing it's the recording.

Closing (1:09:30 - 1:13:53)

Somehow everyone survived the new technical hazards brought on with this episode. We do the obligatory begging for feedback, especially with regards to show length now that that's two shows where the running time was about 75 minutes instead of 60, and do a preview for next week. Gerald vows revenge against the Sensitive Pornograph segment by doing a review of the incredibly horrible hentai title Gonad the Barbarian, Daryl does a creator spotlight on the one true Jigoku Manga master Kazuo Koike, and Clarissa tells everyone what they've been missing out on by not having watched They Were Eleven. Of course, that's only if time permits following the interview with our very first guest on the show, the Hunter S. Thompson of anime journalism (for the English language), Patrick Macias! Not only is he an expert on Japanese cult cinema, Patrick is smarter than us in all conceivable aspects AND could KO us all with his pugilistic talents.
